Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in the Records

“Someone in your family helped him.””

Rachel’s words stayed in my head long after the call ended.

The phone was still pressed against my ear, but the line had already gone dead.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Because there was something terrifying about learning your husband had secrets.

But learning those secrets were connected to the people you trusted most?

That was different.

That felt like the floor disappearing beneath your feet.

“Emily.””

My father’s voice pulled me back.

I lowered the phone slowly.

He looked at me.

“What did she say?””

I didn’t answer right away.

I looked at Daniel.

He was standing near the kitchen counter, his face pale.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just waiting.

Like he already knew what was coming.

“Rachel said someone in my family helped you.””

My father’s eyes immediately went to Daniel.

Daniel looked down.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I am done with everyone protecting me by keeping me in the dark.””

My father looked at me.

“Sweetheart—”

“No, Dad.””

I held up my hand.

“I love you. I know you were trying to help. But tonight I found out my husband has a secret past, my father knew about it, and now there’s another person involved.””

I looked at Daniel.

“I deserve the truth.””

The kitchen was silent.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Your uncle David.””

I closed my eyes.

I had already heard the name.

But hearing it again made it real.

“My uncle?””

Daniel nodded.

“He helped me move money.””

My father stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You know it isn’t.””

My father’s face hardened.

“Be careful.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became bitter.

“Because the truth makes you uncomfortable?””

My father slammed his hand against the table.

“Do not stand in my house and pretend you are the victim.””

“I’m not.””

Daniel looked at him.

“But I’m also not the only person who made mistakes.””

I stared at him.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Daniel looked away.

For a moment, I thought he would refuse.

Then he sat down.

And for the first time that night, he looked like someone who was exhausted from carrying a secret.

“When I left your father’s company, I was already in trouble.””

I stayed standing.

“I had debts.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“And then?””

“I met David.””

My stomach turned.

“Where?””

“At a bar.””

My father scoffed.

“Of course.””

Daniel ignored him.

“David knew I was struggling. He knew I owed money. He told me he knew a way to fix everything.””

“What way?””

Daniel’s eyes met mine.

“He said nobody would notice if we moved money around temporarily.””

The word made me sick.

Temporarily.

People always used that word when they wanted to make something wrong sound smaller.

“And you believed him?””

Daniel nodded.

“I was desperate.””

“So you did it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

Because I wanted him to deny it.

I wanted him to give me some explanation that made everything easier.

But he didn’t.

“I transferred money from accounts. David showed me how to hide the transactions.””

My father shook his head.

“I can’t believe this.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew.””

“I knew you made a mistake.””

“No.””

Daniel stood.

“You knew there was someone else.””

My father went quiet.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He looked away.

And my heart sank.

“You knew?””

My father sighed.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

“Since before your wedding.””

I stepped back.

The betrayal wasn’t loud.

It didn’t feel like anger.

It felt like grief.

Because the people I loved had all decided what I could handle.

Everyone except me.

“You all made choices for me.””

My father looked hurt.

“That’s not what I wanted.””

“But it’s what happened.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Rachel.

I looked down.

There was a photo attached.

My fingers froze.

I opened it.

A document.

Old.

Yellowed.

At the bottom were three signatures.

Daniel.

David.

And another name.

A name I didn’t recognize.

But the date was what made my heart stop.

It was two months after Daniel and I got married.

I looked up.

“This happened after our wedding.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

I turned the phone around.

He looked at the screen.

And the color drained from his face.

My father stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

I watched his eyes move across the image.

Then he whispered:

“She wasn’t supposed to have that.””

My hands went cold.

“Who?””

“Rachel.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Who signed this?””

Daniel looked at me.

His silence was the answer.

“Daniel.””

He swallowed.

“The third signature.””

“Yes?””

He looked toward the stairs.

Toward Lily’s bedroom.

Then back at me.

“It belongs to someone who knows this family better than anyone.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the lights went out.

The entire house went dark.

Lily screamed upstairs.

“Mom!””

I ran.

I didn’t think.

I didn’t ask questions.

I just moved.

My feet hit the stairs as my father followed behind me.

“Lily!””

“I’m here!””

Her voice came from her bedroom.

I opened the door.

She was sitting on her bed, clutching her flashlight.

“Mom, I heard something.””

I walked over and held her.

“It’s okay.””

“No.””

She pointed toward the window.

“There was someone outside.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“I saw a shadow.””

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

His face was serious.

“What did you see?””

Lily looked at him.

“A person.””

My father stepped into the room.

“Everyone stay here.””

He moved toward the window.

The backyard was dark.

Still.

Empty.

Then he stopped.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

On the outside of Lily’s bedroom window was something scratched into the glass.

Three words.

Not a threat.

Not a warning.

A message.

*I KNOW EVERYTHING.*

My daughter buried her face against me.

Daniel stared at the words.

And for the first time, I saw him truly afraid.

Not of my father.

Not of losing control.

Of someone else.

Someone who knew the truth.

My father turned toward him.

“Who did you tell?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Nobody.””

My father looked at the message again.

“Then someone found out.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Rachel.

This time, only four words.

*Check David’s old office.*

I looked at Daniel.

Then my father.

And I knew the next truth we uncovered would change our family forever.

May you like

Because the person who had helped Daniel hide his past…

was not finished revealing it.
