Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed
Marcus stood in the kitchen long after the call ended.
The phone was still pressed against his ear.
The line was dead.
But he could still hear the words.
*Your daughter saw someone kill a person that night.*
He looked at Nia.
His twelve-year-old daughter stood across from him, clutching her stuffed rabbit against her chest.
She had no idea.
Or maybe she did.
Maybe she had known the truth for years.
Maybe she had been carrying something so heavy that it changed the way she looked at the world.
Marcus slowly lowered his phone.
“Nia.””
She looked up.
“Who did you see?””
Her face immediately changed.
Fear.
Pure fear.
Marcus felt his heart break.
Because children should not look afraid when their father asks them a question.
They should feel safe.
They should run toward him.
They should know he would protect them.
But Nia looked like she was deciding whether telling him the truth would make everything worse.
“I don’t remember everything.””
Marcus walked closer.
“That’s okay.””
“No.””
Her voice was small.
“It’s not.””
“Nia—”
“Mom said I wasn’t supposed to remember.””
Marcus froze.
Behind him, footsteps sounded.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
“No.””
Her voice was sharp.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa looked at Nia.
“Go upstairs.””
Nia immediately moved.
Marcus stepped in front of her.
“She stays.””
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“This is not appropriate.””
“She is the reason we’re having this conversation.””
“She’s a child.””
Marcus stared at her.
“And whose fault is it that she’s been carrying adult secrets?””
The words hit.
Vanessa looked away.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Nia whispered:
“Dad…”
Marcus turned toward her.
“Tell me.””
She swallowed.
“I saw someone.””
The room went completely silent.
“Who?””
Nia squeezed the rabbit tighter.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus softened his voice.
“What did they look like?””
“I don’t know.””
“Anything you remember.””
She closed her eyes.
And for a few seconds, she wasn’t twelve anymore.
She was six.
She was back there.
“I remember rain.””
Marcus felt cold.
The same rain as last night.
“I remember hiding.””
“Where?””
“In the car.””
Marcus frowned.
“The car?””
Nia nodded.
“I was supposed to be asleep.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Nia, stop.””
Marcus turned.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Let her talk.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I’m finally doing something.””
Nia continued.
“Mom told me to stay quiet.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
Nia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she said if I made noise, he would find us.””
Marcus’s breathing slowed.
“He?””
Nia nodded.
“I heard yelling.””
Her voice shook.
“Then I heard something break.””
She covered her ears.
“I don’t like remembering.””
Marcus immediately moved toward her.
“You don’t have to force yourself.””
But Nia grabbed his hand.
“No, Dad.””
She looked up.
“I need to tell you.””
Marcus sat beside her.
“Okay.””
“I saw Mom.””
His stomach tightened.
“You saw Mom?””
Nia nodded.
“She was crying.””
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
For the first time, his wife looked completely defeated.
“She was standing outside.””
Nia’s voice became quieter.
“There was someone else.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Man or woman?””
“Man.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“What happened next?””
Nia looked down.
“He fell.””
Silence.
“He fell?””
Nia nodded.
“Then Mom told me to close my eyes.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because she was trying to protect her.””
Marcus turned.
“You knew?””
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“Yes.””
The confession was quiet.
But it changed everything.
“You knew what she saw.””
Vanessa nodded.
Marcus stepped back.
“You let me believe she fell from a tree.””
“I was scared.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked him.
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“I lied because I thought it was the only way.””
“The only way to do what?””
“To keep her alive.””
Marcus stared.
The anger inside him mixed with confusion.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
Then back at him.
“The person she saw that night knew she was there.””
Marcus went still.
“Who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Because someone else did.
A voice came from the hallway.
“Me.””
Everyone turned.
Caleb stood there.
His face was pale.
Marcus looked confused.
“What?””
Caleb stepped into the room.
“I know who it was.””
The silence that followed felt endless.
Marcus stared at his son.
“You know?””
Caleb nodded.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“Then what do you know?””
Caleb looked at Vanessa.
“She told me not to say anything.””
Marcus felt anger rising.
“Caleb.””
“I was scared.””
The boy’s voice cracked.
“She said if people found out, they’d take Nia away.””
Marcus softened slightly.
“Tell me.””
Caleb looked down.
“It was Uncle Ryan.””
Marcus froze.
The name meant nothing.
Then everything.
Ryan.
Vanessa’s younger brother.
A man who had disappeared from their lives six years earlier.
Marcus remembered.
The family gatherings.
The jokes.
The way Ryan always acted like Nia was his favorite niece.
But after the accident…
He was gone.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Your brother?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Ryan was dangerous.””
Marcus laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“And you thought keeping me away was safer?””
“I thought I could handle it.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You thought you could handle someone who hurt our daughter?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I thought I caused it.””
The words stopped him.
“What?””
She sat down.
For the first time, Vanessa looked fragile.
“Ryan had problems.””
“What kind?””
“He was obsessed with proving himself. He wanted money. He wanted control.””
Marcus listened.
“Six years ago, he found out about a property my father left me.””
Marcus frowned.
“What property?””
“A vacation house.””
The same one.
The one where Nia’s accident happened.
“He wanted me to sell it.””
“And you refused.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“We argued.””
“When?””
“The night of the accident.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“He came there?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was angry.””
“And Nia saw?””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Nia.
The girl was crying silently.
“Why did you cover for him?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because he threatened us.””
“How?””
“He told me if I went to the police, he would tell them I was responsible.””
Marcus frowned.
“For what?””
Vanessa looked up.
And her next words made him understand why she had been so afraid.
“The person Ryan pushed…”
She swallowed.
“Wasn’t dead when he left.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“I found him.””
The room went silent.
“I found him after Ryan ran.””
“Who was it?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
“The person who could have exposed him.””
Marcus waited.
Then she said the name.
“Elaine Parker.””
Everything stopped.
Dr. Elaine Parker.
The woman who had just called him.
The woman who had supposedly been helping them.
Marcus felt his mind racing.
“But she’s alive.””
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s why I was terrified.””
“Why?””
“Because she knows the truth.””
Marcus looked at his phone.
The call.
The warning.
The accusation.
Something didn’t make sense.
If Elaine knew the truth…
Why was she telling him to distrust Vanessa?
And why had Vanessa been hiding the truth for six years?
Before Marcus could ask another question, the front door suddenly slammed.
Everyone jumped.
Marcus moved immediately.
“Stay here.””
He walked toward the entrance.
The door was locked.
But something had been pushed underneath it.
A small envelope.
He picked it up.
No name.
No address.
Just a message.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
His hands went cold.
It was Ryan.
Standing outside their house.
Taken yesterday.
Below the picture were six words:
*He knows you found out.*
Marcus looked toward the window.
The street outside was empty.
But someone had been watching.
Then his phone buzzed.
A new message.
From the same unknown number.
*Ask Vanessa why Ryan disappeared after the accident.*
Marcus looked back at his wife.
She was crying.
And for the first time, he realized something terrifying.
Vanessa had not only been hiding a secret.
She had been hiding the reason someone was willing to come back after six years.
May you like
And whoever Ryan was running from…
Was still out there.
