Chapter 5

I ran.

Through cold, dripping darkness. Toward the faint light at the end.

Behind me, I heard shouting. Then a gunshot.

My blood ran cold.

I stopped. Turned back.

I couldn't leave her. Not after she'd risked everything for me.

I pushed the door open just enough to see.

She stood between my brother and the kitchen entrance. Arms crossed. Blocking the way.

"Move," my brother said.

"She's gone," the waitress said. "And you'll never find her."

My brother raised his gun.

I stepped out from the shadows.

"Put it down," I said.

Three guns turned toward me.

My oldest friend. My captain. My brother.

"Walk away," I said. "All of you. And we forget this ever happened."

My brother laughed. Cold and sharp.

"We outnumber you," he said. "And she's the only one who knows the truth. Without her… you have nothing."

He raised his weapon.

Then—sirens.

May you like

Wailing loud and close. Pulling up outside.

The waitress had pressed a silent alarm.
