Chapter 6: My Brother's Confession

"Ethan, what did you just say?""
My brother didn't answer immediately.
I could hear traffic in the background.
Then a car door slammed.
"Mara, I need you to listen.""
"Where are you?""
"Outside the city.""
"Why?""
"Because Martin knows I have something.""
I looked at Eleanor.
She had stopped writing.
"Do you have the second ledger?""
"No.""
"Then what do you have?""
Ethan exhaled.
"A copy of the first page.""
I sat down.
"How did you get it?""
"From Dad's office.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't know who I could trust.""
"You're my brother.""
"I know.""
His voice cracked.
"That's why I'm calling you.""
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Ethan was four years younger than me.
When we were children, he used to follow me around the house, asking me to build cardboard forts and help him hide from our mother when he broke something.
After our father died, he became distant.
He stopped attending family dinners.
He ignored my calls.
I had assumed he was grieving.
Now I wondered what else he had been hiding.
"Ethan," I said, "did you know Daniel was stealing from the trust?""
A long silence followed.
"Yes.""
The word was barely audible.
I gripped the edge of the desk.
"How long?""
"Almost two years.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"Two years?""
"He came to me after Dad died. He said the company needed temporary liquidity. He said the trust had agreed to release some money.""
"Did you believe him?""
"At first.""
"And then?""
"I saw the transfers.""
My voice sharpened.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Martin threatened me.""
I stood.
"With what?""
"An old loan.""
"What loan?""
Ethan hesitated.
Then he said something that made my stomach turn.
"I borrowed money from Martin when I was twenty-six.""
I stared at the phone.
"How much?""
"Three hundred thousand.""
"For what?""
"An investment that failed.""
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
"Ethan.""
"I know.""
"Three hundred thousand dollars?""
"I was stupid.""
"Did you repay it?""
"Most of it.""
"Then why is he threatening you?""
"Because the agreement was never really about repayment. Martin made me sign a personal guarantee. He said if I ever spoke about the trust, he'd make sure the remaining balance became immediately due.""
I looked at Eleanor.
She mouthed, Keep him talking.
I took a breath.
"Where are you?""
"At a motel near the interstate.""
"Send me the address.""
"I can't.""
"Ethan, you need to stop running.""
"You don't understand. Martin has people watching the house.""
I looked through the study window.
The driveway was visible below.
The black SUV was still there.
But Martin was no longer standing beside it.
"Did you send anyone to the house today?""
"No.""
"Did you tell Daniel about the recording?""
"What recording?""
I glanced at Eleanor.
She shook her head.
I decided not to mention it.
"Nothing. Just tell me what you have.""
Ethan lowered his voice.
"I have a photograph of the original ledger.""
"Where?""
"In Dad's old office at the investment company.""
"Why didn't you take it?""
"Because Daniel was there.""
My stomach tightened.
"When?""
"Last Tuesday.""
I checked the calendar on my phone.
Last Tuesday was the day Daniel had told me he was attending a two-day management retreat.
He had returned home with a gift bag from a luxury hotel.
He had kissed my cheek.
He had asked how Lily was sleeping.
And while I was preparing her bottle, he had apparently been searching my father's office.
"What was in the photograph?""
Ethan paused.
"Names.""
"Whose names?""
"People who were never supposed to appear in the trust records.""
"Give me one.""
He swallowed.
"Martin Hale.""
I closed my eyes.
"Another.""
"Daniel.""
I waited.
Then he said:
"Your name.""
I opened my eyes.
"What?""
"You're listed as the controlling beneficiary. But there's another column. It shows who has authority to activate the dormant ownership clause.""
"What does that mean?""
"I don't know. But your name is there, Mara.""
Eleanor moved closer.
"Ask him whether he has a copy of the full page.""
I repeated the question.
Ethan answered immediately.
"Yes.""
"Where is it?""
"In a cloud account.""
"Send it to Eleanor.""
"I can't. Martin has access.""
"Then send it to me.""
"I'll try.""
The call suddenly crackled.
"Ethan?""
A muffled sound came through.
Then he whispered:
"Mara, somebody's here.""
My heart lurched.
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
"Lock the door.""
"I did.""
A heavy knock sounded through the phone.
Ethan stopped speaking.
Then a man's voice called from somewhere nearby.
