Chapter 6: The Secret Behind His Mother’s Silence

Daniel read the message again.

Then again.

The words remained the same.

*You need to stop searching for answers. You don’t know who your mother really is.*

For the first time that night, his anger disappeared.

Not because he felt better.

Because something worse had replaced it.

Confusion.

Claire had lied.

Emily had lied.

But now there was another person involved.

Someone Daniel had never considered.

His mother’s lawyer.

A person whose entire job was supposed to be protecting her.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“Mom.””

His mother looked at him.

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did he.

And that terrified him.

Because the entire night had followed a pattern.

Every time Daniel thought he finally understood what happened, another door opened.

Another secret appeared.

Another person stepped out of the shadows.

He turned toward Claire.

“You knew about this?””

Claire shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

Her voice cracked.

“I swear, Daniel. I didn’t know he sent that.””

“He?””

Claire froze.

Daniel noticed.

“You know who it is.””

She looked away.

That was enough.

“Claire.””

She closed her eyes.

“His name is Thomas Reed.””

Daniel stared.

The name meant nothing.

Until his mother reacted.

A small movement.

A tiny breath.

But Daniel saw it.

“You know him.””

His mother didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

She looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

The room became quiet again.

Daniel felt exhausted.

Like he had lived years in a single evening.

“Who is he?””

His mother sat down slowly.

For the first time all night, she looked older.

Not weak.

Just tired.

“Thomas was my attorney for almost fifteen years.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would he send that message?””

His mother looked at the phone.

“Because he thinks he’s protecting me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“By threatening me?””

She didn’t answer.

And that silence bothered him.

“Mom.””

She looked up.

“There are things I never told you.””

The words landed heavily.

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“What things?””

His mother looked toward his father.

Michael stepped closer.

“We were hoping you would never need to know.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Apparently everyone hoped that.””

Nobody responded.

He looked around the room.

“My whole life, everyone has been deciding what I could handle.””

His voice trembled.

“I’m thirty-two years old.””

He pointed toward himself.

“I’m not a child.””

His mother nodded.

“I know.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She looked at him.

A long moment passed.

Then she said:

“Your father and I were not always the people you thought we were.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

His father looked uncomfortable.

His mother took a breath.

“When you were eight years old, your father and I almost divorced.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“I didn’t tell you because you were young.””

“I remember you fighting.””

Her eyes softened.

“You remember more than we realized.””

Daniel looked between them.

“I thought it was normal.””

His father looked down.

“It wasn’t.””

His mother continued.

“There was a business problem.””

Daniel frowned.

“Dad’s company?””

Michael nodded.

“We lost a major contract. We were in debt. A lot of debt.””

Daniel remembered those years.

The smaller house.

The older car.

His mother working late.

His father staying in the office.

“But what does that have to do with Thomas?””

His mother looked away.

“Thomas helped us.””

Daniel waited.

“And?””

She swallowed.

“He didn’t do it for free.””

The room went still.

“What does that mean?””

His father answered.

“Thomas made sure we kept our home. He handled the legal side of our financial problems.””

Daniel looked confused.

“That sounds like he helped.””

“He did,” his mother said.

“But?””

His father’s expression darkened.

“But Thomas liked having influence.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Influence?””

His mother nodded.

“He became someone who always had an opinion about our decisions.””

Daniel looked at the phone.

“So he’s controlling?””

“No.””

His mother hesitated.

“He believes he’s necessary.””

That was somehow worse.

Because people who believed they were helping could justify anything.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“And how does he know you?””

Claire’s face tightened.

She didn’t answer.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Claire.””

She sighed.

“I met him through your mother.””

“When?””

“After we started having problems.””

Daniel shook his head.

“What problems?””

Claire looked at him.

“With your mother.””

He closed his eyes briefly.

Of course.

Everything returned to the same place.

His mother.

His family.

The story everyone had built around them.

“What did Thomas tell you?””

Claire looked uncomfortable.

“That your mother had a history of controlling people.””

Daniel’s mother looked hurt.

“Claire.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

His mother shook her head.

“I need to hear this.””

Claire continued.

“He showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“Emails. Financial records. Legal notes.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“About what?””

Claire hesitated.

“About how much influence she had over your father’s decisions.””

Michael suddenly spoke.

“That’s not what happened.””

Claire looked at him.

“You weren’t there.””

“I was.””

The force in his voice surprised everyone.

“I was there when we almost lost everything.””

He looked at Daniel.

“Your mother didn’t control me.””

He took a breath.

“She saved us.””

Silence.

Daniel looked at his mother.

She looked embarrassed.

Not proud.

Embarrassed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She smiled sadly.

“Because I didn’t want you to remember your childhood as a financial crisis.””

Daniel looked down.

His whole life, he had seen his mother as someone who worried too much.

Someone who asked too many questions.

Someone who wanted control.

But what if the truth was different?

What if she had spent years trying to prevent another disaster?

Claire shook her head.

“But that doesn’t change everything.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What doesn’t?””

“That your mother still interfered.””

His expression hardened.

“Interfered how?””

Claire hesitated.

And Daniel noticed.

She had fewer answers now.

Because the story was changing.

“She questioned everything.””

“That’s not a crime.””

“She questioned us.””

“Because she cared.””

“She questioned whether I was good enough for you.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Did you?””

His mother’s eyes filled.

“No.””

Claire looked shocked.

“You did.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“I questioned whether you were happy.””

The words struck Claire harder than anger would have.

Daniel watched her.

For the first time, he saw something complicated in her face.

Not just guilt.

Hurt.

Maybe she had genuinely believed her own story.

Maybe that was what made everything dangerous.

A person could hurt you while believing they were saving themselves.

The ballroom doors suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray suit.

Leather briefcase.

Calm expression.

Like he had walked into the wrong room by mistake.

Except Daniel knew immediately.

Everyone did.

Because Claire stepped back.

His mother whispered:

“Thomas.””

The man looked around.

At the guests.

At the destroyed wedding.

At Daniel.

Then he smiled slightly.

“I see I arrived earlier than expected.””

Daniel stared.

“You sent that message.””

Thomas looked at the phone in his hand.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked him.

“You admit it?””

“Of course.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?””

Thomas adjusted his jacket.

“Because you are making decisions based on incomplete information.””

Daniel laughed.

“Incomplete information?””

He looked around.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Thomas remained calm.

“Because it is true.””

Daniel pointed toward him.

“You helped my fiancée separate me from my family.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel frowned.

“No?””

“I helped Claire protect herself.””

Claire looked at him.

“Thomas…”

He ignored her.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Protect herself from what?””

Thomas looked at Daniel’s mother.

And then said the sentence that changed the entire room.

“From the woman who has been lying to you since the day you were born.””

Daniel froze.

His mother’s face went white.

Michael immediately stepped forward.

“Leave.””

Thomas smiled.

“You still protect her.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What is he talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Thomas opened his briefcase.

“I think it’s time Daniel finally sees the truth.””

He placed a file on the nearest table.

Inside was a document.

An old document.

With Daniel’s name written on it.

Thomas looked directly at him.

“Your mother told you that she gave birth to you.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Thomas pushed the file toward him.

“But she never told you the whole story.””

Daniel looked at the document.

His hands began to shake.

Because at the top of the page were words that made his entire childhood feel like a lie.
