Chapter 6: The Man Who Controlled the Story

The door opened slowly.

Not dramatically.

Not like in movies.

Just a quiet turn of the handle.

A small movement.

But my entire body reacted before my mind could.

My hands tightened.

My heart started racing.

Because some part of me — some hidden piece of myself buried two years ago — recognized danger before I did.

Ethan stepped inside.

His eyes found me immediately.

Not Jessamine.

Me.

And for a second, nobody spoke.

The man who was supposed to be waiting at the altar.

The man who had promised me forever.

The man whose name was still engraved inside my wedding ring.

He looked at me like I was something he had lost.

Not someone he had betrayed.

"Amelia.""

I hated how familiar his voice sounded.

I hated that my heart still reacted to it.

Because love doesn't disappear the second someone hurts you.

Sometimes it stays.

Sometimes it sits beside the pain and makes everything harder.

I stood there holding the photograph.

The one with Claire.

The one Jessamine had given me.

The one that had cracked open a version of my life I didn't know existed.

"What are you doing here?""

Ethan looked at Jessamine.

Then back at me.

"I came to stop this.""

I almost smiled.

"Stop what?""

"Stop you from believing things that aren't true.""

The sentence was so familiar that my stomach dropped.

Because it sounded exactly like something my mother had warned me about.

He was doing it again.

Not apologizing.

Not explaining.

Correcting.

"That's what you always say, isn't it?""

His expression changed.

"What?""

"You always make it sound like I'm confused.""

"Amelia—"

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"You don't get to use that word anymore.""

His jaw tightened.

"What word?""

"Confused.""

Silence.

Because I knew I had hit something.

A tiny reaction.

A crack.

Jessamine noticed too.

She looked away.

Ethan took a breath.

"Jessamine told you things.""

"Yes.""

"She's lying.""

Jessamine laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

"That's your first move?""

Ethan looked at her.

"Stay out of this.""

I stared at him.

"Interesting.""

He looked back at me.

"What?""

"You came into her apartment, but you're telling her to stay out of it.""

His face hardened.

"You don't understand what happened.""

"Then explain.""

"I will.""

"When?""

He stopped.

That hesitation.

Again.

The same hesitation that had answered every question before he ever spoke.

I held up the photograph.

"Why was Claire meeting you and Jessamine the night before my accident?""

Ethan went still.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

"You found that?""

"Answer me.""

He looked at Jessamine.

"Did you give her that?""

"She deserves to know.""

His eyes returned to me.

"No.""

I blinked.

"No?""

"No, she doesn't.""

The room became silent.

Even Jessamine looked shocked.

Because he had finally said it out loud.

He didn't want me to know.

Not because it would hurt me.

Because it would hurt him.

"Wow.""

I shook my head.

"At least you're honest about that.""

"Amelia, listen to me.""

"Why?""

"Because I love you.""

The words should have meant something.

Once, they would have.

Once, hearing Ethan say that would have made every fear disappear.

Now it sounded like a line from a script.

"Do you?""

His face softened.

"Yes.""

"Then why did you marry the lie?""

He looked down.

"I made mistakes.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Don't call it that.""

"What do you want me to call it?""

"Choice.""

He looked at me.

"You chose her.""

His silence answered.

"You chose to sleep with her.""

Silence.

"You chose to hide it.""

Silence.

"You chose to let me walk down that aisle thinking I was the only person in the world who mattered to you.""

His expression cracked.

"Amelia—"

"No.""

My voice shook.

"But the worst part?""

I looked at Jessamine.

Then back at him.

"The worst part is that I think this wasn't the first time you chose to hurt me.""

Ethan's face changed.

A flicker.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

And suddenly I knew.

There was more.

"Tell her.""

Jessamine's voice cut through the room.

Ethan looked at her.

"Don't.""

"Tell her what happened.""

"You don't get to decide that.""

"No.""

Jessamine stepped forward.

