Chapter 6: My Mother's Signature
I didn't sleep that night.
At 2:17 a.m., I sat alone in the guest bedroom of the hotel suite, staring at the message on my phone.
My mother knew about Olivia's children.
She had helped arrange the adoption.
I read the message again.
Then I opened my contacts and called Margaret.
She answered after the second ring.
"Claire?""
"Sorry. I know it's late.""
"Is everything all right?""
"No.""
I heard her sit up.
"What's happened?""
I forwarded the messages.
There was a long silence.
"Where did this number come from?"" she asked.
"I don't know.""
"Don't respond.""
"I wasn't planning to.""
"Claire, listen to me. We need to establish who sent these messages before making any assumptions.""
"I know.""
She paused.
"Did you recognize the name?""
"There was no name.""
"Then I'll have our security team investigate the number.""
I looked at the photograph of my mother on the bedside table.
"Margaret, did you ever hear my mother mention Olivia Caldwell?""
"No.""
"Or Richard's wife?""
"No. Why?""
"Someone claims my mother helped arrange an adoption.""
Margaret was quiet.
Then she said, "Your mother was involved in several charitable foundations. It's possible she supported an adoption organization without knowing the family's identity.""
"That's what I thought.""
"But we should verify it.""
I thanked her and ended the call.
A moment later, I received another message.
This time, it included a photograph.
It was a scanned copy of an old legal document.
The title read:
*PRIVATE ADOPTION AND FAMILY TRUST AGREEMENT — 1998.*
At the bottom were several signatures.
One belonged to Samuel Brooks.
Another belonged to Richard Caldwell.
And the third...
I stopped breathing.
*Eleanor Bennett.*
My mother's name.
I enlarged the photograph.
There was no mistaking the signature.
My mother had signed the document twenty-eight years earlier.
But why?
I called Richard.
He answered almost immediately.
"Claire?""
"Richard, I need you to come to my suite.""
"Is something wrong?""
"I found something.""
He arrived twenty minutes later, still wearing yesterday's suit.
His eyes looked tired.
When I showed him the document, he stared at it.
"Where did you get this?""
"Someone sent it to me.""
He took the phone.
Then he read the signatures again.
"Eleanor Bennett...""
He sat down.
"Your mother?""
"Yes.""
Richard rubbed his forehead.
"She was involved in the adoption?""
"Apparently.""
He stared at the screen for another moment.
Then he whispered something that made my stomach tighten.
"That explains everything.""
I sat opposite him.
"What do you mean?""
Richard looked at me.
"Your mother was Olivia's closest friend.""
I blinked.
"What?""
"Before Olivia left home, she spent nearly every weekend with Eleanor. They attended the same college for a short time.""
I stared at him.
"My mother never mentioned her.""
"She may have been protecting her.""
"Protecting her from what?""
Richard looked down.
"From me.""
The room seemed to tilt.
He explained that Olivia had become pregnant while she was still a teenager.
Her father had died years earlier, and her mother had struggled with severe financial problems.
Richard had been dating his future wife at the time.
He was young, ambitious, and desperate to build a business.
Olivia had not wanted to become a mother.
She had considered several options before deciding on adoption.
"My wife told me she had given birth to a child who died," Richard said.
"I believed her.""
"Why would she lie?""
"She was frightened. She thought I would leave her if I knew.""
I looked at the document again.
"And my mother helped her?""
Richard nodded.
"Eleanor arranged the legal assistance. She paid some of the medical expenses. She helped Olivia find a family.""
I swallowed.
"Who adopted the child?""
Richard shook his head.
"I don't know.""
He looked at the signature again.
"Your mother may have known.""
I sat back.
My mother had died four years earlier.
There would be no chance to ask her.
But perhaps there were records.
I picked up my phone and called my family's estate attorney.
It was nearly three in the morning in Connecticut, but he answered.
"Claire? Is everything okay?""
"I need you to locate my mother's private papers.""
"Which papers?""
"Anything concerning an adoption in 1998. Especially anything signed by Samuel Brooks or Richard Caldwell.""
He paused.
"That's very specific.""
"I know.""
"All right. I'll have someone check the archive first thing in the morning.""
"Thank you.""
After the call, Richard remained silent.
Then he asked, "Claire, why would someone send this to you?""
"I don't know.""
"Do you think Ethan knows?""
I thought about his reaction when the subject of Olivia's children came up.
His anger.
His sudden fear.
The way he had tried to leave.
"Yes," I said.
"I think he knows more than he's admitting.""
Richard nodded slowly.
"Then we need to find Samuel.""
At eight-thirty that morning, Margaret called.
"Claire, I've arranged the meeting. Samuel Brooks is expecting us at ten.""
"Good.""
"There's another development.""
"What?""
"The bank has frozen the remaining accounts associated with Calder Executive Ventures.""
"Any response from Ethan?""
"His attorney called twice. Ethan is requesting access to the company records.""
"Denied.""
"Already done.""
I glanced at Richard.
"Has the attempted transfer been stopped?""
"Yes. The $1.2 million never left the company's account.""
I breathed out.
"Good.""
Then Margaret added, "The forensic team also discovered a separate account linked to your mother's old charitable foundation.""
My fingers tightened.
"How much?""
"Approximately $640,000 was transferred out over the past year.""
I stared at her.
"That account belonged to my mother?""
"Yes.""
"Who authorized the transfers?""
"That's what we're investigating.""
I ended the call.
Richard was watching me.
"What's happened?""
I told him.
His face darkened.
"Ethan?""
