Chapter 9: The Person Nobody Suspected
I arrived at the police station expecting another nightmare.
I was wrong.
It was worse.
Because this time, the person waiting inside was someone I trusted.
Someone who had hugged me while I was crying.
Someone who had sat beside my hospital bed.
Someone who had told me I was not alone.
Emily.
My cousin.
Detective Reed watched my reaction.
“You didn’t know?””
I shook my head slowly.
“No.””
Emily sat across the room.
She looked ashamed.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just ashamed.
“Claire…”
I stopped her.
“Why?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t know what he was planning.””
“Who?””
She looked down.
“Michael.””
I felt numb.
“Explain.””
She took a breath.
“He contacted me before the wedding.””
“Why?””
“He said Lauren was struggling.””
That sounded believable.
Too believable.
“He told me he wanted to help her.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And you believed him?””
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
“I believed him because I wanted to help Lauren too.””
I looked away.
The pattern was becoming clear.
Everyone wanted to save Lauren.
And Michael used that.
“What did you do?””
Emily cried.
“I gave him information.””
My stomach dropped.
“What information?””
“About your family.””
Silence.
“What kind of information?””
“Things Lauren told me.””
I stared.
“You told him our private conversations?””
“I didn’t know who he was.””
“You knew he was Lauren’s fiancé.””
“I thought he loved her.””
That sentence hurt.
Because I realized how many people had believed the same thing.
“What information did he want?””
Emily swallowed.
“Your father’s schedule.””
I froze.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
But we both knew.
Detective Reed explained.
“Emily wasn’t involved in the chemical attack. She was manipulated into providing information.””
I looked at Emily.
“And now?””
“I’m sorry.””
The apology felt small.
But real.
For once, I didn’t know what to say.
Later, Detective Reed showed me the final evidence.
Michael’s messages.
His plan.
His words.
Everything.
He had studied my family for months.
He knew every insecurity.
Every argument.
Every weakness.
And then he built a story where everyone would destroy each other.
The wedding was just the beginning.
“He wanted your father dead,” Detective Reed said.
I nodded.
“And when that failed?””
“He adjusted.””
“How?””
“He decided to frame you.””
I looked at the documents.
My name appeared again and again.
Like he had already written my ending.
But he had made one mistake.
He underestimated how much people would eventually talk.
The trial began three months later.
I sat in the courtroom.
Lauren sat behind me.
Not beside me.
Not yet.
But behind me.
Michael entered wearing a suit.
Calm.
Confident.
Like a man who still believed he could charm his way out.
Then Hannah testified.
Then Emily.
Then Lauren.
When Lauren took the stand, the entire room became silent.
The prosecutor asked:
“Ms. Hayes, did you throw the chemical onto your sister?””
Lauren looked at me.
Then looked down.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
The prosecutor continued.
“Why?””
Lauren answered:
“Because I was angry.””
No excuses.
No lies.
Just the truth.
Then came Michael.
The prosecutor played the recording.
His own voice filled the courtroom.
“You’re sure nobody will notice?””
Silence.
Michael’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
The trial lasted six days.
On the final day, the judge prepared to announce the verdict.
I held my breath.
Guilty.
The word echoed through the courtroom.
Michael was convicted on multiple charges.
Lauren received a lesser sentence because of her cooperation and confession.
But before leaving the courtroom, she asked to speak with me.
I almost said no.
Almost.
Then I remembered something.
We were sisters.
Broken.
Damaged.
But sisters.
She stood in front of me.
“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””
I said nothing.
“But I want you to know something.””
“What?””
“I’m sorry I spent so many years trying to beat you.””
My eyes burned.
She continued.
“You were never my enemy.””
The tears came before I could stop them.
Because that was the truth neither of us wanted to admit.
The person I fought with my whole life was never really my sister.
It was the version of her that someone else had helped create.
As Lauren walked away, my phone buzzed.
A message from Detective Reed.
One final piece of evidence had been found.
May you like
Something Michael had hidden.
Something that explained why he chose my family.
