Chapter 2: The Call That Stopped the Celebration
Ethan didn't notice anything unusual at first.
He was too busy enjoying himself.
Within minutes of my leaving the stage, Vanessa had taken my place beside him. She adjusted his bow tie, kissed his cheek, and accepted congratulations as if she had personally built the company.
I watched from a table near the ballroom entrance.
My daughter moved beneath my ribs.
"Easy, sweetheart," I whispered, rubbing my belly.
"Mommy has this.""
The waiter returned with a fresh glass of water.
"Would you like me to get your husband?""
I looked at him.
"He's occupied.""
The waiter glanced toward Ethan and Vanessa.
His expression tightened.
"Some people don't know what they have.""
I smiled faintly.
"That's becoming very obvious.""
Across the room, Ethan raised his glass.
"To the future of Caldwell Technologies!""
The audience applauded.
Vanessa leaned against his shoulder.
Then she noticed me watching.
She whispered something into his ear.
Ethan turned.
He pointed toward my table.
A security supervisor immediately approached.
"Mrs. Caldwell?""
"Yes?""
"Mr. Caldwell would like you to leave the ballroom.""
I looked at him.
"Did he say why?""
The supervisor shifted uncomfortably.
"He says you're disturbing the celebration.""
I glanced around.
I was sitting quietly, drinking water.
"Am I?""
He looked embarrassed.
"I'm just following instructions.""
I understood.
Ethan had always been good at making other people carry out his cruelty.
"That's fine," I said.
I stood slowly.
The supervisor moved to help me, but I raised a hand.
"I can manage.""
Before I could take another step, a familiar voice called out.
"Claire?""
I turned.
A silver-haired man in a navy suit was approaching.
It was Richard Caldwell.
Ethan's father.
He had founded Caldwell Technologies twenty-eight years earlier and had spent the last three years watching his son struggle to keep it alive.
Richard had always treated me kindly.
He was also one of the few people who had never spoken to me as though I were an accessory to his son's career.
"Richard," I said.
He glanced at the security supervisor.
"Why is this woman being escorted out?""
The supervisor straightened.
"Mr. Caldwell requested—"
"I don't care what my son requested.""
Richard looked at me.
"Are you all right?""
"I'm fine.""
His eyes moved to my belly.
"Has that idiot been bothering you again?""
I almost laughed.
"Something like that.""
Richard's expression darkened.
"Where is he?""
"Onstage.""
Richard looked toward the front of the room.
Then he lowered his voice.
"Claire, I need to ask you something.""
"Of course.""
"Did you receive the board's message?""
I paused.
"What message?""
He studied my face.
"About the emergency review.""
I understood immediately.
Margaret had moved quickly.
Richard took out his phone and showed me an email.
*CONFIDENTIAL — BOARD OF DIRECTORS*
*Subject: Immediate Suspension of Executive Promotion Authorization*
The message stated that all pending executive appointments had been suspended pending an extraordinary governance review.
It had been distributed to the board members, legal department, and senior executives.
At the bottom was one line.
*Issued under the authority of the Chairwoman, Sterling Meridian Holdings.*
Richard looked at me.
"Do you know what's happening?""
I glanced toward the stage.
Ethan was still smiling.
"Something important.""
Richard studied me for another second.
Then he lowered his voice further.
"Claire, I've been trying to contact Sterling Meridian for months. Their office refuses to discuss the chairwoman's identity. But I know she saved this company.""
I said nothing.
He continued.
"I've always wondered who she was.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because I'd like to thank her. And because I owe her an explanation.""
Before I could respond, someone shouted from the stage.
"Excuse me!""
Ethan was tapping the microphone.
"Could we have everyone's attention?""
Richard sighed.
"Here we go.""
Ethan looked toward the back.
"Apparently, we have a little administrative confusion.""
A few executives laughed.
"Some people in the company are getting nervous because they don't understand how leadership works.""
He smiled at the audience.
"Let me assure you. This promotion has been approved. My appointment is official.""
Vanessa clapped.
Ethan lifted his glass.
"Tomorrow, I'll be announcing some changes. Caldwell Technologies needs modern leadership. We need people who understand the future.""
His eyes briefly moved toward me.
"And we need to stop allowing personal distractions to interfere with business.""
Richard muttered, "Unbelievable.""
I placed a hand on his arm.
"Don't.""
He looked at me.
"Claire, he's gone too far.""
"Let him finish.""
Ethan continued.
"One of the first things I intend to do is restructure the executive office. Some outdated positions will be eliminated.""
Vanessa smiled.
Then he said, "And I want to thank Vanessa Reed. She has been instrumental in helping me prepare for this next chapter.""
The applause began again.
Vanessa stepped forward.
Ethan kissed her forehead.
"She's the kind of woman who belongs beside a leader.""
I almost admired his confidence.
He was standing in front of three hundred people, praising the woman who had helped him steal from the very company he claimed to love.
And he had no idea the audit team had already found the money.
"Claire?""
