Chapter 3

The kitchen was hot and steamy. Empty.

I stepped inside. The waitress was already there, waiting by the walk-in freezer door.

"Who are you?" I asked, voice low.

She pulled off her cap. Dark hair fell loose.

"You saved my brother's life last winter," she said quickly. "In the hospital. No one else would help him. You paid the bills and walked away. I never forgot."

"And now?"

"And now they've been planning this for months," she said. "Your brother made the deal. Your friend gave the order. Your captain set the time. They were going to walk in here, shoot you in the back, and walk out like heroes."

She pulled a heavy steel key from her pocket.

"There's a service tunnel behind the freezer," she said. "It leads to the alley. A car is waiting."

I took the key.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Because not everyone forgets a good deed," she said. "Even when everyone else turns bad."
