Chapter 3: The Man My Father Warned Me About

The doorbell rang.
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
Vanessa immediately moved behind him.
I recognized the man standing outside before he even knocked again.
Martin Hale.
My father's former business partner.
The man who had attended every major Whitmore family event until the day my father died.
The man who had disappeared from our lives afterward.
And the man whose name had just appeared in a financial investigation involving $1.8 million.
I opened the door.
"Martin.""
He gave me a small smile.
"Mara. It's been a long time.""
"What are you doing here?""
"I heard there was some confusion.""
I glanced at the black SUV behind him.
"That's an interesting way to describe an unauthorized financial transfer.""
His smile disappeared.
"May I come in?""
"No.""
He looked past me.
"Daniel?""
My husband appeared behind my shoulder.
"Martin. What the hell is going on?""
Martin stepped inside without waiting for an invitation.
He removed his leather gloves and placed them on the entry table.
"Perhaps we should all sit down.""
I kept one hand on the door.
"You have five minutes.""
Martin looked at me.
"Your father would have wanted us to handle this privately.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Don't use my father to get through my front door.""
For the first time, Martin looked uncomfortable.
He walked into the living room anyway.
Daniel followed him.
Vanessa stayed close behind.
I returned to the nursery, checked Lily, and brought her back in my arms.
Martin's eyes settled on her.
"Beautiful child.""
"Thank you.""
"Robert would have been delighted.""
I said nothing.
Martin sat down.
Daniel immediately began speaking.
"Tell her this is a misunderstanding. Tell her the transfers were approved.""
Martin leaned back.
"They were part of a restructuring.""
I looked at him.
"Where are the contracts?""
"Being finalized.""
"Where are the invoices?""
"Those are with our accountants.""
"Which accountants?""
Martin sighed.
"Mara, you're making this unnecessarily complicated.""
I almost laughed.
A man connected to nearly two million dollars in questionable transfers was sitting in my living room, explaining that I was making things complicated.
"Let me make this simple. You will provide every document Eleanor requests.""
Martin studied me.
"You've changed.""
"I had a baby. People tend to change.""
He glanced at Daniel.
"Your husband tells me you've been under a lot of stress.""
"Did he also tell you he brought his girlfriend into my house and demanded a divorce?""
Martin looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"That's unfortunate," he said.
"Unfortunate?""
"Marriage is complicated.""
I shifted Lily against my chest.
"Financial fraud is less complicated.""
Martin's expression hardened.
"Be careful with accusations.""
I reached for the blue folder on the table.
"Then be careful with signatures.""
I opened the folder to a page containing an authorization record.
It showed a transfer request submitted using Daniel's credentials and approved under an emergency operating authority.
But the approval signature was unfamiliar.
I turned the page toward Martin.
"Who authorized this?""
He barely looked at it.
"Administrative processing.""
"Who?""
He stood.
"I don't appreciate being interrogated in a private residence.""
"Then you should have stayed outside.""
Daniel moved between us.
"Mara, stop. Martin is here to help.""
I stared at my husband.
"Help whom?""
"Us.""
"There is no us, Daniel.""
He looked at Lily.
For a second, something resembling guilt crossed his face.
Then his phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
"What's wrong?"" Vanessa asked.
He didn't answer.
A second message arrived.
Then a third.
Martin held out his hand.
"Let me see.""
Daniel turned the phone away.
I watched the two men exchange a glance.
It was quick.
But it told me more than either of them intended.
They had discussed this before.
Martin knew about the transfers.
And Daniel had brought Vanessa into my home because he believed he had already secured his financial future.
I sat down.
"Martin, when did you last speak to my father?""
He looked at me.
"Shortly before he passed.""
"What did he tell you?""
"Nothing important.""
"Did he mention the trust?""
Martin adjusted his cuff.
"Your father was very protective of his family.""
"That's not an answer.""
He looked toward Daniel.
"Perhaps this conversation should happen without emotions involved.""
I smiled faintly.
"Then you'll love Eleanor.""
Martin's eyes narrowed.
"Your attorney?""
"She's already reviewing the documents.""
He reached into his coat and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
"Your father left some arrangements that you may not fully understand.""
