Chapter 9: The Final Trap
Rachel disappeared before we could reach her.
That was how we knew she was involved.
People who had nothing to hide usually stayed.
People with secrets ran.
For two days, Vanessa and Rachel vanished.
But they made one mistake.
They underestimated Lily.
My little sister found the thing everyone else missed.
A calendar.
Hidden in Vanessa’s old office.
“What is this?”” my father asked.
Lily pointed.
“She wrote things down.””
Inside were dates.
Appointments.
Meetings.
And one date circled in red.
My eighteenth birthday.
I stared at it.
“She planned everything around that day.””
My father nodded.
“She needed control of the account.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Vanessa’s voice came through.
“You finally understand.””
I stood.
“Where are you?””
She laughed.
“You still think this is about location.””
“What do you want?””
“I want what was always mine.””
“It was never yours.””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Your mother said the same thing.””
My heart stopped.
“You knew she found out.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married Dad?””
“I had to.””
The casual way she said it made me sick.
My father grabbed the phone.
“Vanessa.””
She went quiet.
“Marcus.””
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then she said:
“Because you were easier to manipulate than I expected.””
My father closed his eyes.
“You never loved me.””
“No.””
The honesty was worse than any lie.
“I loved what you could give me.””
The call ended.
But she had made one mistake.
She stayed on long enough for the police to trace the location.
An abandoned office building.
We arrived twenty minutes later.
Vanessa was there.
So was Rachel.
They looked cornered.
But Vanessa still smiled.
“You brought everyone.””
My father stepped forward.
“You destroyed my family.””
She shrugged.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“She did.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Vanessa frowned.
“You still don’t understand.””
“I understand everything.””
She laughed.
“You’re sixteen.””
“And you’re scared.””
That made her stop.
Because it was true.
For years, Vanessa had controlled everyone because everyone was afraid.
But now?
She had nothing left.
Rachel looked nervous.
“Vanessa, this is over.””
Vanessa turned.
“Quiet.””
Rachel stepped back.
And that was when we saw it.
The argument.
The fear.
The betrayal.
Vanessa had controlled Rachel too.
The police entered.
Vanessa finally stopped smiling.
The evidence was enough.
The recordings.
The documents.
The financial records.
The attempted manipulation.
Everything.
As she was taken away, she looked at me.
“You think you won?””
I held her stare.
“Yes.””
She smiled sadly.
“You’ll see.””
But I didn’t look away.
May you like
Because for the first time in years…
I believed myself.
