Chapter 7: The Lie Before The Birth
For the first time in my life, I didn’t recognize my own home.
Every room held a question.
Every memory had become evidence.
The nursery.
The kitchen.
The hallway where Claire and I used to dance while making dinner.
The couch where we announced we were having twins.
I had built this house thinking it was a place where nothing could hurt us.
I was wrong.
Maya stood by the window.
She looked like someone who had been waiting years for a storm to arrive.
“What happened before they were born?””
She didn’t answer.
“Maya.””
Her hands tightened.
“I didn’t want to tell you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked at her.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””
She looked down.
“Because we were scared of what you would do.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Maya sat down.
“Before Emma and Lily were born, there was an incident.””
“With who?””
She looked at me.
“With Claire.””
I waited.
She swallowed.
“Mrs. Carter was having a difficult pregnancy.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“You know the medical version.””
The room went quiet.
“She was afraid.””
I frowned.
“Afraid of what?””
Maya hesitated.
“You.””
The word landed softly.
But it hurt.
I stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
“Explain.””
Maya looked at the floor.
“Three weeks before delivery, Claire had a panic attack.””
“I was there.””
“No.””
Maya looked at me.
“You were at work.””
I froze.
I remembered.
That week.
The company merger.
The late nights.
The calls.
I had barely been home.
“She called you.””
“Yes.””
“She told you she was fine.””
I didn’t answer.
Because she had.
She always did.
Maya continued.
“She told you everything was okay because she didn’t want to distract you.””
I felt defensive.
“She knew I had responsibilities.””
“And she needed you.””
The silence afterward was painful.
Maya looked away.
“One night, she told me she was afraid you would leave after the babies came.””
“That makes no sense.””
“Why?””
“Because I loved her.””
Maya nodded.
“I know.””
Then she said:
“But love doesn’t always feel like love to someone who feels abandoned.””
I didn’t like hearing it.
But I couldn’t deny it.
“What does Ryan have to do with this?””
Maya took a breath.
“After the twins were born, Mrs. Carter changed.””
“How?””
“She became convinced everyone was trying to take the babies away.””
“That’s postpartum anxiety.””
“Maybe.””
Maya looked at me.
“But then Ryan started coming over.””
I felt sick again.
“How often?””
“Almost every day.””
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Maya looked at me.
“Because you were happy.””
The answer was simple.
And brutal.
“You were finally home after months of fighting for your company. You were finally excited about being a father.””
She paused.
“And Claire was falling apart.””
I sat down.
My hands felt numb.
The doorbell rang.
Nobody moved.
Then it rang again.
Maya looked afraid.
“Who is that?””
I walked toward the door.
Claire stood behind me.
“Don’t.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Don’t open it.””
That was the first time she sounded afraid.
Not angry.
Not controlled.
Afraid.
I opened the door.
Ryan stood outside.
He looked exhausted.
Older than I remembered.
“Daniel.””
I grabbed his shirt.
“What did you do?””
His face tightened.
“I know what it looks like.””
“You were with my wife.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Yes?””
Ryan swallowed.
“But you don’t understand.””
I pushed him away.
“You came into my house.””
“I was trying to help.””
“Help?””
Ryan looked past me.
At Claire.
Then Maya.
“This is exactly why.””
“What?””
“You never ask what happened.””
I laughed.
“You’re standing in my house after betraying me.””
“No.””
Ryan shook his head.
“I’m standing in your house because Claire was about to destroy all of us.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Ryan looked at her.
“Tell him.””
She said nothing.
“Tell him what you found.””
My eyes moved between them.
“What did she find?””
Ryan looked at me.
“Your old medical records.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The ones from before the twins were born.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What records?””
Ryan whispered:
May you like
“The ones showing you knew there was a chance those babies weren’t yours.””
The room went silent.