I looked at the paper.
"What arrangements?""
"Certain investments were never meant to be controlled by you personally.""
Daniel suddenly looked up.
"What?""
Martin continued.
"Robert and I made an agreement years ago. The family trust was supposed to remain passive. It was never intended to interfere with company management.""
I held out my hand.
"Let me see that.""
He hesitated.
Then passed me the paper.
It was a photocopy of an agreement.
The date was four years earlier.
The day before my father's funeral.
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
My father's signature appeared at the bottom.
But something was wrong.
I had seen his handwriting thousands of times.
This signature was too smooth.
Too deliberate.
And the final letter in his surname was shaped incorrectly.
"Where did you get this?""
Martin folded his arms.
"From the original corporate archive.""
"Who witnessed it?""
"Your father and me.""
I looked at the date again.
My father had been unconscious in the hospital for nearly two days before he died.
He couldn't have signed anything.
I raised my eyes.
"This is a forgery.""
Martin's face tightened.
"Be very careful.""
"Did you forge my father's signature?""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Mara, don't.""
I looked at him.
"Did you know?""
He rubbed his mouth.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
Vanessa suddenly picked up her handbag.
"I think I should leave.""
Martin turned sharply.
"Sit down.""
She froze.
The command was so harsh that even Daniel looked at him.
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"Excuse me?""
Martin took one step toward her.
"Nobody leaves until we finish this conversation.""
I stood.
"Get away from her.""
For a moment, the room became completely still.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Three firm knocks.
I opened it.
Two uniformed officers stood outside with a woman holding a document folder.
Behind them was Eleanor Price.
She looked directly at me.
"Mara, I need you to confirm that Daniel Whitmore and Martin Hale are both inside.""
I nodded.
"They are.""
Eleanor stepped forward.
"We have formal notice requiring preservation of the relevant corporate records, and the court's property order is ready to be served.""
Daniel stared at her.
"You brought the police?""
"The officers are here to ensure there is no disturbance while the documents are served," Eleanor replied.
Martin moved toward the door.
"Nobody has the authority to search my property.""
Eleanor opened her folder.
"We aren't searching your property, Mr. Hale. We're preserving evidence under the applicable legal process.""
She handed the documents to the officers.
Then she looked at me.
"There's something else you need to know.""
I glanced at the two men.
"What?""
Eleanor lowered her voice.
"The original trust ledger has been located.""
My heart began beating faster.
"Where?""
"In your father's private storage vault.""
I stared at her.
"That vault was sealed after his death.""
"Exactly.""
"Who opened it?""
Eleanor looked down at her notes.
"Someone used your father's old access authorization last week.""
I felt cold spread through my arms.
"Who?""
She turned the page.
Then she looked at Daniel.
"Your husband.""
Daniel's face went completely blank.
Martin suddenly reached for his coat.
One of the officers stepped in front of him.
"Sir, please remain where you are.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
Eleanor placed another document on the coffee table.
"Mr. Whitmore, your access authorization was used to enter the vault. The security footage also shows someone accompanying you.""
I looked at the photograph attached to the report.
The image was grainy.
But the woman's face was unmistakable.
Vanessa.
She stared at the photograph.
Then she whispered something I would never forget.
"Daniel, you told me the ledger had been destroyed.""
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
And suddenly I understood.
The affair, the divorce papers, the suitcase, and the money transfers were not separate events.
They were all part of the same plan.
Daniel hadn't simply decided to leave his wife.
He had been trying to take something from my family.
Something my father had spent his final years protecting.
Eleanor closed the folder.
"Mara, we need to talk about what your father actually left you.""
I looked down at Lily.
Then back at the photograph.
"Tell me.""
Eleanor hesitated.
"Your father didn't just leave you the trust.""
She placed one final page on the table.
"He left you controlling authority over every company connected to it.""
I stared at the document.
Then I noticed the date.
The authority had become effective on the day Daniel and I got married.
And beneath it was a handwritten note from my father.
*If Daniel ever tries to take what belongs to you, show her the second ledger.*
I looked at Eleanor.
"Where is it?""
Her expression changed.
"That's the problem, Mara.""
May you like
She lowered her voice.
"The second ledger is missing.""
