Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Marriage Records
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The ballroom remained frozen beneath its golden chandeliers. The orchestra had stopped playing. Waiters stood beside abandoned champagne trays, and three hundred guests watched as Margaret Lewis held the confidential report against her chest.
I looked at her.
"Who is the second beneficiary?""
Margaret glanced toward Richard Caldwell.
"Madam Chairwoman, I believe Mr. Caldwell should answer that question.""
Richard's face had lost its color.
Ethan immediately stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous. Whatever you're suggesting, it has nothing to do with my father.""
Richard didn't look at him.
"Tell her, Ethan.""
My husband swallowed.
"There's nothing to tell.""
Richard finally turned.
"Then why did you use your mother's maiden name on the account?""
A murmur spread through the room.
I looked at Ethan.
"What account?""
Richard took a slow breath.
"Three months ago, I received a notice from the bank concerning a dormant family trust. Someone had attempted to change its beneficiary information.""
Ethan shook his head.
"Dad, stop.""
Richard ignored him.
"The trust belonged to my late wife, Margaret Caldwell. It was established before Ethan was born.""
I frowned.
"Why would Ethan's name appear on a trust connected to his mother?""
Richard's eyes met mine.
"Because he wasn't the only person named in her original will.""
Ethan's expression changed.
Richard continued.
"My wife had a daughter before she married me. Her name was Olivia.""
The name meant nothing to me.
"Where is she?""
"She died twenty-seven years ago.""
Richard's voice became quieter.
"At least, that's what I was told.""
Ethan suddenly raised his voice.
"That's enough!""
The entire ballroom turned toward him.
He looked around, realizing how loudly he had spoken.
"These are family matters. They have nothing to do with the company.""
Margaret opened the report.
"Unfortunately, they do. One of the accounts receiving funds from Calder Executive Ventures was registered under Olivia Caldwell's name.""
Richard grabbed the edge of the table.
"That's impossible.""
"Apparently, the account is active," Margaret replied.
Richard looked as if someone had struck him.
I moved closer.
"Richard, did you know about this?""
He shook his head.
"No. I swear to you.""
Ethan laughed nervously.
"You're all making this sound like some criminal conspiracy. Olivia was dead before I was born. Why would I use her name?""
I studied his face.
"That's what we're trying to find out.""
Vanessa had been standing near the stage, visibly shaken.
Now she spoke.
"Ethan told me Olivia was his aunt.""
Richard turned sharply.
"What?""
Vanessa looked between us.
"He said there was an old family inheritance. He said the account belonged to a relative who lived overseas.""
Ethan stared at her.
"Vanessa, shut your mouth.""
She flinched.
I stepped toward her.
"How long have you known about this account?""
"I don't know everything.""
"Try.""
Vanessa's hands trembled.
"He asked me to prepare some documents. He said they were for a dormant trust. I only handled the paperwork.""
Margaret asked, "Did you communicate with anyone claiming to represent Olivia Caldwell?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she nodded.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
"A woman named Helen.""
Richard's expression changed.
"Helen?""
"She called the office twice. She said she was Olivia's daughter.""
The silence that followed was almost unbearable.
Richard gripped the back of a chair.
"My wife's daughter had a daughter?""
Vanessa nodded.
"That's what she said.""
Ethan stepped between them.
"This is getting out of hand.""
Richard looked at his son.
"Did you know?""
Ethan didn't answer.
Richard's voice rose.
"Did you know that Olivia might have had a child?""
"Dad, I said I don't know!""
"Then why did you authorize payments to her account?""
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"Because I was protecting the family.""
Richard stared at him.
"From what?""
Ethan looked away.
I knew that expression.
It was the one he wore whenever he was preparing to lie.
I took Margaret's report.
"Where is Helen now?""
"According to the contact records, she is in Boston," Margaret replied.
"She has been communicating with a lawyer representing Calder Executive Ventures.""
"Get me the lawyer's name.""
Margaret handed me another page.
I read it.
Then I looked at Ethan.
The attorney was Daniel Price.
Ethan's personal divorce lawyer.
The same man who had drafted the agreement I found on his laptop.
"Interesting," I whispered.