"Mr. Whitmore? We need to talk.""
I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.
"Ethan, don't open the door!""
The call disconnected.
I stared at the screen.
Eleanor immediately took out her phone.
"We need his location.""
I opened our messages.
A new text arrived.
It contained an address.
Then another message appeared.
*Don't come alone.*
I looked at Eleanor.
"We're going.""
She shook her head.
"Not without security.""
Within twenty minutes, Eleanor had arranged for a security driver and contacted local authorities to request a welfare check.
I stayed in the car with Lily's portable carrier beside me.
The drive felt endless.
When we arrived, the motel's parking lot was nearly empty.
A flickering neon sign buzzed above the entrance.
Room 214.
The curtains were closed.
The door stood slightly open.
Eleanor signaled the security driver to remain outside.
She approached with me behind her.
"Ethan?""
No answer.
She knocked.
The door moved inward.
The room was empty.
A chair had been overturned.
A lamp lay broken beside the bed.
On the floor was a small pool of water from a knocked-over bottle.
I stepped inside.
"Ethan?""
My voice echoed against the walls.
His phone lay on the mattress.
Beside it was a photograph.
I picked it up.
It showed the first page of my father's second ledger.
There were columns of numbers, dates, account references, and names.
I recognized Daniel's name.
Martin's.
Then I saw something else.
A company called Whitmore Legacy Holdings.
I had never heard of it.
At the bottom of the page was a handwritten instruction.
*Transfer authority upon Mara's divorce.*
I stared at the words.
Eleanor took the photograph.
"That's important.""
"Why?""
She pointed to the date.
The document had been prepared eleven months earlier.
The same month I discovered I was pregnant.
My hands began trembling.
Daniel hadn't simply planned to leave me.
He had planned to divorce me at a very specific moment.
"What's Whitmore Legacy Holdings?"" I asked.
Eleanor looked at the company name.
"I don't know yet.""
She took out her phone and photographed the document.
Then she noticed a small white envelope tucked beneath the mattress.
My name was written on it.
Mara.
I opened it.
Inside was a single key card and a note.
Sis, I'm sorry. If you find this, go to Dad's old office. The safe is behind the portrait of Grandma. Don't trust anyone who says the second ledger is gone.
I looked up.
"Grandma's portrait.""
Eleanor nodded.
"That's in the investment building.""
"Then that's where we're going.""
Before she could answer, the motel television suddenly switched on.
A news bulletin appeared.
The headline read:
*WHITMORE GROUP CEO FACES INTERNAL FINANCIAL INVESTIGATION.*
Daniel's photograph filled the screen.
A reporter stood outside the company's headquarters.
I watched as the news footage changed.
Daniel was leaving the building, surrounded by reporters.
He looked furious.
Then a second headline appeared beneath his photograph.
*BOARD MEMBER ETHAN WHITMORE REPORTED MISSING.*
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I opened the message.
*You have until midnight to stop looking for the second ledger. Otherwise, your brother won't be the only Whitmore who disappears.*
I read it twice.
Then another message arrived.
This one included a photograph.
It showed Lily's nursery.
My daughter's crib.
Her pink blanket.
The small stuffed rabbit my mother had bought for her.
Someone had photographed the room from inside my house.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Eleanor immediately took the phone.
"Whoever sent this has been inside your property.""
I looked at Lily.
She was sleeping peacefully.
Then I looked at the photograph again.
There was something reflected in the nursery window.
A man's silhouette.
And I recognized the watch on his wrist.
Daniel's watch.
The one I had given him for his thirty-fifth birthday.
I slowly looked at Eleanor.
"He was there.""
She studied the photograph.
Then she whispered:
"Mara, we need to get your daughter somewhere safe.""
I nodded.
But before we could leave, another message arrived.
*Ask your brother what happened to your mother.*
My fingers went numb.
My mother had died when I was sixteen.
A car accident.
At least, that was what my father had always told us.
I looked at the message.
Then at the photograph of the ledger.
And suddenly, I understood that my father's secrets went much further back than Daniel's betrayal.
Because if someone was threatening me with the truth about my mother, then the second ledger wasn't just evidence of corporate fraud.
May you like
It contained the history of my entire family.
And somewhere in that history was the reason my husband had been so desperate to marry me in the first place.
