Chapter 7: The Marriage Clause

The document on my phone felt heavier than the folder in my hands.

Maybe because the folder belonged to the past.

But this document belonged to today.

Today.

The day I was supposed to promise Ethan my entire future.

Instead, I had unknowingly signed away something else.

I read the first paragraph again.

Then again.

Each time, the words became clearer.

*Temporary executive authority.*

*Financial access.*

*Decision-making rights.*

*Transfer of operational control.*

I knew those words.

I wasn't a lawyer, but I wasn't clueless either.

My father had spent his entire life building the company. After he died, lawyers had spent months explaining the complicated process of inheritance.

I remembered sitting in a conference room.

I remembered feeling overwhelmed.

I remembered Ethan holding my hand under the table.

"You don't have to understand every detail," he had whispered.

"That's why you have people who love you.""

People who love you.

The phrase echoed in my head.

Because now I understood the danger of letting someone else hold the details of your life.

They could rewrite the story while you were still living it.

I looked at Ethan.

"Did you know about this?""

His face tightened.

"Amelia—"

"Did you know about this?""

He didn't answer.

I nodded slowly.

"That's all I needed.""

"It's not what you think.""

"That's what everyone says right before it is exactly what I think.""

Jessamine looked between us.

"Ethan.""

He ignored her.

"Amelia, listen. You were overwhelmed after your accident.""

I froze.

There it was.

Again.

The accident.

The excuse.

The explanation for every secret.

"You keep bringing that up.""

"Because it's relevant.""

"Is it?""

"Yes.""

"Or because you know I can't remember everything?""

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A hesitation.

A calculation.

And suddenly I hated that I noticed it.

Because I used to notice things about Ethan because I loved him.

Now I noticed things because I was trying to survive him.

"You told me I was unstable.""

His silence answered.

"You told me I couldn't handle my own life.""

"Amelia—"

"You made me believe I needed you.""

"I was trying to help you.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You were trying to make yourself necessary.""

The room went quiet.

Jessamine looked away.

Because even she knew.

That was the truth.

Ethan took a step toward me.

"Do you really think I would do that to you?""

I stared at him.

No.

Maybe not.

This morning?

Absolutely not.

But now?

Now I didn't know who I was looking at.

"I think you know exactly what you would do.""

His face fell.

For the first time, I saw the impact of my words.

Good.

He needed to feel something.

Anything.

I left Jessamine's apartment before Ethan could say anything else.

He followed me into the hallway.

"Amelia, please.""

I kept walking.

"Please stop.""

I turned around.

"What do you want?""

He looked exhausted.

"I want to explain.""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because every explanation comes with another secret.""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I laughed quietly.

"Exactly.""

"Give me one chance.""

I stared at him.

"One chance?""

"Yes.""

"You had two years.""

That hurt him.

I saw it.

But I didn't care.

"You had two years to tell me the truth.""

"I was scared.""

"So was I.""

The hallway became silent.

I stepped closer.

"You know what the difference is?""

He looked at me.

"I was scared and still trusted you.""

His eyes dropped.

"You were scared and decided I was easier to control.""

"I never controlled you.""

I almost smiled.

"Really?""

I held up my phone.

"Because according to this, you were about to control my company.""

His face changed.

"That was temporary.""

"Why?""

"Because you needed protection.""

"From who?""

He didn't answer.

"From who, Ethan?""

Still nothing.

Then Jessamine appeared in the doorway.

"From you.""

We both looked at her.

"What?""

Her face was pale.

But she didn't look away.

"That's what he told everyone.""

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Jessamine, don't.""

"No.""

She stepped into the hallway.

"You don't get to pretend anymore.""

I looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

She swallowed.

"After your accident, Ethan convinced your family that you weren't ready to manage the company.""

My chest tightened.

"But why?""

"Because you were looking into the company.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Jessamine looked at Ethan.

"You found something.""

