Chapter 4: The Secret Appointment
“I told you eventually she would find out.””
Linda’s words didn’t sound like a confession.
They sounded like she was annoyed that a secret had become inconvenient.
The room felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
Everyone looked from Linda to Daniel, waiting for one of them to explain.
But neither of them spoke.
And that silence told me more than any argument could.
I held my phone tightly in my hand.
“Explain.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
Daniel knew that tone.
It was the tone I used when I was done begging for honesty.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Not another ‘Sarah, listen.’ Not another ‘Sarah, it’s complicated.’ Explain.””
Daniel looked toward the floor.
Linda sighed.
“This is getting ridiculous.””
I turned to her.
“You changed my baby’s emergency contact information.””
She lifted her chin.
“I was helping.””
“Helping?””
“Yes.””
She looked around the room like everyone should understand.
“You’re eight months pregnant. Anything could happen.””
My stomach twisted.
“And your solution was to remove my husband?””
Linda’s expression hardened.
“Daniel works all day.””
“So?””
“So I’m available.””
The answer came so easily.
Like she had already decided.
Like she had already placed herself in a role that belonged to someone else.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know?””
His silence lasted only a second.
But it was enough.
“You knew.””
“I found out recently.””
“When?””
He rubbed his hands together.
“Last week.””
A painful laugh escaped me.
“Last week.””
I repeated the words.
“Your mother changed something important about our child, and you found out last week.””
“Sarah, I was going to talk to you.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
I nodded.
“Exactly.””
The room was quiet.
Nobody interrupted.
Not even Linda.
Because for once, she didn’t have an easy excuse.
My father stepped forward.
“Daniel, why would your mother even have access to change hospital information?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“She helped us with some paperwork.””
I froze.
“Some paperwork?””
My voice dropped.
“What paperwork?””
He looked at me.
Then away.
And that movement told me there was another piece.
Another thing I didn’t know.
I felt my daughter move inside me.
A tiny kick.
A reminder.
A reminder that all of this wasn’t just about me anymore.
Every decision being made affected someone who couldn’t speak for herself.
“Tell me.””
Daniel took a breath.
“After your appointment last month…”
“What appointment?””
He stopped.
And immediately, my heart sank.
Because there was only one appointment I hadn’t told him about.
The one I went to alone.
Not because I wanted to hide things.
Because I wanted peace.
A normal moment.
Just me and my baby.
I stared at him.
“How do you know about that?””
Linda looked away.
And there it was.
The answer.
I turned slowly.
“You told him.””
Linda shrugged.
“You needed support.””
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“I needed privacy.””
She frowned.
“Why would you need privacy from your husband?””
I looked at Daniel.
Because that was the question.
The one I had been avoiding.
Why had I started keeping things from him?
Because somewhere along the way, I stopped feeling safe sharing my feelings.
I stopped believing my pain would be protected.
I stopped believing my husband would choose me.
“I went to the appointment alone because I wanted one day where my pregnancy wasn’t a debate.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I swallowed.
“Every time I talked about our daughter, someone had an opinion.””
My eyes moved toward Linda.
“Your mother wanted a grandson.””
Then back to Daniel.
“And you wanted everyone to stay happy.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Daniel looked like he wanted to deny it.
But he couldn’t.
Linda crossed her arms.
“You’re blaming Daniel because I care about this baby?””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I’m blaming you because you think caring means controlling.””
Nobody spoke.
Linda stepped closer.
“You have no idea what I’ve done for this family.””
I smiled sadly.
“You’re right.””
She stopped.
“Because apparently, while I was carrying my child, you were making decisions about her without me.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“Mom, why did you change the contact?””
Linda looked at him.
And for the first time, she seemed offended.
“Because I thought I could trust you.””
The sentence confused everyone.
“Trust me with what?””
She looked at him.
“With protecting this family.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Linda didn’t answer.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom.””
She shook her head.
“You know exactly what I mean.””
“No, I don’t.””
“Yes, you do.””
The two of them stared at each other.
And suddenly, I realized something.
There was a conversation happening between them.
One I wasn’t part of.
One with history.
One with secrets.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“What is she talking about?””
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Again.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
My chest tightened.
“Daniel.””
“I didn’t want to upset you.””
I laughed quietly.
“You keep saying things like that.””
“What?””
“That you didn’t want to upset me.””
I stepped closer.
“But somehow everything you do hurts me anyway.””
He looked away.
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Not because I was weak.
Because I was exhausted.
Exhausted from discovering my own life in pieces.
Linda suddenly spoke.
“Maybe you should tell her.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“She deserves to know.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
And I knew whatever came next was going to change something.
“Before we found out the baby was a girl…”
He paused.
I waited.
“We had a conversation.””
“With who?””
He looked at his mother.
“With my mom.””
I nodded slowly.
“About?””
He swallowed.
“About what would happen if something went wrong during delivery.””
My heart started pounding.
“That’s normal.””
“Yes.””
“Then why are you acting like this?””
“Because…”
He looked down.
“Because my mom asked me what I wanted.””
I frowned.
“What you wanted?””
“If there was an emergency.””
The room went quiet.
I felt my hands go cold.
“What emergency?””
Daniel’s voice became barely audible.
“She asked me who should make decisions if you couldn’t.””
My breathing stopped.
“And what did you say?””
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
I just needed him to say it.
“Daniel.””
His eyes met mine.
“I said my mom.””
The pain was immediate.
Sharp.
Deep.
Like someone had reached into my chest and squeezed.
“You chose her?””
“No.””
“You chose her.””
“I was scared.””
“So was I.””
My voice broke.
“I was the one carrying this baby.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I wiped my cheek.
“You don’t know what it feels like to realize the person who promised to protect you has been planning around you.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I love you.””
I shook my head.
“Love isn’t just saying the right words when everything falls apart.””
The room was silent.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
I looked down.
This time, there was a picture attached.
My blood turned cold.
It was a photo of a document.
A hospital authorization form.
And at the bottom…
A signature.
My signature.
Except I had never signed it.
I zoomed in.
Everyone watched my face change.
Daniel noticed.
“What is it?””
I looked up.
My voice barely worked.
“Someone forged my name.””
Linda’s expression changed.
For the first time all night…
She looked scared.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because if Linda wasn’t the person who sent the message…
Then someone else had been watching.
May you like
Someone else knew.
And whoever it was wanted me to find out the truth.