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
"Claire, listen. I can explain all of this.""
"You've had three years to explain why you were hiding things from me.""
"You're misunderstanding.""
"Then explain the money.""
He looked toward the guests.
"Not here.""
I shook my head.
"You didn't have that concern when you insulted me in front of everyone.""
His face tightened.
"You're enjoying this.""
"No, Ethan. I'm trying to understand how much of my daughter's future you were willing to gamble away.""
He glanced at my belly.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely uncomfortable.
Richard stepped closer.
"Son, what did you do?""
Ethan looked at him.
Then, very quietly, he said, "I did what I had to do.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"God help us.""
Before anyone could ask another question, the ballroom doors opened.
A woman entered.
She was in her late forties, wearing a cream-colored coat over a simple black dress. Her dark hair was tied behind her head, and she carried a brown leather handbag.
She looked tired.
But her eyes were sharp.
Margaret immediately recognized her.
"Helen?""
The woman nodded.
"Yes.""
Richard took one step forward.
"Are you Olivia's daughter?""
Helen looked at him for several seconds.
Then she answered.
"Yes. My mother was Olivia Caldwell.""
Richard's lips parted.
"She was my wife's daughter.""
Helen gave a small, painful smile.
"She was your stepdaughter.""
Richard looked devastated.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
"Because my mother begged them not to.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Why are you here?""
Helen turned toward him.
"Because you stopped paying me.""
The words landed like a slap.
I looked at her.
"Paying you for what?""
Helen opened her handbag.
She removed a thick envelope.
"Keeping quiet.""
Ethan lunged toward her.
"Don't.""
Richard caught his arm.
"Let her speak.""
Helen placed the envelope on the table.
Inside were bank statements, emails, and several signed documents.
"I was contacted by Mr. Caldwell about eight months ago," she explained.
"He told me that my mother's trust had been mismanaged and that he could help recover the money.""
I looked at the documents.
"How much?""
"Initially, he offered me $250,000.""
"And you accepted?""
Helen lowered her eyes.
"I was drowning in medical bills. My husband had died. I was raising two children alone. I thought I was signing an inheritance settlement.""
She pulled out another paper.
"But then he asked me to sign a declaration saying my mother had never been married to anyone named Richard Caldwell.""
Richard looked stunned.
"Why?""
Helen turned toward him.
"Because he told me your marriage was fraudulent.""
Richard stared.
"What?""
"He said you had hidden assets from Olivia's mother. He said my mother had been cheated out of her inheritance.""
I looked at Ethan.
"Did you tell her that?""
He remained silent.
Helen continued.
"He said if I cooperated, I would receive the money. If I didn't, he would make sure I received nothing.""
Richard shook his head.
"My wife never wanted money from me.""
Helen looked at him.
"Perhaps you should have told her that before she died.""
Richard went completely still.
I felt the atmosphere change.
This was no longer simply a financial scandal.
There was a family history buried beneath the stolen money.
And Ethan had been using it.
Margaret quietly took the documents.
"Madam Chairwoman, I recommend we move this discussion to a private room.""
I nodded.
Then I looked at Ethan.
"You're coming with us.""
He laughed bitterly.
"You can't order me around.""
I held his gaze.
"You're right. I can't order you around as your wife.""
I gestured toward Margaret.
"But I can require your cooperation as the chairwoman overseeing the company's investigation.""
Two security officers approached.
Ethan looked around desperately.
"You're not seriously going to have me escorted out in front of everyone.""
I remembered his microphone.
His laughter.
His arm around Vanessa.
His words about my body.
I leaned closer.
"Why not? You seemed perfectly comfortable humiliating me in front of three hundred people.""
He stared at me.
Then Helen spoke again.
"There's one more thing.""
Everyone turned.
She looked directly at Ethan.
"My mother didn't leave me just an inheritance.""
She removed a small photograph from her handbag.
It showed a young Olivia holding a baby.
On the back, written in faded blue ink, were six words.
Your brother knows what really happened.
Richard took the photograph.
His hands began to shake.
Because the baby in Olivia's arms wasn't a girl.
May you like
It was a boy.
And the date written beneath the photograph was two years before Ethan was born.
