Chapter 9: The Person Who Started Everything
The name on the document stared back at me.
Dr. Marcus Hale.
My family doctor.
My father’s doctor.
The man who treated me since I was twenty-three.
The man who attended my wedding.
The man who held my daughters after they were born.
“No.””
Ryan watched me carefully.
“You know him.””
I looked up.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“How?””
“Because Claire didn’t create this alone.””
My hands tightened around the phone.
“What are you saying?””
Ryan sighed.
“Someone wanted you and Claire to turn against each other.””
The pieces began moving.
The strange phone calls.
The missing records.
The false test.
The fear.
The secrets.
Someone had been pushing us toward destruction.
But why?
I looked at Claire.
“Did you know about Marcus?””
She looked confused.
“No.””
Ryan nodded.
“That’s why I came here.””
I stared at him.
“After everything?””
“Yes.””
“Why should I believe you?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Because I was trying to fix what I helped break.””
The honesty hurt.
“What did you help break?””
Ryan looked away.
“I was angry at you.””
I said nothing.
“You always had everything.””
I almost laughed.
“Everything?””
“You had the career. The house. The family.””
“You think I didn’t work for that?””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“That was the problem.””
I stared at him.
“You hated me.””
“Sometimes.””
The honesty was brutal.
“But I never wanted this.””
He looked upstairs.
“Not this.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Claire.
Crying.
I looked at her.
“I need the whole truth.””
She wiped her face.
“I was lonely.””
“That doesn’t explain everything.””
“No.””
She nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
For the first time, she stopped defending herself.
“I let Ryan get close.””
Ryan looked down.
“I shouldn’t have.””
“No.””
Claire looked at him.
“You shouldn’t have.””
Then she looked at me.
“But the cameras, the recordings, Maya…”
Her voice broke.
“I was terrified.””
“Of what?””
She swallowed.
“Of losing my daughters.””
I looked at her.
“You hurt the person taking care of them.””
“I know.””
The answer was immediate.
No excuse.
No argument.
Just regret.
Then Ryan said:
“Marcus manipulated all of us.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“He knew about your joke.””
My face changed.
“What?””
“He knew Claire was hurt.””
Ryan continued.
“He told her you didn’t love her anymore.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“He told me Daniel would leave.””
My stomach turned.
“And you believed him?””
“I was weak.””
The words were barely audible.
“I was scared.””
Ryan looked at me.
“And he told me you were going to cut me out of your life.””
I stared.
“He played both sides.””
Ryan nodded.
“He knew exactly where to push.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Marcus.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*You finally figured it out.*
My blood ran cold.
Another message appeared.
*But you’re still missing the most important part.*
I looked at Ryan.
Then Claire.
Then Maya.
The next message came.
*Ask your wife why the girls were never supposed to survive the first week.*
The room stopped.
Claire gasped.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She grabbed the phone from my hand.
Her face went pale.
“I don’t know.””
Another message.
A photo.
A hospital document.
I opened it.
My hands shook.
It was dated eight weeks ago.
The day my daughters were born.
The note said:
*Emergency neonatal concern.*
And underneath:
*Parent requested no further intervention.*
I looked at Claire.
“Who requested this?””
She stared at the paper.
“I didn’t.””
Maya whispered:
“Mrs. Carter…”
Claire shook her head.
“I swear.””
Then the hospital name caught my eye.
The signature.
The handwriting.
The person who signed it.

My entire body went cold.
Because it was someone who had been standing beside us the entire time.
