Chapter 4: The Ledger My Father Hid

"The second ledger is missing?""

I repeated Eleanor's words slowly.

She nodded.

"Your father maintained two separate records. The first documented the trust's ordinary investments, distributions, and voting rights. The second contained confidential transactions, beneficial ownership records, and private agreements.""

"Why would he keep two ledgers?""

"Because he didn't trust everyone who had access to the first one.""

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

He was standing beside the dining table, his hands clenched at his sides. Martin had stopped pretending to be calm. Vanessa was holding her handbag against her stomach like a shield.

I looked at Eleanor.

"Who knew about the second ledger?""

"Your father, me, and one other person.""

"Who?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"Your grandmother.""

I blinked.

"My grandmother died twelve years ago.""

"Yes. But before she passed, she established a private custodial arrangement. Your father inherited responsibility for it. The second ledger was part of that arrangement.""

Martin suddenly laughed.

"This is ridiculous. Robert was a businessman, not a character in some mystery novel.""

Eleanor turned toward him.

"Then you shouldn't have any difficulty explaining why you accessed a sealed storage vault using credentials that belonged to a deceased trustee.""

Martin's smile vanished.

"I never accessed that vault.""

"Your vehicle was recorded entering the facility.""

"I wasn't driving.""

Eleanor nodded.

"That's why we have the footage.""

She opened her folder and placed three photographs on the coffee table.

The first showed Daniel entering the storage building.

The second showed Vanessa following him.

The third showed Martin standing beside a black vehicle outside the building.

Daniel looked at the photographs.

"Those don't prove anything.""

"They establish a timeline," Eleanor replied.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"I didn't know what we were doing.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Vanessa, stop.""

"No. You told me we were collecting old corporate documents.""

"We were.""

"You told me the ledger was useless!""

Martin stood abruptly.

"Young lady, I suggest you choose your next words carefully.""

Vanessa flinched.

I watched her.

A few hours earlier, she had placed her suitcase beside my wedding photographs and told me Daniel deserved happiness.

Now she looked terrified.

But I wasn't ready to mistake fear for innocence.

"Vanessa," I said, "why did you go into my father's vault?""

She swallowed.

"Daniel asked me to.""

"Why?""

"He said there was a document that could protect the company.""

"Protect it from what?""

She looked at Daniel.

He shook his head almost imperceptibly.

I saw it.

So did Eleanor.

"Answer the question," Eleanor said.

Vanessa's fingers tightened around her handbag.

"He said your father had made an agreement that gave Daniel control of the trust after your marriage.""

I stared at her.

"That agreement was forged.""

"I didn't know that.""

"Did you see it?""

She nodded.

"Daniel showed me a copy.""

I looked at my husband.

"You told her you owned my family's trust?""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"I told her there were arrangements.""

"Arrangements that somehow allowed you to take money from my family's investment company?""

He didn't answer.

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Mr. Whitmore, I strongly advise you not to discuss the financial transactions without counsel.""

Daniel ignored her.

"Mara, you need to understand something. Your father never wanted you involved in the business. He knew you weren't interested in running a company.""

I looked at him.

"You're right. I wasn't interested in running your company.""

"Then why are you doing this?""

"Because you stole from my family.""

His face hardened.

"I built that company.""

"With my family's money.""

"I made it profitable.""

"With my family's connections.""

"I made the decisions.""

"And apparently, you made some very bad ones.""

For the first time, he looked genuinely furious.

He stepped toward me.

"You think having a baby makes you untouchable? You think the courts will let you take my daughter away because you have money?""

Lily stirred against my chest.

I immediately lowered my voice.

"Don't use our daughter to frighten me.""

"I'm her father.""

"Then start acting like one.""

The officer near the entrance asked Daniel to step away from the documents.

He reluctantly moved back.

Eleanor leaned toward me.

"We should speak privately.""

I followed her into the kitchen.

She closed the door.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she placed a small envelope on the counter.

"Your father gave me this four days before he died.""

My throat tightened.

"Why didn't you give it to me earlier?""

"Because he instructed me to wait until the trust's control was threatened by a beneficiary or an outside party.""

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written across it in my father's handwriting.

Mara.

Just that.

I recognized the slant of the M. The little flourish beneath the final letter.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

My darling Mara,

If you're reading this, someone has tried to take something that belongs to you.

I hope I'm wrong about who it is.

But if I'm right, don't waste your strength trying to understand why they betrayed you. Find out what they wanted.

Money is rarely the real reason people betray one another. Control is.

The second ledger contains the truth. But the ledger is not the most important thing I left you.

Look for the blue key.

And remember: the person who asks you to trust them the most is not always the person who deserves it.

Love always, Dad.

I read it twice.

Then I pressed the letter against my chest.

For a moment, I wasn't a businesswoman, an investor, or a wife facing divorce.

I was a little girl sitting beside her father's hospital bed, asking him to come home.

I swallowed the ache.

"What's the blue key?"" I asked.

Eleanor looked toward the hallway.

"I was hoping you would know.""

I shook my head.

"My father collected antique keys. He kept them in his study.""

"Then perhaps we should start there.""

Before I could answer, a crash came from the living room.

We rushed back.

Daniel had knocked a chair sideways.

Martin was standing near the front door, arguing with the officers.

Vanessa was crying.

And the blue folder containing the original investment agreements had disappeared from the coffee table.

"Where's the folder?"" Eleanor demanded.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

He stared at me.

Then I noticed something.

His right hand was tucked inside his jacket.

"Daniel.""

He didn't move.

"Give Eleanor the folder.""

He shook his head.

"I don't have it.""

I stepped closer.

"Then why are you holding your jacket like that?""

The officer approached.

"Sir, please keep your hands visible.""

Daniel slowly withdrew his hand.

It was empty.

But the folder wasn't anywhere in the room.

Eleanor looked at Martin.

"Did you take it?""

Martin's expression remained blank.

"I have no idea what you're talking about.""

Then Vanessa began crying harder.

"I took it.""

Everyone turned.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out the blue folder.

Daniel's face changed.

"Vanessa!""

She held it against her chest.

"You told me to take it!""

"I told you to protect it!""

"From whom? Your wife?""

He took a step toward her.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"There's something else you should know.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Daniel didn't come up with the divorce plan yesterday.""

She looked at the suitcase by the entrance.

"He told me he had been preparing for this for almost a year.""

A year.

Before Lily was born.

Before I had started noticing the late-night calls.

Before Daniel began insisting that I was too tired to discuss business.

Vanessa reached into her handbag again.

This time, she pulled out a small photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside my father's grave.

The date printed on the back was three months after the funeral.

And written beneath it were five words.

*The second ledger is buried here.*

I looked at Eleanor.

Then at Daniel.

His expression told me everything.

May you like

He knew where my father had hidden it.

And he had been planning to retrieve it long before he brought Vanessa into my home.