My eyes moved to him.

"What did I find?""

He said nothing.

"Tell me.""

Still nothing.

Jessamine answered.

"You found missing money.""

The hallway seemed to disappear.

"From my company?""

She nodded.

"Millions.""

I stared at Ethan.

"No.""

His face changed.

"Amelia—"

"You knew?""

"I knew there were financial issues.""

"You worked there.""

"I was trying to fix them.""

"You were involved.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

I stepped back.

The same words.

Always the same words.

Protect.

Help.

Confused.

Broken.

Different words.

Same weapon.

"How much?""

He looked away.

"How much money was missing?""

No answer.

I raised my voice.

"How much?""

Jessamine whispered:

"Seven million dollars.""

My breathing stopped.

Seven million.

A number too large to feel real.

My father built that company.

My father trusted people.

And after he was gone, someone started taking pieces of it.

"Was it you?""

Ethan looked at me.

"Amelia.""

"Was it you?""

"No.""

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

"I didn't steal from you.""

"Then who did?""

Silence.

I looked at Jessamine.

She looked at Ethan.

And I knew.

They both knew.

"You know.""

Neither spoke.

"You know who took the money.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"This is not the place.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"This is exactly the place.""

People were walking through the hallway now.

Neighbors.

Guests from the building.

Strangers noticing the scene.

I didn't care.

Let them watch.

For once, I wanted witnesses.

"I spent two years believing I was lucky.""

My voice cracked.

"I thought I had a loving fiancé. A loyal best friend. A family that protected me.""

I looked at Ethan.

"Do you know what you actually gave me?""

He stared at me.

"A life where everyone knew the truth except me.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan said something so quietly I almost missed it.

"I'm sorry.""

The apology came too late.

But it was the first honest thing he had said.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because I believed him.

He was sorry.

But he was still guilty.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

"Amelia Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Daniel Reeves. I'm the attorney who handled your father's estate.""

My grip tightened.

"Why are you calling me?""

There was a pause.

Then:

"Because I just reviewed the document you sent.""

I looked at Ethan.

He looked nervous.

The attorney continued.

"Ms. Carter, the signature on that agreement appears to be fraudulent.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"The signature is yours.""

I looked at my own hand.

"But the date...""

"Yes.""

He paused.

"The document was signed after your accident.""

The world went silent.

"That's impossible.""

"No.""

His voice became serious.

"It's not impossible.""

A chill moved through me.

"Someone used your condition to obtain control of your assets.""

I looked at Ethan.

He was watching me.

Like he already knew.

"Mr. Carter?""

I didn't answer.

The attorney continued.

"Amelia, there's something else.""

"What?""

"We found another document.""

"What document?""

His voice lowered.

"A marriage agreement.""

My blood ran cold.

"A what?""

"A document prepared before your wedding.""

I looked at Ethan.

The man I was supposed to marry.

"The agreement states that if you married Ethan Carter today...""

The attorney stopped.

"Then he would become the legal controller of the company permanently.""

I couldn't breathe.

Because suddenly the wedding wasn't about love.

It wasn't about forever.

It wasn't about two people starting a life together.

It was a transaction.

A beautiful dress.

A perfect venue.

A room full of flowers.

All hiding a contract.

"Where is the agreement?"" I whispered.

The attorney answered:

"It was submitted this morning.""

I closed my eyes.

"This morning?""

"Yes.""

A pause.

"By someone inside the wedding venue.""

I looked at Ethan.

His face had gone completely pale.

And then I realized something.

He wasn't afraid that I found out.

He was afraid of something else.

Something bigger.

Because the attorney's next words changed everything.

"Ms. Carter...""

"There is a problem.""

"What problem?""

"The person who submitted the agreement wasn't Ethan Carter.""

My heart pounded.

"Then who was it?""

The attorney hesitated.

May you like

Then said:

"The document was filed using Jessamine Vale's authorization.""
