Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
Marcus couldn’t move.
For several seconds, he wondered if he had heard Vanessa correctly.
“My father?””
The words felt impossible.
His father had been dead for seven years.
A heart attack.
That was the story.
A funeral.
A grave.
A goodbye.
A memory.
“You’re lying.””
Vanessa didn’t react.
That scared him.
If she had become angry, he could have argued.
If she had defended herself, he could have challenged her.
But she only looked tired.
Like she had been waiting for this moment for years.
“I wish I was.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Don’t.””
His voice became colder.
“Do not use my father to distract me from what you did.””
“I’m not.””
“Then explain.””
Vanessa looked toward the children.
Caleb and Nia were standing at the bottom of the stairs, listening.
Marcus noticed.
“Kids, go to the living room.””
Neither moved.
“Now.””
The seriousness in his voice made them obey.
Once they were gone, Marcus turned back.
“My father died.””
Vanessa nodded.
“The man you buried did.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
“What does that mean?””
She took a breath.
“Your father was involved with Ryan.””
Marcus laughed once.
A sharp, humorless sound.
“No.””
“He was.””
“My father hated Ryan.””
“He pretended to.””
Marcus stared at her.
Every memory he had of his father suddenly felt unstable.
His father, Richard Hale.
A strict man.
A complicated man.
A man who believed emotions were weaknesses.
But a criminal?
No.
Never.
“You’re saying my father helped Ryan?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Not at first.””
“Then when?””
“After he realized Ryan could hurt the family.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if you know your father.””
The words hit harder than he expected.
Because they were true.
Richard Hale had always believed protecting the family meant making decisions for everyone else.
Even if nobody agreed.
Even if people got hurt.
“What happened?””
Vanessa walked toward the kitchen table.
She sat down.
“Your father found out Ryan was in trouble.””
“What kind of trouble?””
“Debt. Threats. People demanding money.””
Marcus remembered Ryan disappearing.
The excuses.
The silence.
The sudden move away.
“He helped him.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Ryan was family.””
Marcus looked away.
The hypocrisy made him sick.
“He helped Ryan while pretending he was protecting us.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus leaned against the counter.
“Then what happened the night of the accident?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Your father was there.””
The room became silent.
“He was at the vacation house?””
“Yes.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“He arrived after Ryan called him.””
“Why would Ryan call my father?””
“Because Ryan needed someone to fix his mistake.””
Marcus felt cold.
“What mistake?””
Vanessa looked down.
“He hurt someone.””
Marcus waited.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
And Marcus knew.
Whatever the answer was, it mattered.
“Vanessa.””
Her voice was quiet.
“Your father.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“The real victim that night was your father.””
The words made no sense.
“My father was dead.””
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s what everyone believed.””
Marcus stared.
“Explain.””
She looked toward the basement.
“The accident wasn’t just about Ryan and Nia.””
She paused.
“It started because your father found out Ryan was stealing from him.””
Marcus frowned.
“Stealing?””
“Money.””
“How much?””
“Enough that your father threatened to expose him.””
Marcus thought about the video.
The argument.
The rain.
The shouting.
“Ryan attacked him.””
Vanessa nodded.
“And Nia saw.””
Marcus felt sick.
“What happened to my father?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Ryan thought he killed him.””
The room went silent.
“But he didn’t.””
Marcus stared.
“Then who did?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“That’s the question I’ve spent six years trying to answer.””
Marcus felt frustration building.
“You knew my father might be alive?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I didn’t know where he was.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed toward the basement.
“You had files. Cameras. Letters. Secrets everywhere.””
His voice broke.
“And you expect me to believe you didn’t know?””
Vanessa looked hurt.
“I knew he survived.””
Marcus stopped.
The admission was quiet.
But devastating.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because I saw him.””
“When?””
“The night after the accident.””
Marcus stared.
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
He went silent.
“What?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I saw your father walking out.””
Marcus couldn’t breathe.
His father.
Alive.
Walking.
Leaving.
While Marcus was grieving.
“You let me bury him.””
“I thought he was dead.””
“But you just said you saw him.””
“I saw him leaving.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I didn’t know if he was alive or if I was imagining things.””
Marcus looked away.
Nothing made sense.
The man who raised him.
The wife he loved.
The children he wanted to protect.
Everyone had been carrying secrets.
Everyone had been afraid.
“Why would my father fake his death?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because someone was trying to kill him.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
A sound came from behind them.
A small voice.
“I do.””
Marcus turned.
Nia stood in the doorway.
His heart dropped.
“Nia.””
She looked terrified.
But she stepped forward.
“I know who.””
Marcus walked toward her.
“Sweetheart, you shouldn’t be listening.””
“I heard everything.””
He knelt.
“Who tried to hurt Grandpa?””
Nia looked at Vanessa.
Then at Marcus.
“The person in the red car.””
Marcus felt cold.
“The person you saw?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Do you know who it was?””
Nia hesitated.
Then slowly said:
“Yes.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus barely whispered:
“Who?””
Nia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know at first.””
She looked down.
“But I saw the ring.””
Marcus remembered.
The silver ring.
The one from the video.
The one that wasn’t Ryan’s.
“Whose ring was it?””
Nia’s voice shook.
“Grandpa’s.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
She nodded.
“The person who was there had Grandpa’s ring.””
Silence.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She looked equally shocked.
“That’s impossible.””
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“I saw it.””
Marcus felt a chill.
A ring.
A symbol.
A clue.
Someone had worn his father’s ring that night.
Someone had wanted them to believe Richard Hale was involved.
Someone had wanted the truth buried.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A figure stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
Holding a cane.
Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.
Because the man standing there was impossible.
The same face.
Older.
Changed.
But alive.
His father.
Richard Hale.
“Marcus.””
His voice was weak.
But real.
Marcus couldn’t speak.
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Then at Nia.
Then back at his son.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus finally found his voice.
“How?””
Richard stepped inside.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
Marcus stared.
“You let me think you were dead.””
Richard lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A long silence.
Then Richard said:
“Because the person who tried to kill me…”
He looked toward the dark hallway.
“…was someone you would never suspect.””
Marcus felt his heart pounding.
“Who?””
Richard’s face tightened.
May you like
And the answer that followed shattered the last piece of trust Marcus had left.
“Your mother.””
