Chapter 5: The Name on the Paper

Grant couldn't breathe.

The room felt smaller.

The walls seemed to move closer.

Lila stood behind him, holding Owen's hand.

She didn't understand the words.

But she understood fear.

"Evelyn," Grant said slowly, "what is this?""

The older woman smiled.

"Proof.""

"Proof of what?""

"That Fiona lied to you.""

Vanessa looked furious.

"Stop.""

Evelyn ignored her.

"Fiona built her entire life around protecting secrets.""

Grant picked up the document.

The name was blurred by age.

But the signature was clear.

Fiona Bellamy.

He looked at Vanessa.

"Is this real?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.

"Don't listen to her.""

"Then tell me.""

She couldn't.

That was enough.

Grant walked upstairs and put the children in the guest room.

Then he returned.

"You both knew.""

Vanessa whispered:

"I was trying to protect you.""

"No.""

His voice cracked.

"You were trying to own us.""

Evelyn laughed.

"You still don't see it.""

Grant turned.

"What?""

"Vanessa didn't marry you for the trust.""

A pause.

"She married you because Fiona left something else behind.""

Grant stared.

"What?""

Evelyn leaned closer.

"A confession.""

Vanessa shouted:

"Enough!""

Everyone turned.

The mask was gone.

No more perfect wife.

No more calm smile.

Only rage.

"You ruined everything!""

Grant stepped back.

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

Toward the children.

"I spent months trying to find that box.""

Grant's voice was cold.

"Why?""

"Because Fiona knew the truth.""

"What truth?""

Vanessa laughed through tears.

"The truth that she destroyed my family.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Lila appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Daddy.""

Grant turned.

She held something in her hand.

A small folded note.

"I found this inside the box.""

Grant walked toward her.

"What is it?""

Lila handed it over.

He opened it.

Only one sentence was written.

His hands began shaking.

Because it wasn't from Fiona.

It wasn't from Vanessa.

It wasn't from Evelyn.

It was from someone whose name he never expected to see.

The note said:

Grant, if you are reading this, I am still alive.

May you like

And beneath it was a signature.

Fiona Bellamy.