Richard's voice pulled me back.
"Yes?""
"I think you should know something.""
He glanced around before continuing.
"Two months ago, Ethan asked me to sign a document authorizing a transfer of several company assets to a new subsidiary.""
"Which subsidiary?""
"Calder Executive Ventures.""
My fingers tightened around my phone.
Calder Executive Ventures was a shell company discovered during the audit.
Its registered address was a small office building in Delaware.
Its listed director was Vanessa Reed.
"Did you sign it?""
"No. I asked questions. Ethan became furious.""
Richard looked toward his son.
"He told me I was too old to understand modern business.""
I breathed slowly.
"Did he explain what the subsidiary was supposed to do?""
"He said it would manage regional consulting contracts.""
"Did you approve any transfers?""
"No.""
I looked at him.
"Thank you.""
Richard frowned.
"Why?""
I was about to answer when my phone vibrated.
A message from Margaret.
*The board has received the preliminary audit report. We found unauthorized transfers totaling $3.8 million. Evidence includes invoices approved by Ethan Caldwell and payments routed through Calder Executive Ventures.*
I read it twice.
Three-point-eight million dollars.
I knew about the questionable invoices.
But the amount was larger than the first estimate.
Another message appeared.
*We also found an attempted transfer scheduled for 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. $1.2 million. Authorization pending your approval.*
I looked toward Ethan.
He was now speaking privately with Vanessa near the champagne table.
She handed him a small envelope.
He placed it inside his jacket.
I recognized the envelope.
It was the same style used by the company's legal department.
My stomach tightened.
"What is it?"" Richard asked.
I locked my phone.
"Your son has been moving money.""
Richard's face went pale.
"What?""
"Three-point-eight million dollars. Possibly more.""
He stared at me.
"Claire, are you certain?""
"I don't make accusations without evidence.""
Richard looked toward Ethan.
For a moment, he appeared older than I had ever seen him.
"That boy...""
He stopped.
I knew what he wanted to say.
He had spent twenty-eight years building a company and another three years watching his son inherit the opportunity to lead it.
He hadn't imagined this ending.
"Richard," I said quietly, "I need you to do something for me.""
"Anything.""
"Don't confront him yet.""
"Why?""
"Because I want to know how far he planned to go.""
Richard swallowed.
Then he nodded.
Across the room, Ethan was approaching us.
His smile was gone.
"Dad. What are you doing over here?""
Richard folded his arms.
"Talking to Claire.""
Ethan glanced at me.
"I thought security was escorting you out.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"She's pregnant with your child.""
"And?""
The single word made Richard stare at him.
Ethan shrugged.
"She's perfectly capable of leaving by herself.""
I looked at my husband.
"Have you finished your speech?""
He frowned.
"What's that supposed to mean?""
"Nothing.""
"Then stop acting mysterious.""
Vanessa appeared beside him.
"Ethan, the board members are asking for you.""
"Tell them I'll be there.""
She hesitated.
"Actually, Mr. Whitmore wants to speak with you immediately.""
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"Which Mr. Whitmore?""
"David Whitmore. The chairman of the compensation committee.""
Ethan looked at me again.
Then at Richard.
"What did you two tell him?""
"Nothing," I said.
He laughed.
"You're incapable of influencing anyone in this room.""
I reached for my water.
"Then you have nothing to worry about.""
He leaned closer.
"Listen carefully. Tomorrow, my lawyers will send you the divorce papers. You'll get enough money to live comfortably, but I don't want you interfering with my life.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Are you out of your mind?""
Ethan turned.
"This is between my wife and me.""
"Then perhaps you should remember she's carrying your child.""
Ethan's face twisted.
"I didn't ask for this situation.""
The room seemed to grow colder.
I looked down at my belly.
Then back at him.
"Neither did I.""
His phone rang.
He checked the screen.
The name displayed was David Whitmore.
He answered immediately.
"David! I was just about to—"
His smile disappeared.
He listened.
Then his eyes widened.
"What do you mean, suspended?""
Vanessa stopped moving.
Ethan turned away from us.
"That's impossible. I was approved. The ceremony is happening right now.""
A pause.
"No, I don't understand. Who authorized this?""
He listened again.
His face slowly drained of color.
Then he looked directly at me.
For the first time that evening, I saw something unfamiliar in his eyes.
Fear.
He ended the call.
"What did you do?"" he demanded.
I lifted my glass.
"Enjoying the party.""
He grabbed my arm.
"Claire!""
Richard shoved his hand away.
"Don't touch her.""
Ethan barely looked at his father.
He was staring at me.
"Tell me what you did.""
I leaned closer and whispered:
"I told you to enjoy your promotion while it lasted.""
Then a voice came from the ballroom entrance.
"Good evening, everyone. May I have your attention?""
The entire room turned.
Margaret Lewis, the chief operating officer of Sterling Meridian Holdings, had just entered with two attorneys and a thick black folder.
May you like
And she wasn't looking at Ethan.
She was looking directly at me.
