Chapter 7: My Husband Made One Last Mistake
"Don't open the door for him, Julian.""
My cousin was silent for a moment.
Then he asked, "Claire, what exactly is going on?""
I looked at the forged signature on the table.
"Ethan has been trying to access your inheritance. He's also been using your biological mother's identity to move money through a company he controls.""
"Why would your husband do that?""
"Because he thought nobody would ever discover the connection.""
Julian exhaled sharply.
"He's been calling me for two weeks. At first, he said he had information about my birth parents. Then he offered to help me recover an inheritance.""
"Did you sign anything?""
"No.""
"Did you give him access to your bank accounts?""
"Absolutely not.""
I closed my eyes in relief.
"Good. Don't meet him alone. I'm coming over.""
"Claire, there's something else.""
"What?""
"He said my biological mother left me a letter. He claims he has the original.""
I looked at Samuel.
The old attorney's expression changed.
"That's impossible," he whispered.
I covered the phone.
"What?""
Samuel leaned closer.
"Olivia's original letter was placed in a sealed archive. Ethan should never have had access to it.""
I returned to the call.
"Julian, don't accept anything from him. I'll explain everything when I get there.""
After ending the call, I turned toward Margaret.
"Can you arrange security?""
"Already done.""
"Have the forensic team preserve the attempted withdrawal records. I want the original submission, the IP address, the authorization trail, and every communication connected to it.""
Margaret nodded.
"Anything else?""
"Contact Julian's bank. Tell them there's a suspected fraudulent withdrawal. Nothing moves until his identity and authorization are independently verified.""
Richard stood beside the window.
He had barely spoken since discovering Julian's identity.
"My wife wanted him protected," he said quietly.
"And Ethan tried to steal from him.""
I looked at Richard.
"He didn't know the entire truth.""
"That doesn't excuse anything.""
"No. It doesn't.""
Richard turned.
"I need to speak to my son.""
"Not yet.""
"Claire—"
"Richard, Ethan knows Julian is the key to the inheritance. If he realizes we've discovered the forged document, he'll destroy whatever evidence he can reach.""
Richard clenched his jaw.
"Then what do you suggest?""
I looked toward Margaret.
"We let him believe he's still in control.""
At 6:40 that evening, I arrived at Julian's house.
He lived in a quiet neighborhood outside Boston, in a modest two-story home with a white picket fence and a small garden.
He opened the door before I could knock.
"Claire.""
He pulled me into a hug.
He was thirty years old, tall, and had the same dark eyes as Olivia in the photograph.
For the first time, I could see the family resemblance.
"Are you okay?"" he asked.
"I'm fine.""
He glanced at my belly.
"You should be resting.""
"I've had a rather unusual day.""
He gave a nervous laugh.
"That's one way to put it.""
Inside, his wife, Emily, was waiting in the living room.
She brought us tea.
Julian sat opposite me, holding a thick envelope.
"This arrived yesterday.""
He handed it over.
I recognized Ethan's handwriting.
The envelope contained a letter.
Dear Julian,
I know this may come as a shock, but I have discovered that we share a family connection. Your biological mother was my father's wife, Olivia Caldwell.
There are financial matters that may belong to you. I believe you deserve to know the truth.
I would like to meet privately and explain everything.
Your brother, Ethan.
I put the letter down.
"Did he call himself your brother?""
Julian nodded.
"Several times.""
Emily frowned.
"Why didn't you tell us he was your husband?""
"I didn't know what he was planning.""
Julian leaned forward.
"Claire, I need to know something. Is my mother really dead?""
"Yes.""
He looked down.
"Did she ever know about me?""
I thought about the photograph.
The handwritten letters.
The protection fund.
"Yes. She knew. She wanted you to have a safe childhood.""
His eyes became wet.
"Did she ever try to find me?""
"She made sure you were protected financially. I don't know whether she ever saw you.""
Julian stared at the letter.
"All these years, I thought my parents were my biological parents.""
"They loved you. That doesn't change.""
He nodded slowly.
Emily took his hand.
Then Julian looked at me.
"What does Ethan want?""
I hesitated.
"Your inheritance.""
He laughed without humor.
"Of course.""
I explained the attempted withdrawal.
The forged signature.
The missing money.
By the time I finished, Emily was visibly shaking.
"Are you saying your husband stole millions from Julian?""
"The documents suggest he tried to.""
Julian stood and walked to the window.
"Unbelievable.""
His phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
Then he turned toward me.
"It's Ethan.""
I held out my hand.
"Don't answer yet.""
