Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Handwriting
I stared at the message until the words blurred.
*Start with the person who knows your handwriting best.*
My fingers went cold.
Because there were only a few people in the world who knew my handwriting well enough to copy it.
My mother.
My sister.
My closest friends.
And someone else.
Someone who had spent years watching me sign cards, write notes, fill out forms, and leave reminders around the house.
Someone who had access to my personal things.
My husband.
The room was silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“What are you thinking?””
I didn’t answer.
Because for the first time that night, I was afraid of the answer.
Not because I didn’t want the truth.
Because I was starting to understand how much of my life had been happening without me.
Rachel looked between us.
“Sarah, you need to tell us what that message says.””
I locked my phone.
“No.””
Daniel frowned.
“No?””
“I don’t want anyone else guessing.””
My eyes stayed on him.
“I want answers.””
He looked hurt.
“From me?””
“Yes.””
The word came out immediately.
Because it was true.
I didn’t need another explanation from Linda.
I didn’t need another surprise from Rachel.
I needed to know why the person who promised to stand beside me had spent months standing somewhere else.
“Did you ever give my information to anyone?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Did you ever let your mother access my documents?””
He hesitated.
And that hesitation was enough.
“Daniel.””
He looked down.
“Only some.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
“Insurance information. Appointment schedules.””
“Appointment schedules?””
He nodded.
“My mom wanted to help.””
I laughed quietly.
There it was again.
Help.
That word had become an excuse for everything.
“She knew when I had appointments?””
“Yes.””
“And you thought that was okay?””
“I didn’t think it was a big deal.””
I stared at him.
“That’s the problem.””
I touched my stomach.
“This baby isn’t a project everyone gets to manage.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you’re learning.””
The words were harsh.
But they were true.
For months, I had been trying to convince him.
Tonight was the first time he was actually listening.
Linda suddenly spoke.
“You’re making Daniel look like a villain.””
I turned toward her.
“He’s making his own choices.””
Her expression tightened.
“You don’t understand how much pressure men have.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“Pressure?””
“Yes.””
She pointed toward Daniel.
“He has responsibilities.””
I looked at her.
“And what about mine?””
The question stopped her.
“I’m the one whose body is changing.””
I stepped closer.
“I’m the one who feels every kick.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m the one who has been carrying this child while everyone else has been planning around me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue with that.
Rachel cleared her throat.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at her.
She opened the folder again.
“I didn’t want to say this before, but now I think you need to know.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She pulled out another document.
“This DNA test request wasn’t approved.””
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“The hospital flagged it.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Because prenatal DNA requests require specific authorization.””
She turned the paper.
“And this one had a signature that didn’t match the authorization requirements.””
I looked at the page.
Another signature.
Another fake.
“Then why was it processed?””
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“Because someone inside the system pushed it through.””
My eyes widened.
“Someone helped.””
She nodded.
The room became colder.
This wasn’t just a family problem anymore.
Someone had crossed professional lines.
Someone had gone out of their way.
Daniel ran his hand through his hair.
“Who?””
Rachel looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
A notification came from my phone.
Everyone looked.
A new message.
This time, there was a name attached.
Not unknown.
A saved contact.
I stared.
My heart started pounding.
Because the message came from someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
*I’m sorry you had to find out this way.*
I looked at the sender.
My blood turned cold.
Claire.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t answer.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because she’s trying to create chaos.””
I stared.
“Is she?””
He didn’t respond.
I opened the message.
There was another one underneath.
*I should have told you years ago.*
My breath caught.
Another message appeared.
*Linda knew about the documents. She asked me to help because she said you were unstable and would never agree.*
I looked up.
Straight at Linda.
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Daniel saw it too.
“Mom?””
Linda shook her head.
“She’s lying.””
Claire’s next message arrived.
*Ask Linda about the envelope she kept in her bedroom drawer.*
My eyes moved to Linda.
“What envelope?””
She looked away.
That was all I needed.
Daniel stepped back.
“Mom.””
Linda’s voice became defensive.
“This is ridiculous.””
“What envelope?”” I repeated.
She looked at me.
“You’re letting a stranger manipulate you.””
“A stranger who knows things you know.””
Linda’s jaw tightened.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom.””
For once, he wasn’t asking me to calm down.
He wasn’t asking me to forgive.
He was asking her.
“What envelope?””
Linda didn’t answer.
And then my father spoke.
“Enough.””
Everyone looked at him.
He walked toward Linda.
“You’ve spent years making people uncomfortable because you knew nobody would challenge you.””
Linda stared at him.
“You don’t know anything about my family.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
Then he looked at me.
“But I know my daughter.””
His voice softened.
“And I know when she’s been lied to.””
I felt tears form.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
But because for the first time that night, I didn’t feel alone.
Daniel looked at me.
“Sarah, I need to tell you something.””
I didn’t move.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“When my mom told me about the DNA test…”
My heart stopped.
“You knew?””
His face changed.
“I knew she was asking questions.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He looked away.
“I knew she wanted to confirm something.””
The room went silent.
I felt numb.
“You knew.””
“I didn’t know she actually did it.””
“But you knew she was trying.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I nodded slowly.
The pain was almost quiet now.
That was the worst part.
“I think that’s the part that hurts the most.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“That you keep saying you didn’t know enough to stop it.””
My voice trembled.
“But you always knew enough to let it happen.””
Daniel looked like I had hit him.
Because I had.
With the truth.
Rachel suddenly gasped.
Everyone turned.
She was looking at her phone.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I found something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at Linda.
“The person who accessed Sarah’s records…”
A pause.
“The login came from this house.””
Nobody breathed.
Daniel whispered:
“What?””
Rachel turned the screen around.
A location record.
A timestamp.
A device.
And the name attached to it.
Not Linda.
Not Claire.
Not Daniel.
Mine.
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel shook her head.
“I know.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Sarah, what does that mean?””
I looked at the screen.
At my own name.
My own account.
My own identity being used again.
Then I remembered something.
Something small.
Something I had ignored.
A missing notebook.
A missing folder.
A week when Daniel said he had cleaned up the home office.
A week when Linda visited while I was at work.
And suddenly, I understood.
Someone didn’t just know my handwriting.
Someone had been collecting pieces of me.
My documents.
My passwords.
My life.
I looked toward the hallway.
Toward the office.
And for the first time that night, I wasn’t scared of what we would find.
I was scared of who had already been there.
May you like
Because the next place we needed to look…
Was the one room in the house where Daniel told me nobody ever went.
