Chapter 4: The Truth in the Recording
Grant barely slept.
He sat beside Lila's bedroom door until sunrise.
Every sound in the house made him look up.
At 6:14 a.m., he received another message.
This time, there was a video file.
He opened it.
The footage showed Fiona.
Alive.
Sitting in their kitchen.
Speaking directly to the camera.
"If you are watching this, something happened.""
Grant covered his mouth.
Fiona continued.
"I need you to listen carefully. Vanessa is not who she says she is.""
The video shook slightly.
Fiona looked terrified.
"She came into our lives because she knew about the trust.""
Grant watched as his wife, the woman he had loved, revealed the truth from beyond the grave.
"I tried to warn Grant, but Vanessa convinced him I was becoming unstable.""
Grant closed his eyes.
He remembered.
The arguments.
The accusations.
The way Vanessa had always been there to comfort him afterward.
She had planted the idea.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Fiona's voice continued.
"Grant, I need you to know something.""
She leaned closer to the camera.
"Lila was never supposed to find the box.""
Grant froze.
"Someone helped her.""
The video ended.
A single name appeared in the final frame.
Evelyn Harper.
Grant recognized it.
Vanessa's mother.
That afternoon, he confronted Vanessa.
"Your mother helped Fiona.""
Vanessa's face went blank.
"What did you say?""
Grant placed the phone on the table.
The video played.
Vanessa watched.
For the first time, she looked truly afraid.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
She sat down.
"My mother hated Fiona.""
"Why?""
"Because Fiona knew things.""
"What things?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Things about my family.""
Before Grant could ask more, someone knocked on the door.
A woman stood outside.
Older.
Elegant.
Cold eyes.
Vanessa whispered:
"Mom.""
Evelyn Harper stepped inside.
She looked at Grant.
Then smiled.
"You finally found the box.""
Grant felt his stomach drop.
Because she wasn't surprised.
She was relieved.
Evelyn reached into her purse and placed a document on the table.
A birth certificate.
With Lila's name.
And a signature Grant had never seen before.
"This is why Fiona was afraid," Evelyn said.
Grant stared at the paper.
Then at Vanessa.
"Who is Lila's biological father?""

Vanessa said nothing.
And that silence was the answer.
