Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Glass

The woman called herself Hannah.

She was a temporary employee at the wedding venue.

She had been working the bar that night.

And she had been afraid to speak.

“I thought it was a mistake,” she said.

We met in a small coffee shop two days later.

I chose a table near the window.

Old habits.

I wanted an exit.

I wanted to see anyone approaching.

Hannah looked exhausted.

She kept twisting her coffee cup between her hands.

“I should have said something sooner.””

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked down.

“Because your sister scared me.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What did she say?””

Hannah swallowed.

“She told me not to interfere.””

“With what?””

“The drink.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Hannah took a breath.

“About an hour before the reception, Lauren came behind the bar.””

“That’s normal?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because brides don’t usually go behind the bar.””

I nodded.

“What happened next?””

“She asked me for a glass.””

“What kind?””

“A short glass.””

My heart started pounding.

“The same one?””

“Yes.””

Hannah looked at me.

“She told me it was for a surprise.””

“What surprise?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did she put something in it?””

Hannah hesitated.

Then nodded.

“I saw her add something.””

My hands went cold.

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you saw?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you stop her?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought it was some stupid wedding prank.””

I looked away.

Everyone thought that.

Everyone had trusted Lauren.

Everyone assumed cruelty was harmless when it came wrapped in a smile.

“Did she do anything else?””

Hannah reached into her bag.

She pulled out her phone.

“I recorded something.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“Not on purpose.””

She unlocked the screen.

“I was recording the band because my sister wanted to hear them.””

She pressed play.

The video showed the reception.

The camera angle was far away.

But the audio was clear.

Lauren’s voice.

“You’re sure nobody will notice?””

A man answered.

“They’ll think it’s a joke.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Hannah.

“Who is that?””

“I don’t know.””

The video continued.

Lauren laughed.

“She deserves it.””

I stopped breathing.

Then the man said:

“What if something goes wrong?””

Lauren replied:

“It won’t.””

I grabbed the phone.

“Play that again.””

Hannah did.

Again.

And again.

The voice was familiar.

Not familiar like a stranger.

Familiar like someone I had seen before.

Someone at the wedding.

Someone close.

I called Detective Reed immediately.

Within an hour, he was listening to the recording.

His expression changed.

“This is important evidence.””

“Who is the man?””

“We’re working on that.””

“Detective.””

He looked at me.

“Who?””

He was quiet.

Then he said:

“We believe it’s someone connected to Lauren.””

That night, I barely slept.

My mind replayed the wedding.

Every moment.

Every face.

Every conversation.

Then I remembered something.

Michael.

Lauren’s husband.

The man standing beside her when my father gave the toast.

The man who looked uncomfortable.

The man who left the room shortly before Lauren came to my table.

The next morning, Detective Reed called.

His voice was serious.

“Claire, we identified the second person in the recording.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Michael Hayes.””

I sat frozen.

“Lauren’s husband?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t speak.

The man who had smiled at me.

The man who hugged me.

The man who looked like the only person in my sister’s life who understood her.

Detective Reed continued.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“We found messages between Lauren and Michael.””

My hands trembled.

“What did they say?””

His answer changed everything.

“Claire, your sister wasn’t trying to humiliate you.””

I waited.

“She was trying to destroy you.””

May you like

And then he said the one thing I never expected.

“Because the drink wasn’t meant for you.””
