Chapter 6: The Girl Behind the Name

The words on the paper followed me long after Detective Hill took it away.

*Chloe is coming home.*

Four words.

Four words that turned a missing child’s story into something alive again.

I sat in the police station under fluorescent lights that made everyone look exhausted. Lily was curled up beside Rachel, wrapped in a blanket someone had given her. She looked smaller than she had that morning.

Too small.

Like the world had suddenly become too dangerous for someone her age.

Detective Hill returned nearly an hour later.

His face told me he had found something.

Not everything.

But something.

“We searched Brenda Cole’s house,” he said.

Rachel stood immediately.

“And?””

He looked at Lily first.

Then lowered his voice.

“We found a hidden room.””

The air disappeared from the room.

“A hidden room?”” I repeated.

“Yes.””

“What was inside?””

Detective Hill hesitated.

That hesitation was worse than any answer.

“Photographs.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

“How many?””

“Hundreds.””

Lily started shaking.

I moved closer.

“Hey. Look at me.””

She looked up.

“You’re safe.””

But even as I said it, I wasn’t sure.

Because someone had spent years hiding things.

Someone had spent years controlling the story.

And now that story was breaking apart.

Detective Hill sat across from us.

“Daniel, I need to ask Lily something. Carefully.””

I nodded.

He turned toward her.

“Lily, do you remember seeing that hidden room?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

Her eyes moved toward the floor.

Then she whispered:

“I saw the door.””

Everyone went quiet.

“What door?”” I asked.

“The one behind the bookshelf.””

Detective Hill leaned forward.

“When?””

“After dinner.””

“What happened?””

Lily rubbed her thumb against the blanket.

“Mrs. Cole got a phone call.””

“From who?””

“The man.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you hear?””

“She said, ‘I found the replacement.’”

Rachel gasped.

Detective Hill’s expression changed.

“Replacement?””

Lily nodded.

“She said Chloe was almost ready.””

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

“Ready for what?””

Lily didn’t answer.

She was crying now.

“I don’t know.””

Rachel pulled her closer.

Detective Hill looked at me.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“This isn’t just about a missing girl anymore.””

I stared at him.

“Then what is it?””

He looked down at the folder in his hand.

“It appears Brenda Cole has been collecting information on children for years.””

My fists tightened.

“Collecting?””

“Names. Families. Personal details.””

“Why?””

“We don’t know.””

A phone rang.

Detective Hill answered.

His face changed within seconds.

“Where?””

He listened.

Then stood.

“Keep everyone inside.””

He hung up.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He looked at Lily.

“Someone was just found outside Brenda Cole’s house.””

“Who?””

Detective Hill hesitated.

“A girl.””

Rachel stood.

“What girl?””

He looked at me.

“She says her name is Chloe.””

The police rushed us back to the station’s secured area.

Nobody explained anything.

That was the worst part.

The silence.

The unanswered questions.

Lily watched every officer who walked past.

Then suddenly she grabbed my hand.

“Uncle Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“She’s not Chloe.””

I froze.

“What?””

The little girl looked terrified.

“The girl they found.””

“How do you know?””

“Because Chloe was in the room.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“What room?””

“The hidden room.””

I knelt beside her.

“Lily, what are you saying?””

She looked around before whispering.

“Mrs. Cole showed us pictures.””

“What pictures?””

“Of girls who disappeared.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

Lily continued.

“She told us Chloe was special.””

“Why?””

“She said Chloe was the first one.””

My skin crawled.

“The first one?””

Lily nodded.

“She said every girl after Chloe was practice.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Detective Hill returned.

“Daniel.””

I stood.

“What’s happening?””

His face was pale.

“The girl outside Brenda’s house gave us a name.””

“Chloe?””

“No.””

He looked toward the interview room.

“She says her name is Lily.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at my niece.

She looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly the question wasn’t why Lily had stopped answering to her own name.

May you like

The question was…

who had been pretending to be her?
