Chapter 9: The Girl Brenda Chose

The truth came out slowly.

Painfully.

Like pulling glass from a wound.

Brenda hadn’t discovered Lily at the sleepover.

She had discovered her months earlier.

She had been watching.

Watching families.

Watching routines.

Watching children.

Detective Hill found hidden cameras near the neighborhood.

Not inside homes.

Outside.

Near parks.

Near schools.

Places where children played.

Brenda had built a system.

A horrifying system.

And Lily had been one of her targets.

I sat across from Brenda during the final interview.

I didn’t know why Detective Hill allowed it.

Maybe because he knew I needed answers.

Maybe because he knew Brenda wanted to talk.

She smiled when she saw me.

“Your niece is special.””

My hands tightened.

“Don’t talk about her.””

“She remembers.””

“Remembers what?””

Brenda leaned back.

“The first night.””

I stared at her.

“What first night?””

She smiled.

“The night she met Chloe.””

My blood froze.

“What?””

Brenda watched my reaction carefully.

“She saw her.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

She tilted her head.

“Ask Lily.””

I left immediately.

I found Lily sitting with Chloe.

The two girls were drawing together.

Two victims.

Two different ages.

But connected.

“Lily.””

She looked up.

“Can I ask you something?””

She nodded.

“Did you know Chloe before the sleepover?””

Her pencil stopped.

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

“When?””

Lily looked at Chloe.

“Last year.””

My heart broke.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because Mrs. Cole said Chloe would get hurt.””

Chloe looked down.

“She always said that.””

I sat beside them.

“What happened?””

Lily swallowed.

“She brought me there once.””

“Once?””

“For a tour.””

Rachel looked horrified.

“A tour?””

Lily nodded.

“She showed me the rooms.””

“Why?””

“She said she wanted me to help.””

“Help with what?””

Lily looked at me.

“To become Chloe.””

Nobody moved.

The pieces finally connected.

The shoes.

The name.

The sleeping bags.

The replacement.

Brenda wasn’t trying to erase Lily.

She was trying to create another Chloe.

Because in her mind, Chloe had never disappeared.

She had simply become unfinished.

Brenda was arrested.

The charges were endless.

Kidnapping.

Abuse.

Fraud.

Years of crimes hidden behind a perfect suburban smile.

Thomas Cole testified.

Chloe testified.

Even some of the other girls came forward.

The world finally heard their stories.

But the question that haunted me was this:

Why did Brenda choose Lily?

I got the answer months later.

A letter arrived.

No return address.

No name.

Just a single envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Lily at age seven.

Standing outside a school.

On the back was handwriting.

*She smiled like Chloe.*

I felt sick.

But underneath the photo was another note.

A note Brenda had written years earlier.

*The first child who reminds me of Chloe will bring her back.*

I stared at those words.

Then I noticed something else.

A second photograph.

Not of Lily.

Of another girl.

A girl I didn’t recognize.

May you like

On the back were three words.

*Subject number eight.*