"We don't know yet.""
Richard looked toward the window.
"That boy has gone further than I imagined.""
At ten, we arrived at the assisted-living residence.
Samuel Brooks was waiting in a small library.
He was eighty-one, thin, and walked with a silver cane. His white hair was neatly combed, and his eyes remained unusually bright.
When he saw Richard, he smiled faintly.
"Richard Caldwell. It's been a long time.""
Richard shook his hand.
"Samuel.""
Samuel turned toward me.
"And you must be Eleanor's daughter.""
"Claire.""
He nodded.
"Your mother was a remarkable woman.""
I sat opposite him.
"Did you know she helped arrange an adoption involving Olivia Caldwell?""
Samuel's expression changed.
"I was wondering when someone would ask.""
Richard leaned forward.
"Do you know who adopted the child?""
Samuel nodded.
"Yes.""
My heart began beating faster.
"Who?""
Samuel opened a small leather case.
He removed a file.
"I kept the original documentation because Eleanor specifically asked me to preserve it.""
He placed the file on the table.
Richard stared at it.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Your wife requested confidentiality. I was legally bound to respect it.""
Samuel turned toward me.
"Your mother believed the child deserved a safe childhood without the complications surrounding the Caldwell family.""
I opened the file.
The first page contained the child's birth details.
The second listed the adoptive parents.
I read the names.
Then read them again.
My hands began to shake.
"No.""
Richard looked at me.
"What is it?""
I couldn't answer.
Samuel spoke quietly.
"Your mother and Olivia agreed that the child should be raised away from the family conflict. Eleanor chose the adoptive parents herself.""
I looked up.
"Why would she choose them?""
Samuel folded his hands.
"Because she trusted them.""
I turned the page.
There was a photograph attached to the back.
A newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
And beneath it, the name of the adoptive family.
*BENNETT.*
I stared.
My surname.
My family's surname.
Richard leaned closer.
"Claire?""
I looked at him.
"The child...""
My voice broke.
"The child was adopted by my mother's older brother.""
Samuel nodded.
"Yes.""
Richard looked between us.
"Then who is it?""
I looked down at the next page.
The child's name after adoption was written clearly.
*JULIAN BENNETT.*
I knew that name.
I had known it all my life.
Julian was my cousin.
The boy who spent summers at my grandparents' house.
The man who had attended my wedding.
The person who had held my daughter’s baby shower invitation just two months earlier.
I covered my mouth.
"Julian is Olivia's son?""
Samuel nodded.
"Biologically, yes.""
Richard stood so quickly that his chair scraped against the floor.
"My wife's son has been in this family all along?""
I nodded.
But my attention was fixed on the final page.
There was another document.
A letter from my mother.
It was addressed to Samuel.
I unfolded it carefully.
Samuel,
I have made the arrangements as Olivia requested. The baby will be raised by my brother and his wife, who have promised to give him a loving home.
Richard must never be told unless Olivia decides otherwise.
There is one more thing you must understand. The child is entitled to his biological mother's inheritance, but I have established an additional protection fund in his name.
I am funding it privately.
If anyone ever attempts to exploit his identity or inheritance, I want the family to be protected.
I looked at the date.
Then at the signature.
My mother had created a separate fund for Julian.
And the account was still active.
Samuel leaned closer.
"There's something else, Claire.""
I looked up.
"Your mother left instructions that the fund could only be accessed by Julian after he reached thirty years of age.""
Richard frowned.
"How old is he now?""
"Thirty.""
My stomach tightened.
Samuel continued.
"His thirtieth birthday was last month.""
I looked at the account documents.
The fund had recently become eligible for distribution.
And there was a transfer request attached.
I read the amount.
Then the authorization.
The requested withdrawal was for $4.6 million.
The beneficiary was Julian Bennett.
But the person who had submitted the request wasn't Julian.
It was Ethan Caldwell.
I looked at Richard.
He seemed unable to breathe.
My husband had been trying to access the money belonging to his newly discovered half-brother.
And the next page revealed something even worse.
A forged authorization bearing Julian's signature.
I slowly closed the file.
"Samuel, has Julian been told any of this?""
Samuel shook his head.
"No. As far as I know, he believes his parents are his biological parents.""
I looked at the forged signature again.
Then I called Margaret.
She answered immediately.
"Claire?""
"Find Julian. Right now.""
"What's happened?""
"Ethan has attempted to steal money from a trust belonging to my cousin.""
A pause.
"Understood.""
"And Margaret?""
"Yes?""
"Don't contact Ethan yet.""
I looked at Richard.
He was staring at the photograph of Olivia's baby.
I lowered my voice.
"There's something we need to do before my husband realizes we've found the truth.""
But just as I ended the call, my phone rang again.
It was Julian.
I answered.
"Julian?""
His voice sounded confused.
"Claire, I need you to tell me something.""
"What happened?""
"I just received a call from a lawyer. He says my biological mother was Olivia Caldwell.""
I closed my eyes.
He continued.
"And apparently, someone has already withdrawn money from an inheritance account in my name.""
My blood turned cold.
"How much?""
Julian paused.
Then he said:
"Four million six hundred thousand dollars.""
A second later, he added something that made my entire body go rigid.
"Claire, the lawyer says the withdrawal was approved using a document signed by someone in your family.""
I looked at the forged signature in front of me.
"Who?""
Julian's voice dropped.
"Your husband.""
May you like
And then he said the words I had been dreading.
"He's coming to my house tonight. He says he has something important to tell me about my birth parents.""