"You lost that right when you let her marry you.""

I watched them.

Really watched them.

Not as enemies.

As two people who knew something I didn't.

Two people carrying a secret that connected them.

"What happened the night before my accident?""

Neither answered.

I laughed.

"Of course.""

I walked toward the door.

"I'm done.""

Ethan moved.

"Wait.""

"No.""

"You need to hear this.""

I stopped.

Because I wanted to leave.

I truly did.

But some part of me — the part that had written those warnings — knew I couldn't.

"Fine.""

I turned around.

"Tell me.""

Ethan looked exhausted.

For the first time, he looked like the person I used to know.

Not the charming man.

Not the fiancé.

Just a man who was afraid.

"Two years ago, you found out about me and Jessamine.""

"I know.""

"You confronted us.""

"I know.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"You don't.""

He looked at the photograph.

"You confronted me first.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"You came home early.""

My stomach tightened.

"I was supposed to be out of town.""

"Yes.""

"I remember.""

"You saw messages.""

"Between you and Jessamine.""

"Yes.""

"Then what?""

Ethan looked at the floor.

"You packed a bag.""

My breath caught.

"I left?""

"Yes.""

"Why don't I remember?""

"Because later that night, you came back.""

"Why?""

He didn't answer.

"Why?""

His voice became quieter.

"Because you thought I was in danger.""

I froze.

"What?""

"You thought Jessamine was trying to hurt me.""

I looked at her.

She looked down.

"I don't understand.""

Ethan continued.

"You found something.""

"What?""

"A conversation.""

"Between who?""

He looked at Jessamine.

Then me.

"Between Jessamine and someone else.""

My heart started pounding.

"Who?""

Nobody answered.

I stepped closer.

"Who was she talking to?""

Jessamine whispered:

"Your father.""

I froze.

The room changed.

My father had been dead for five years.

There was no reason for his name to be here.

No reason.

"What?""

Jessamine's eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't know what he was involved in.""

"What are you talking about?""

Ethan looked at me.

"Amelia, your father wasn't who you thought he was.""

I felt anger rise instantly.

"Don't.""

"Please.""

"Don't bring my father into this.""

"He was part of it.""

"Part of what?""

Nobody answered.

I screamed:

"Part of what?""

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Then Jessamine said:

"The company.""

I frowned.

"What company?""

Ethan looked at me.

"The one you inherited.""

I stopped.

Because I suddenly remembered.

Barely.

A conversation.

A lawyer.

Documents.

Something after my father's death.

But it was blurry.

Missing pieces.

"You told me my father left debt.""

"He did.""

"Then why are you saying I inherited something?""

Ethan didn't answer.

And that was the answer.

My knees felt weak.

"What did I inherit?""

Jessamine whispered:

"A company.""

My mouth went dry.

"Which company?""

She looked at me.

"The company Ethan works for.""

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"No.""

He didn't deny it.

And that hurt more.

"You work for my company?""

He swallowed.

"Yes.""

"How long?""

"Since before we met.""

I stepped back.

Everything shifted.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every moment.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I was going to.""

"When?""

His eyes lowered.

"After the wedding.""

I laughed.

Again.

That horrible laugh.

"Of course.""

My phone buzzed.

Nobody moved.

I looked down.

A new message.

From my lawyer.

A name I didn't recognize.

*Ms. Carter, I received your emergency request. I have reviewed the documents you sent. There is something you need to know immediately.*

I opened the attachment.

One page.

One signature.

One date.

My blood went cold.

Because it wasn't a document from two years ago.

It was from today.

The wedding day.

And at the bottom was my signature.

Authorizing Ethan Carter to take temporary control of my entire company.

I looked at Ethan.

He looked at the phone in my hand.

And for the first time since I walked into that bridal room...

He looked terrified.

May you like

Because he knew I had found the one thing he had spent two years trying to keep hidden.

The reason he needed me to marry him.
