Chapter 6: The Test Nobody Asked For

The room didn’t just go quiet.

It went still.

Like every person inside had forgotten how to move.

A DNA test.

Before my daughter was even born.

The words didn’t make sense at first.

My brain rejected them.

Because there was no reason.

No reason for anyone to question something that should have been built on trust.

I looked at Rachel.

“The baby’s DNA?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“Why?””

Rachel looked down.

“I don’t know everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

She flinched.

And immediately, I felt bad.

Not because I was wrong to be angry.

Because I was angry at the wrong person.

Rachel looked like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Daniel stood up.

“Rachel, you need to leave.””

Every head turned toward him.

I stared.

“Excuse me?””

He looked nervous.

Not protective.

Not angry.

Scared.

“Sarah, this isn’t the place.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“Not the place?””

I pointed around the room.

“Your mother humiliated me here.””

I pointed at the folder.

“Someone forged my signature here.””

I pointed at my stomach.

“And now I find out someone ordered a DNA test for our unborn daughter.””

My voice broke.

“And you’re worried about the place?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Good.

Because there was nothing he could say.

Rachel held the folder tighter.

“I should explain.””

Linda suddenly stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Rachel froze.

Linda’s face was pale.

“Not here.””

I turned toward her.

“You know.””

It wasn’t a question.

Linda looked away.

And that was all the confirmation I needed.

My heart started pounding.

“Linda.””

She said nothing.

“You know about the test.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom?””

Linda’s expression changed.

Like she had been caught in a lie she wasn’t prepared to tell.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

I felt something inside me snap.

“Protect?””

I laughed quietly.

“That word means something very different to you than it does to me.””

Rachel looked between us.

“You didn’t know?””

I stared at her.

“Know what?””

She swallowed.

“Linda requested the test.””

The room erupted.

Not loudly.

But with the sound of people realizing something terrible.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father stepped forward.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom.””

Linda lifted her chin.

“I had questions.””

Questions.

That word.

A small word.

A harmless word.

People used it when they wanted to make cruelty sound reasonable.

I stared at her.

“Questions about what?””

She looked at me.

And for once, she didn’t pretend.

“I needed to know.””

“Know what?””

Her eyes moved to my stomach.

“That the baby was really Daniel’s.””

The pain that hit me was so sudden I almost forgot to breathe.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody knew how.

Because there was no gentle way to hear that.

No polite version.

My mother stepped forward.

“How dare you.””

Linda looked at her.

“I’m a mother.””

“No.””

My mother’s voice was shaking.

“You’re a woman who has spent months accusing my daughter of things because you wanted control.””

Linda ignored her.

She looked at Daniel.

“I was protecting you.””

Daniel looked destroyed.

“You thought Sarah was cheating?””

Linda hesitated.

That hesitation hurt him.

I could see it.

Because somewhere in that moment, Daniel realized his mother’s behavior wasn’t random.

It came from somewhere ugly.

A belief.

A suspicion.

A story she created.

“Why?”” he asked.

Linda looked at me.

“Because she changed.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“When she got pregnant.””

I stared.

“That makes no sense.””

Linda stepped closer.

“You became secretive.””

I almost laughed.

“Secretive?””

“You stopped sharing everything.””

I looked at Daniel.

Because there it was.

The twisted version of the truth.

I hadn’t become secretive.

I had become exhausted.

I had become careful.

Because every piece of happiness I shared became something Linda could criticize.

“You mean I stopped telling you every detail because every detail became an opportunity for you to judge me.””

Linda shook her head.

“You’re avoiding the point.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“The point is you decided I was guilty of something because I stopped letting you control me.””

Rachel quietly interrupted.

“The test wasn’t authorized by Sarah.””

Everyone looked at her.

I turned.

“What?””

Rachel opened the folder.

“The request came through an outside service.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who submitted it?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then looked at Daniel.

And I felt the room change again.

“No.””

Daniel whispered.

Rachel looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

“Daniel.””

His face was pale.

“I didn’t submit it.””

Rachel nodded.

“He didn’t.””

I stopped.

Then who?

Rachel flipped through the papers.

“The request was attached to a family account.””

Linda looked nervous.

“Family account?””

Rachel nodded.

“The account listed multiple authorized users.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at the page.

Then said:

“Daniel Miller.””

A pause.

“Linda Miller.””

Another pause.

“And one other person.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

Rachel looked directly at me.

“The name listed was Sarah Miller.””

My breath caught.

My own name.

Again.

A signature.

Again.

My identity being used.

I whispered:

“Someone is pretending to be me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel slowly looked toward me.

And I hated the question forming on his face before he even asked it.

“Sarah…”

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Is there anyone who could have access to your personal information?””

I stared at him.

The question hurt.

Because it sounded like suspicion.

Like maybe, for one tiny second, he wondered if I had done this.

I shook my head.

“You’re asking me that?””

“No, I’m just trying to understand.””

“Understand?””

My eyes filled.

“You still don’t get it.””

He looked confused.

“Get what?””

“That someone has been making choices about my baby.””

My voice lowered.

“And instead of asking who hurt me, everyone keeps asking how I let it happen.””

Daniel looked away.

Because he knew.

He knew I was right.

A phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t Daniel’s.

It was Rachel’s.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

I watched her expression.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

The phone rang again.

She slowly turned the screen toward me.

A blocked number.

Then a message appeared.

*Stop digging. You don’t know what you’re going to uncover.*

My heart raced.

Rachel looked terrified.

“Who sent that?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Another message came in.

This time, there was no warning.

No threat.

Just four words.

*Ask Daniel about Claire.*

Daniel froze.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

Like someone had just called him by a name he was afraid to hear.

I looked at him.

“Who is Claire?””

His face went completely blank.

And that was when I knew.

Whatever secret had been hiding behind my pregnancy…

May you like

Wasn’t just about his mother.

It was about him.
