Chapter 8: The Truth About Lily
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
For a moment, I thought I had heard him wrong.
I wanted to believe I had.
Because some sentences are so cruel, your mind refuses to accept them.
But David’s voice was still there.
Calm.
Steady.
Like he wasn’t destroying my entire understanding of my life.
“What did you say?””
My father stepped closer.
“Emily?””
I held up my hand.
I couldn’t look away from Daniel.
He looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
“David,” I said into the phone, “what are you talking about?””
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
Not a happy laugh.
A confident one.
“The same thing you’ve been avoiding all night.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Where are you?””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“Yes, it does.””
“No, Emily.””
His voice became colder.
“What matters is that you finally know the truth.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel shook his head immediately.
“No.””
But his face told me something else.
Not that he knew.
That he feared it.
David continued.
“Daniel was never supposed to be your husband forever.””
My chest tightened.
“Stop.””
“He was supposed to get close to you.””
“Stop.””
“He was supposed to become part of your family.””
My father moved toward the phone.
“David.””
The voice paused.
“Michael.””
The way he said my father’s name was unsettling.
Like they weren’t brothers.
Like they were enemies.
“You always thought you were smarter than me.””
My father’s face hardened.
“This ends tonight.””
David laughed softly.
“No.””
Then the line went dead.
I stood there frozen.
The office felt silent again.
But this silence was different.
Before, silence meant secrets.
Now, it meant danger.
Daniel moved toward me.
“Emily.””
I stepped back.
He stopped immediately.
That hurt.
Because I could see the realization in his eyes.
He finally understood that even though I knew he had lied…
he was still the person I was most afraid of hearing from.
“Did you know about Lily?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I swear.””
“Did David ever talk about her?””
“No.””
“Did he ever mention a child?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
I searched his face.
For a lie.
For anything.
I found pain.
But pain wasn’t proof.
My father took the phone from my hand.
“We need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because we don’t know what David has planned.””
I looked toward the door.
Then upstairs.
Toward my daughter.
The little girl who had stood between me and her father.
The little girl who had called for help because she was scared.
And now someone was saying she had been part of a plan before she was even born.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“But we need to know.””
My father looked at me.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I spent years letting everyone else decide what I could handle.””
I looked at Daniel.
“My father.””
Then back at my father.
“I’m done.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew I was right.
We left the office twenty minutes later.
The drive home was silent.
But this time, nobody was avoiding the truth.
We were all trapped inside it.
When we arrived, Lily was awake.
She was sitting on the couch wrapped in a blanket.
The moment she saw me, she ran over.
“Mom!””
I caught her.
She hugged me tightly.
And I held her like I could protect her from everything.
From secrets.
From lies.
From people who wanted to use her.
“Are you okay?”” I whispered.
She nodded.
Then looked behind me.
At Daniel.
“Daddy?””
Daniel looked at her.
His eyes filled.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
She walked over slowly.
“Are you leaving?””
The question broke him.
He crouched down.
“No.””
“Promise?””
He looked at me.
Then back at her.
“I promise I’m not leaving you.””
Lily studied him.
Then hugged him.
And I hated that my heart softened.
Because he was still her father.
And despite everything…
she still loved him.
Later, after Lily finally fell asleep, my father and I sat at the kitchen table.
Daniel stood near the window.
Nobody knew what to say.
Finally, I asked:
“What does David want with Lily?””
My father looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“Yes, you do.””
He sighed.
“Not everything.””
“Dad.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“There are things about our family history you never knew.””
I laughed quietly.
“Apparently, there are a lot.””
He looked at me.
“Your uncle always believed family was power.””
“What does that mean?””
“He thought blood connections could be used.””
“For what?””
My father hesitated.
“Control.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“Lily is his niece.””
“No.””
My father’s voice was quiet.
“She isn’t.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked over.
My father stared at him.
Then at me.
“David believed children were the strongest connection between families.””
I felt sick.
“Dad.””
“There is something you need to understand.””
He opened the notebook again.
The page with my name.
The page with the dates.
“He wasn’t interested in Lily because she was his family.””
I stared.
“Then why?””
My father’s voice lowered.
“Because of her birth certificate.””
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
“What about it?””
My father looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked confused.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
My father turned another page.
There was a copy of a document.
An old hospital record.
My hands shook before I even touched it.
“No.””
I looked at the date.
The hospital.
The day Lily was born.
Then I saw something.
A line that made my entire body freeze.
*Father’s information: amended.*
I looked at Daniel.
“What is this?””
He stepped closer.
“I don’t know.””
My father looked at him.
“You need to tell her.””
“Tell her what?””
My father pointed to the document.
“Why Lily’s birth records were changed.””
Daniel stared.
“I never changed anything.””
“Then who did?””
Nobody answered.
The house suddenly felt too quiet.
Then the front door opened.
All three of us turned.
My heart stopped.
A woman stepped inside.
Older than I expected.
Tired.
Carrying a folder.
Rachel.
She looked directly at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I stood.
“Sorry for what?””
Her eyes moved to Daniel.
Then to my father.
Then back to me.
“For waiting this long.””
She placed the folder on the table.
“There’s something you need to see.””
I didn’t move.
“What is it?””
Rachel opened the folder.
Inside was a DNA test.
My breathing stopped.
Daniel stared.
My father grabbed the edge of the table.
Rachel looked at me.
“David wasn’t trying to take Lily from you.””
My voice shook.
“Then what was he trying to do?””
Rachel swallowed.
“He was trying to prove Daniel was never Lily’s father.””
The room went completely silent.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked like he had just been punched.
“No.””
Rachel pushed the document forward.
“I know this is hard.””
I couldn’t look away.
The paper.
The results.
The truth.
Then Rachel said the words that shattered the last piece of my world.
“Emily…”
She paused.
“The man you married may not be Lily’s biological father.””
I looked at Daniel.
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
May you like
I wondered if the biggest lie wasn’t about why he married me.
It was about who my daughter belonged to.
