Chapter 8: The Woman Who Gave Him Away
The woman standing at the ballroom entrance didn’t move.
Neither did Daniel.
For several seconds, they simply looked at each other.
The room disappeared.
The guests disappeared.
The ruined wedding.
The broken promises.
The endless secrets.
Everything faded into the background.
Because standing twenty feet away was a stranger with his eyes.
His face.
His expression.
Daniel had spent his entire life wondering who he looked like.
When he was younger, he would stare into the mirror and search for clues.
Was his smile from his father?
Were his eyes from his mother?
Did his laugh belong to someone he had never met?
He had never imagined the answer would be standing in front of him.
The woman took a slow step forward.
Her hands were shaking.
“Daniel.””
Hearing his name from her mouth felt strange.
Not wrong.
Just unfamiliar.
Daniel looked at his mother.
She was crying.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Sad.
Like she had been waiting for this moment and dreading it at the same time.
The woman looked at Daniel’s mother.
“I’m sorry.””
His mother closed her eyes.
And nodded.
That confused Daniel more than anything.
They knew each other.
Not just knew.
They had history.
A lifetime of history.
Daniel’s voice came out quietly.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
“I’m Anna.””
She swallowed.
“I’m your biological mother.””
The words should have felt impossible.
But after everything that had happened tonight, impossible had become normal.
Daniel looked at the woman.
At Anna.
And he didn’t know what he was supposed to feel.
Anger?
Curiosity?
Pain?
Nothing came.
Only emptiness.
“You knew where I was?””
Anna looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
More than he expected.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“For thirty-two years.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Then why didn’t you come?””
The question was simple.
But the pain behind it filled the entire room.
Anna’s eyes filled.
“Because I promised.””
“Promised who?””
She looked at his mother.
Daniel followed her gaze.
His mother looked away.
The answer was obvious.
A promise.
Another secret.
Another choice made without him.
Daniel laughed softly.
“Of course.””
He shook his head.
“Everyone made promises about me.””
His voice grew heavier.
“Everyone decided what was best for me.””
Anna stepped closer.
“I wanted to come.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because I was afraid.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
That word again.
Afraid.
Everyone was afraid.
His mother.
Claire.
Emily.
Thomas.
Anna.
Fear had become the excuse everyone used.
Anna continued.
“I was sixteen when I had you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I know.””
She looked surprised.
“Who told you?””
“Thomas.””
Her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“He’s here.””
Daniel nodded.
Anna looked toward Thomas.
Her face hardened.
“You should not have brought this here.””
Thomas replied calmly.
“You hid the truth for decades.””
Anna shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Daniel.
“I protected him.””
Daniel felt something twist inside him.
Because those were the exact words everyone used.
Protected.
Helped.
Saved.
But everyone’s protection had caused damage.
“What really happened?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Anna walked closer.
“I was sixteen.””
Her voice was soft.
“I had no family support. My parents wanted nothing to do with me after they found out I was pregnant.””
Daniel listened.
“I was scared. I didn’t know how to raise a child. I didn’t even know how to take care of myself.””
She looked at him.
“But when I held you…”
Her voice broke.
“I knew I loved you.””
Daniel looked down.
“Then why leave?””
The question came out harsher than he intended.
Anna nodded.
“I deserved that question.””
She wiped her tears.
“I left because loving you wasn’t enough.””
Nobody spoke.
“I needed to know you would have more than I could give.””
Daniel stared.
“And you chose my mother?””
Anna looked at her.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why?””
Anna smiled sadly.
“Because she was the first person who held you after me.””
His mother began crying.
“She saved my life.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
Anna continued.
“She worked at the hospital where I gave birth. When I told her I couldn’t raise you, she didn’t judge me.””
She looked at Michael.
“Your father supported her decision.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“I knew?””
Michael nodded.
“I did.””
Daniel shook his head.
“How many people knew my entire life except me?””
Nobody answered.
Anna looked down.
“I asked your mother to adopt you.””
Daniel froze.
“You asked her?””
“Yes.””
The room went quiet.
“I didn’t disappear because I didn’t love you.””
Anna’s voice cracked.
“I disappeared because I loved you enough to let you go.””
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time that night, he saw the difference between abandonment and sacrifice.
They could look identical from far away.
But they were not the same.
He looked at his mother.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who had spent thirty-two years being his mother without ever having to be.
“I’m sorry.””
His mother looked surprised.
“For what?””
“For making you carry this alone.””
Her face broke.
“I never wanted you to feel responsible for my pain.””
“But you were afraid I would leave.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at her.
“And that was unfair.””
A tear fell down her cheek.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised him.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just truth.
Then Thomas spoke.
“You’re all ignoring the real issue.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked at him.
“You mean there’s more?””
Thomas looked at Anna.
“She never told you why she disappeared.””
Anna’s face changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What is he talking about?””
Thomas stepped forward.
“She didn’t just give you up because she was young.””
Anna looked at him.
“Stop.””
Daniel felt his heart sink.
“What?””
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“Your biological mother left because someone threatened her.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Anna.
“Who?””
Anna didn’t answer.
Thomas did.
“Your grandfather.””
Daniel froze.
“My grandfather?””
Anna closed her eyes.
“He found out I was pregnant.””
Daniel waited.
“And?””
She looked at him.
“He told me if I tried to keep you, he would make sure you never had a safe life.””
Daniel felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
Anna swallowed.
“He had connections. Money. Influence.””
Thomas nodded.
“He convinced her that disappearing was the only way to protect you.””
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“And you knew this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
That was becoming a familiar pattern.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why did you know everything?””
Thomas remained silent.
Then Anna spoke.
“Because Thomas was there.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at Thomas.
“You weren’t my lawyer.””
Thomas’ face changed.
“You promised me you would never tell him.””
Daniel stared.
“What is she talking about?””
Anna’s voice shook.
“Thomas was my social worker.””
The room went completely silent.
Daniel looked at Thomas.
A social worker.
Not a lawyer.
Not just someone who handled records.
Someone who had been there at the beginning.
Thomas had known the truth from day one.
Anna continued.
“He helped arrange the adoption.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“So why pretend to be my mother’s attorney?””
Thomas said nothing.
Anna looked at him.
“Because he wanted control over the story.””
Daniel turned toward Thomas.
“Is that true?””
For the first time, Thomas looked less like a powerful man.
And more like someone whose secret had finally been exposed.
“I wanted to protect you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You wanted to own the truth.””
Thomas’ expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what I’ve done for you.””
Daniel looked around the room.
At all the people who had hidden things from him.
At all the people who claimed love while taking away his choices.
“I understand perfectly.””
He pointed toward the door.
“Everyone who says they protected me made sure I had no voice.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Anna stepped forward.
She held out the faded photograph.
“I kept this for you.””
Daniel looked at it.
A picture of a teenage girl holding a newborn baby.
Anna.
And him.
On the back was a handwritten message.
Daniel turned it over.
The words were simple.
But they destroyed him.
*I loved you before I knew how to be your mother.*
His eyes filled.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked.
Unknown number.
Daniel stared at the screen.
After everything, he almost ignored it.
But something told him not to.
He answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
A voice he didn’t recognize.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
There was a pause.
Then:
“I’m calling because I found your original birth records.””
Daniel looked at Anna.
At Thomas.
At his family.
The woman continued.
“And there’s something you need to know.””
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
“What?””
The voice lowered.
“Your biological mother wasn’t the only person who gave you up.””
Daniel froze.
“What does that mean?””
A pause.
Then the woman said:
“Your father also signed papers.””
Michael went pale.
Daniel slowly turned toward him.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
his father looked afraid.