He showed me the message.
I'm outside. We need to talk. I have proof about your mother.
I looked through the window.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
Ethan stood beside it, holding a brown leather folder.
He was alone.
Margaret's security team had already positioned themselves nearby.
I nodded toward Julian.
"Let him come in.""
Julian looked uncertain.
"Are you sure?""
"Yes. But don't sign anything.""
Emily moved toward the hallway.
"I'll stay nearby.""
A moment later, Julian opened the door.
Ethan walked inside.
His eyes immediately found me.
For a second, he looked surprised.
Then he smiled.
"Claire. What a coincidence.""
I remained seated.
"Is it?""
He looked at my belly.
"How are you feeling?""
"Better than you look.""
His smile disappeared.
Julian stepped forward.
"You said you had information about my mother.""
Ethan opened the folder.
"I do.""
He placed several documents on the coffee table.
"Your biological mother was Olivia Caldwell. She was my father's wife before he married my mother.""
Richard had told us the truth about Olivia, but Ethan was now deliberately mixing facts to confuse Julian.
"There's also an inheritance," Ethan continued.
"A substantial one.""
Julian looked at the papers.
"How much?""
"Approximately twelve million dollars, including accumulated investments.""
"Then why haven't I received it?""
Ethan sighed.
"Because there are complicated legal issues. The trust was mishandled.""
I almost laughed.
He was still using the same story.
Julian looked at him.
"Did you try to withdraw $4.6 million from my account?""
Ethan's expression stiffened.
"That's a misunderstanding.""
"Did you?""
"I was acting on your behalf.""
"I never authorized you.""
Ethan leaned forward.
"Listen. There are things you don't understand about this family. My father has been hiding the truth for years.""
Julian shook his head.
"Then why don't we ask him?""
Ethan's face changed.
I took out my phone.
"He's listening.""
Ethan froze.
Richard's voice came through the speaker.
"Hello, son.""
Ethan slowly straightened.
"Dad?""
"Yes.""
Richard continued.
"I've heard enough.""
Ethan looked toward the phone.
"Why are you there?""
"Because I want to know why you tried to steal from your own brother.""
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"He's not my brother.""
Julian looked stunned.
Richard answered immediately.
"He is. And I will not allow you to use him.""
Ethan laughed.
"You're suddenly concerned about family?""
Richard's voice broke.
"I've always been concerned about family. I was simply blind to what you were becoming.""
Ethan grabbed the folder.
"Forget it. You people can sort this out yourselves.""
He turned toward the door.
But before he reached it, two security officers entered.
"Mr. Caldwell, please remain here.""
Ethan spun around.
"What is this?""
One officer spoke calmly.
"We need to preserve the documents in your possession while the suspected fraud is investigated.""
Ethan looked at me.
"You arranged this?""
"No. You arranged it when you forged Julian's signature.""
He laughed.
"You can't prove that.""
I held up my phone.
"Actually, the bank's forensic team has already traced the submission.""
His smile disappeared.
Then Margaret called.
I answered.
"Yes?""
"Claire, we have something.""
"What?""
"The document submitted for Julian's withdrawal was created on a company computer. We traced it to Ethan's executive office.""
Ethan heard her voice.
His eyes narrowed.
Margaret continued.
"But there's another problem. The authorization contains a second signature. Someone countersigned it.""
"Who?""
She paused.
"Vanessa Reed.""
Ethan's head snapped toward me.
"That's a lie.""
Margaret continued.
"However, Vanessa claims she was instructed to sign the document by another individual. She's agreed to cooperate.""
I looked at Ethan.
"Who?""
Margaret lowered her voice.
"She says the instructions came from Richard Caldwell.""
I stared at the phone.
Richard?
Ethan suddenly laughed.
It was a terrible, desperate sound.
"You see, Claire? You don't know anything.""
I turned toward the speaker.
"Richard?""
There was silence.
Then Richard said:
"Claire, I need to tell you something.""
His voice sounded different.
Afraid.
"Your husband didn't create the forged document alone.""
I looked at Ethan.
He was smiling now.
Richard continued.
"Someone else in this family gave him access to the original trust records.""
"Who?""
Another pause.
Then Richard whispered:
"My wife.""
I froze.
"Your wife is dead, Richard.""
"I know.""
He took a breath.
"But she didn't act alone.""
And then he revealed the name of the person who had been helping Ethan.
It was someone I had trusted since childhood.
Someone who had attended my wedding.
May you like
Someone who had held my baby shower invitation.
*My cousin Julian's adoptive father.*
