Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Rachel answered the door like she had been expecting us.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not the house.

Not the neighborhood.

Her expression.

She looked scared before she even saw who was standing there.

My father stood beside me.

“Rachel?””

She froze.

Then she looked at me.

“Maya.””

The way she said my name made my skin crawl.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it sounded like she had been waiting years to say it.

“You know who I am.””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Rachel looked away.

“Because your mother talked about you.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew my mom?””

She opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

The house smelled like old books and coffee.

Everything about it felt quiet.

Hidden.

Like someone had spent years trying not to be noticed.

Rachel sat across from us.

“I wondered when this day would come.””

My father leaned forward.

“What day?””

“The day you discovered the truth.””

I looked at her.

“What truth?””

She sighed.

“The truth about Vanessa.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“You knew?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Because I was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone was afraid.

My whole life had been controlled by people being afraid.

“My mother was afraid too, wasn’t she?””

Rachel nodded.

“She was.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked at the table.

“Because Vanessa wasn’t interested in your father.””

My father went still.

“What?””

“She was interested in what your father had.””

The room became silent.

“Money?”” I asked.

Rachel nodded.

“Money. Property. Security.””

My father shook his head.

“She loved me.””

Rachel looked at him sadly.

“Marcus, she studied you.””

The words hurt him.

Because some part of him already knew.

Rachel continued.

“Your wife was intelligent. She knew exactly what people needed to hear.””

I thought about Vanessa.

The perfect smile.

The perfect words.

The perfect victim.

“How did my mom find out?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because I told her.””

My father stood.

“You told her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I felt guilty.””

“For what?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because I helped Vanessa.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“How?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“When Vanessa first met Marcus, she asked me questions.””

“What questions?””

“About his life. His finances. His family.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And you answered?””

“I thought she was just curious.””

“You thought?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I was wrong.””

My father sat back down.

“What happened after that?””

Rachel walked to a cabinet.

She removed a small envelope.

“She left this with me.””

My heart stopped.

“What is it?””

Rachel handed it to me.

“Your mother’s.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a flash drive.

A second copy.

I looked at Rachel.

“My mom knew.””

“She knew Vanessa might destroy evidence.””

My father whispered:

“She planned for this.””

Rachel nodded.

“She told me if anything happened, I had to wait until Maya was old enough.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because your mother didn’t want you carrying this burden as a child.””

The words almost broke me.

Because even after death, my mother was still protecting me.

We took the flash drive home.

The computer loaded slowly.

Then a video appeared.

My mother’s face filled the screen.

I stopped breathing.

I had not seen her move.

Had not heard her voice clearly in years.

“Maya,” she said.

And I broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just silently.

Because hearing my mother say my name felt like finding a piece of myself I thought was gone forever.

The video continued.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.””

My father covered his mouth.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus, I need you to listen carefully.””

The screen flickered.

Then she said:

“Vanessa knows about the inheritance.””

My father looked shocked.

“What inheritance?””

The video continued.

“When my parents passed away, they left money for Maya.””

I froze.

“What?””

My father stared at the screen.

“There was an account?””

My mother nodded in the video.

“It was protected until Maya turned eighteen.””

My hands went cold.

Vanessa.

The insurance.

The documents.

The guardianship papers.

Everything suddenly connected.

My mother continued.

“Vanessa doesn’t want custody because she loves Maya.””

The video paused.

Then my mother said the sentence that changed everything.

“She wants control of what belongs to my daughter.””

Nobody moved.

Then the video ended.

But before the screen went black, one final image appeared.

A document.

Signed by Vanessa.

And underneath it…

A second signature.

My father recognized it immediately.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the screen.

“That signature…”

May you like

His voice shook.

“It’s mine.””
