Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Smile

Claire appeared in the doorway wearing a silk robe.

For one impossible second, I almost felt relief.

Because she looked normal.

That was the worst part.

She didn’t look like someone who had tied a woman to a bed frame.

She looked like my wife.

The woman I had loved for six years.

The woman who cried when we saw our daughters’ first ultrasound.

The woman who held my hand during thirty hours of labor.

The woman I thought I knew.

Her eyes moved from me to Maya.

Then to the rope lying on the floor.

She stopped.

“Daniel.””

Her voice was soft.

Too soft.

“What are you doing home?””

I stared at her.

“I could ask you the same thing.””

Her expression changed slightly.

Not fear.

Calculation.

“I don’t understand.””

“Maya was tied up.””

Claire looked at Maya like she was seeing her for the first time.

Then she sighed.

A small, disappointed sigh.

“Daniel, you need to calm down.””

Those words.

That was what bothered me.

Not shock.

Not panic.

Not “Oh my God, what happened?””

Just calm.

“Maya said you did it.””

Claire blinked.

Then she laughed.

A quiet laugh.

“You believe that?””

I looked at her.

“I walked into the nursery and found her tied up.””

“She staged it.””

The answer came too quickly.

Maya stepped forward.

“Mrs. Carter—”

“Don’t.””

Claire’s voice sharpened.

The room went silent.

I had never heard her speak to Maya like that.

Not once.

“Maya has been under a lot of stress,” Claire said.

“She’s unstable.””

Maya looked hurt.

“Your son is in the hospital.””

Claire’s face remained blank.

“And?””

The word landed like a slap.

I looked at Claire.

“What did you just say?””

She crossed her arms.

“I said she has responsibilities here too.””

“Maya’s son is sick.””

“And our daughters are here.””

The way she said it made something inside me shift.

I looked at the twins.

Still asleep.

Still unaware.

“Claire,” I said carefully, “what happened tonight?””

She walked into the room.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like she owned every inch of it.

“She tried to leave.””

“Why?””

“Because she’s irresponsible.””

Maya shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Claire ignored her.

“She has been acting strange for weeks.””

“Doing what?””

Claire looked at me.

“Taking pictures of the girls.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She’s been documenting everything.””

Maya’s face went pale.

“Because you asked me to.””

I turned.

“Claire?””

My wife didn’t answer.

Maya continued.

“You told me to keep records because you were worried about their feeding and sleep.””

Claire smiled faintly.

“And now she’s twisting it.””

I stared between them.

Two women.

Two completely different stories.

But only one of them had been tied up.

I walked closer to Maya.

“Why didn’t you call me?””

Her eyes dropped.

“I tried.””

“What?””

She reached for her phone.

The screen was cracked.

Dead.

“Mrs. Carter took it.””

Claire’s face remained calm.

“You’re making this dramatic.””

I looked at my wife.

“Did you take her phone?””

A pause.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she was threatening to leave.””

“That’s not a reason to take someone’s phone.””

Claire’s jaw tightened.

For the first time, I saw anger.

Real anger.

“She is not innocent, Daniel.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at the babies.

Then back at me.

“She has been hiding something.””

My heartbeat changed.

“What?””

Claire stepped closer.

“She’s been telling people things about our family.””

“What things?””

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

A strange expression crossed her face.

Like she had almost revealed too much.

“I need to show you something.””

She walked toward the hallway.

“Where?””

“My office.””

I didn’t move.

“Why not here?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because what I found proves Maya has been lying to us.””

Behind me, Maya whispered:

“Don’t go with her.””

Claire turned.

And smiled.

Not at Maya.

At me.

“See?””

Her voice softened.

“This is exactly what I mean.””

I looked at the woman I married.

The woman who had just accused someone without showing proof.

The woman who had a completely different reaction to finding a tied-up employee than any person I knew.

Then Claire said:

“Daniel, you need to decide who you trust.””

May you like

And on her desk, waiting for me, was something she had been hiding.

A folder with my name on it.
