Chapter 7: The Boy In The Shadows

Marcus stopped breathing.

The video continued playing.

The image was dark.

Distorted by rain.

But the person walking through the driveway was unmistakable.

A young boy.

A boy Marcus recognized.

A boy standing beside him in the living room.

Caleb.

“No.””

The word escaped Marcus’s mouth before he could stop it.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Caleb looked like all the blood had drained from his face.

“That’s not…”

His voice disappeared.

Marcus looked at his son.

Then back at the video.

The timestamp showed the date.

Six years earlier.

Caleb was eight years old.

A child.

Not a teenager.

Not an adult.

Eight.

The figure in the video moved toward the side of the vacation house.

Then the screen froze.

Ryan’s message appeared.

*Now you know.*

Marcus looked at the phone.

His hands were shaking.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

“Caleb.””

The boy stepped back.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Marcus stared at him.

The words were automatic.

Defensive.

The same words someone said when they were afraid.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Marcus lowered the phone.

“Then explain why you’re in that video.””

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

That one glance told Marcus everything.

There was history between them.

A secret they shared.

“Caleb.””

The boy’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was there.””

The room went silent.

Marcus felt the world shift.

“You were there?””

Caleb nodded slowly.

“But I didn’t hurt anyone.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

“Of what would happen if you knew.””

Marcus felt anger rise.

“You all keep saying that.””

His voice cracked.

“Everyone keeps saying they were scared.””

He looked around the room.

“But nobody was scared enough to tell me the truth.””

Nia suddenly spoke.

“Dad.””

Marcus turned.

She was crying.

“Don’t be angry at Caleb.””

He froze.

“What?””

“He helped me.””

Marcus stared.

“What do you mean?””

Nia looked at her brother.

Caleb looked away.

“He helped me hide.””

Marcus’s confusion grew.

“Hide from who?””

Nia whispered:

“Uncle Ryan.””

The room went quiet.

Marcus looked at Caleb.

“Tell me.””

Caleb wiped his eyes.

“I found Nia near the house that night.””

“Why were you there?””

“I woke up.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Caleb swallowed.

“I heard Mom and Ryan arguing.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“You were awake?””

“Yes.””

“What did you hear?””

Caleb looked down.

“Ryan was yelling.””

“About what?””

“The property. Money. Mom refusing to sign something.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She nodded faintly.

“Then what?””

Caleb continued.

“I saw Nia leave the house.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

“She was scared.””

“Because of Ryan?””

“Yes.””

Caleb’s voice became quieter.

“She thought Mom was hurt.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What happened next?””

Caleb looked at the floor.

“I followed her.””

The video.

The child walking through the rain.

Now Marcus understood.

“You followed your sister.””

Caleb nodded.

“I didn’t know what else to do.””

“What happened when you got there?””

Caleb closed his eyes.

“I saw Ryan.””

Marcus waited.

“And?””

“He grabbed Nia.””

Marcus felt his fists tighten.

“What?””

“He told her she didn’t see anything.””

Nia started crying.

Marcus immediately moved toward her.

But she shook her head.

“I’m okay.””

She wasn’t.

She was twelve years old, trying to convince her father she could survive memories no child should have.

“What did you do, Caleb?””

Caleb looked ashamed.

“I hit him.””

Marcus froze.

“You were eight.””

“I know.””

“You hit Ryan?””

“I pushed him.””

The room went silent.

Caleb’s voice cracked.

“He was holding Nia’s arm.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

A faint mark.

A bruise.

A memory.

Something everyone had forgotten except the children.

“What happened after you pushed him?””

Caleb swallowed.

“He fell.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Where?””

“Near the stairs.””

The same stairs.

The same accident.

The same story Vanessa had changed.

“Then why did you run?””

Caleb’s face collapsed.

“Because Ryan got back up.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“He wasn’t unconscious.””

The room went silent.

Caleb continued.

“He looked at me.””

His voice trembled.

“He said he knew who I was.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

“And then?””

“He walked toward us.””

Nia whispered:

“Caleb grabbed my hand.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“He told me to run.””

Caleb nodded.

“We hid.””

“Where?””

“In the woods.””

Marcus stared.

“You were there all night?””

“Yes.””

“Both of you?””

“Yes.””

The pieces started connecting.

The rain.

The fear.

The missing hours.

The letters.

The lies.

But one thing didn’t make sense.

“Why did Vanessa say Nia fell?””

Caleb looked at his mother.

Vanessa answered.

“Because when I found them…”

Her voice broke.

“I saw Ryan leaving.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“I didn’t know Caleb had pushed him.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because Ryan was injured.””

Marcus stared.

“You protected him.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharp.

“I protected Caleb.””

The room went quiet.

Marcus understood.

A mother protecting her child.

But the cost had been another child’s silence.

“Why didn’t you tell me Caleb saved her?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Because Ryan knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Caleb was involved.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“And?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“He threatened to blame Caleb.””

Silence.

“He said he would tell the police that Caleb attacked him.””

Marcus looked at Caleb.

His son had lived with that fear for six years.

Thinking he had almost destroyed the family.

“You should have told me.””

Caleb looked away.

“I know.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“No.””

His voice softened.

“You should have trusted me.””

Caleb’s eyes filled.

“I thought you’d hate me.””

Marcus immediately pulled him into a hug.

The boy broke.

Years of fear finally coming out.

“I could never hate you.””

Marcus held him tightly.

But when he looked up again, his eyes went back to Vanessa.

Because there was still something missing.

“Why did Ryan send this video?””

Nobody answered.

Then Nia whispered:

“Because he wants us to think Caleb hurt him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Nia wiped her face.

“He always changes the story.””

Marcus froze.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Mom said never to tell.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Nia…”

“No.””

The girl shook her head.

“I’m tired of being scared.””

Marcus’s chest tightened.

“Tell me.””

Nia took a breath.

“Uncle Ryan didn’t fall because Caleb pushed him.””

Everyone stared.

“What?””

“He fell because…”

She looked toward the window.

Like she was seeing that night again.

“Because someone else was there.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Who?””

Nia’s lips trembled.

“I don’t know.””

“Look at me.””

She did.

“Who was there?””

The girl whispered:

“Someone standing behind Uncle Ryan.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“Another person?””

Nia nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you see their face?””

“No.””

“Anything?””

Nia thought.

Then suddenly her expression changed.

“I remember their hands.””

Marcus frowned.

“Their hands?””

“Yes.””

She looked terrified.

“They were wearing a ring.””

“What kind of ring?””

Nia closed her eyes.

“A silver ring.””

Marcus glanced at Vanessa.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“You know that ring.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She slowly looked at him.

Then whispered:

“Yes.””

“Whose is it?””

Her voice barely came out.

“Ryan’s.””

Marcus froze.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Vanessa looked toward the video still frozen on the phone.

Then she said:

“Because Ryan wasn’t alone that night.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at the image again.

The figure walking in the rain.

The person he thought was Caleb.

But now he noticed something.

The figure was taller.

Older.

The camera angle had been misleading.

Someone had wanted him to believe it was his son.

Marcus zoomed in.

The figure’s hand appeared on the screen.

A silver ring.

His blood turned cold.

Because it wasn’t Caleb.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been in their house all along.

Someone whose secret was bigger than Vanessa’s.

Marcus looked at the family standing around him.

And then his phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Ryan.

*You finally understand.*

Another message appeared.

*Your wife didn’t protect Nia from me.*

Marcus stared.

May you like

The final message arrived.

*She protected Nia from someone much closer.*
