Chapter 7: The Marriage That Started With a Lie

I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.

The words on the page kept repeating in my mind.

*She was the reason Daniel was chosen.*

Not loved.

Not found.

Chosen.

A person wasn’t chosen for a marriage.

A person was chosen for a plan.

And suddenly, twelve years of memories felt like pieces of a puzzle someone else had put together.

The first date.

The first kiss.

The proposal.

The wedding.

The birth of Lily.

Every moment I thought was ours suddenly had a shadow behind it.

I looked at Daniel.

“Say it again.””

His face was pale.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Say it clearly.””

My father stepped between us.

“Daniel, you need to answer her.””

Daniel looked at the notebook.

Then at me.

“I was told to get close to you.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

I stepped back.

“By who?””

Silence.

That silence was becoming his answer.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

“David.””

My father looked like the air had been knocked out of him.

“My brother.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“You married me because my uncle told you to?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I mean…”

He ran his hand through his hair.

“It started that way.””

That was somehow worse.

Because it meant there was a part of the truth he still hadn’t told me.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I didn’t expect to fall in love with you.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it sounded like something from a movie.

A terrible movie where the person you trusted most revealed they had been lying since the beginning.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s true.””

I looked away.

My father picked up the notebook again.

“Explain everything.””

Daniel swallowed.

“When David helped me with my debts, he didn’t do it because he wanted to save me.””

He looked at the floor.

“He wanted something.””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Access.””

The word made my stomach tighten.

“Access to what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“To your family.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father whispered:

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

My father grabbed the edge of the desk.

“Why?””

“Because of the company.””

My father’s face changed.

I looked between them.

“What company?””

Daniel turned to me.

“Your father’s company.””

I frowned.

“Daniel, I don’t understand.””

He sighed.

“Your father built everything. The contracts. The clients. The accounts.””

My father stared at him.

“David wanted control.””

Daniel nodded.

“He believed the only way to get it was through the family.””

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re saying he used me?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My father closed the notebook.

“That’s enough.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I need to know.””

My father’s expression broke.

“Sweetheart.””

“I need to know.””

He looked away.

And I realized something.

My father knew more than he had admitted.

Again.

“What else?””

He stayed quiet.

“Dad.””

His shoulders lowered.

“David believed marrying into the family would give him influence.””

My chest tightened.

“But why Daniel?””

Daniel answered.

“Because I was desperate.””

The honesty was painful.

“David knew I needed money. He knew I had no power. He thought I would do anything.””

I looked at him.

“Did you?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.

“At first.””

The room became silent.

“At first?””

He nodded.

“I agreed to meet you.””

My breathing slowed.

“You knew who I was?””

“Yes.””

“You knew my family?””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father?””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“And I was just…”

I couldn’t finish.

Daniel’s voice softened.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You were never just anything.””

“Then what was I?””

He stepped closer.

“The first thing in my life that wasn’t a transaction.””

I looked away.

Because part of me hated that sentence.

And another part of me wanted to believe it.

“After I met you,” he continued, “everything changed.””

I laughed quietly.

“Except you never told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if you knew how we met, you’d leave.””

I stared at him.

“You were right.””

The words hurt him.

Good.

They were supposed to.

My father looked at Daniel.

“Did you ever tell David you changed your mind?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Three months after meeting Emily.””

My father narrowed his eyes.

“And what happened?””

Daniel looked at the notebook.

“David threatened me.””

“With what?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“With Emily.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

“He told me if I walked away, he would destroy your father.””

My father’s face hardened.

“He couldn’t.””

“He could.””

Daniel pointed at the documents.

“Because he had copies.””

I looked down at the papers.

The secrets.

The hidden accounts.

The evidence.

Everything.

David had been collecting insurance.

“If I left,” Daniel continued, “he would release everything.””

My father looked furious.

“So you stayed?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“You stayed because you were afraid.””

“Yes.””

“And then what?””

His eyes met mine.

“Then I fell in love with you.””

The room was quiet.

A part of me wanted to scream.

A part of me wanted to ask why he didn’t trust me.

Why he didn’t tell me.

Why he let me build my entire life on a lie.

Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.

“Did you ever love me?””

Daniel didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.””

His answer was immediate.

“I loved you before we got married.””

I looked at him.

“But you married me because of a plan.””

He nodded.

“At first.””

“And after?””

“After, I couldn’t imagine my life without you.””

My eyes burned.

Because that was the cruelest part.

Maybe he was telling the truth.

Maybe the love had become real.

But a real feeling built on a false beginning was still a painful thing to carry.

My father suddenly grabbed the notebook.

“Wait.””

We both looked at him.

He turned several pages.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“There’s something else.””

My heart sank.

“What now?””

He showed us the page.

A list of dates.

Names.

Events.

Then one sentence at the bottom.

*Phase Two begins after the birth of the child.*

I felt frozen.

The child.

Lily.

Daniel looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

My father stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel shook his head.

“David never told me about this.””

I looked at the page.

My daughter’s name wasn’t written.

But it didn’t need to be.

The meaning was clear.

“Phase Two?””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“What was supposed to happen after Lily was born?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I stared at the screen.

My father reached for my hand.

“Don’t answer.””

But I needed answers.

I picked up.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

Not Rachel.

Not someone I knew.

A voice that sounded older.

Calm.

Confident.

“Emily Carter.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is David.””

My uncle.

The man whose name had been hidden in every secret.

The man who had disappeared years ago.

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

He ignored the question.

Instead, he said:

“I heard you found the notebook.””

I couldn’t speak.

Then David continued.

“And now you’re probably wondering why Daniel was sent to you.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone white.

David’s voice lowered.

“Emily, there’s something your husband never told you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

A pause.

Then the words came.

“The plan was never to control your father’s company.””

I felt cold.

“Then what was it?””

May you like

David answered:

“It was to make sure Lily belonged to me.””
