Chapter 5

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I lay on the couch in the tiny apartment my mom and I shared.

Thinking about The Reaper.

About his daughter.

About Vincent.

And then I thought about something else.

The hospital bills.

$12,400.

The number was too specific. Too high.

My mom's social worker had told me the treatment should cost about half that.

I pulled out my phone and started digging.

Hospital records. Medicare rates. Cost reports.

And then I found it.

Buried in the fine print of the bill.

Administrative fees. Facility charges. "Specialty" services that were never performed.

The bill had been inflated.

Deliberately.

And the hospital administrator who signed off on it?

A man named Vincent Gallo.

The same man who ran the fighting ring.

I sat up straight.

It was a system.

Inflate the bills. Make people desperate. Force them to fight.

Bet on the fights. Make millions.

And control the doctors to make sure the "useful" fighters' families stayed alive.

The Reaper's daughter.

My mom.

May you like

All of them.

Pawns in Vincent's game.
