Chapter 9: The Ghost From Dante’s Past
The drive to the cabin felt longer than any road I had ever traveled.
Not because of the distance.
Because of the silence.
Dante Moretti sat beside me staring at the photograph on his phone, as if looking at it long enough would make the impossible become real.
The person in the reflection.
The person he said was dead.
I had spent the last few days learning that Dante’s world was built on secrets.
But this was different.
This wasn’t a hidden betrayal.
This wasn’t someone lying about a business deal.
This was a ghost.
And ghosts were not supposed to hold cameras.
“Who is it?”” I asked again.
Dante didn’t answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the screen.
“Dante.””
Finally, he looked at me.
“His name was Victor Hale.””
I waited.
Nothing.
“That means nothing to me.””
“It should.””
“Why?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because Victor was the reason Elena disappeared.””
I gripped the steering wheel.
“And he died?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The same night Elena vanished.””
The rain tapped against the windshield.
I lowered my voice.
“Then how can he be in that picture?””
Dante looked away.
“That’s what I need to find out.””
I glanced at him.
“You’re scared.””
“No.””
“You are.””
He didn’t deny it.
That was the most frightening part.
Dante Moretti admitted fear when he couldn’t explain something.
After everything we had seen, I knew that meant this was bigger than any of us understood.
We drove another twenty minutes before the GPS signal disappeared.
The road became narrower.
Trees surrounded us on both sides.
No houses.
No lights.
Nothing.
“This is where the location ended,” Dante said.
I slowed the car.
“There’s nothing here.””
“Yes, there is.””
He pointed ahead.
Between the trees was a small dirt path.
I parked.
The moment we stepped outside, I felt it.
That strange feeling of being watched.
Dante felt it too.
His entire body changed.
The man who had sat silently in my car disappeared.
The dangerous man returned.
“Stay close.””
“I’m not a child.””
“I know.””
“Then stop telling me that.””
His eyes met mine.
“I’m telling you because I don’t want to lose another person tonight.””
The words stopped me.
Another person.
Not just Elena.
Someone else.
Someone he had failed before.
Before I could ask, a sound came from the cabin.
A door opening.
Dante moved instantly.
“Behind me.””
This time, I listened.
The cabin door opened slowly.
A woman stepped outside.
Older than the photograph.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Elena.
Dante stopped breathing.
For ten years, he had imagined this moment.
Maybe he imagined anger.
Maybe tears.
Maybe relief.
But reality was different.
Reality was standing five feet away from the person you thought you lost forever.
Neither of them moved.
“Dante.””
Her voice broke.
Just one word.
His name.
And somehow that was enough.
Dante stepped forward.
“Elena.””
I looked away.
Because some moments didn’t belong to strangers.
Some pain was private.
But then Elena looked at me.
And her expression changed.
“Who is she?””
Dante answered immediately.
“Cara.””
Elena studied me.
“She knows?””
“Yes.””
“All of it?””
“No.””
Dante looked at me.
“Not yet.””
That answer bothered me.
But before I could question it, Elena looked past us.
Her face changed.
“Where is Adrian?””
Dante frowned.
“He’s with us.””
“No.””
Her voice became urgent.
“No, he can’t be.””
The tension returned instantly.
“Why?”” Dante asked.
Elena looked terrified.
“Because if Adrian is here…”
She stepped closer.
“…then they already know where I am.””
A gunshot exploded.
The sound shattered the forest.
Dante grabbed me and pulled me down.
Another shot hit the cabin wall.
Elena screamed.
“Inside!””
We ran.
The cabin was small but reinforced.
Not a normal hiding place.
A safe room.
Dante noticed immediately.
“You prepared for this.””
Elena locked the door.
“I’ve been preparing for ten years.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
Even after everything.
He still hated that she had lived a life without him.
“Who is shooting?”” I asked.
Elena looked at Dante.
“You know.””
Dante’s expression darkened.
“Marco.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Marco is only a messenger.””
The room went quiet.
“Then who?””
Elena looked toward the window.
“The person who started everything.””
Another shot.
Everyone ducked.
Dante moved toward the side window.
Elena grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“Tell me.””
“I’m trying to protect you.””
“You disappeared for ten years.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“You don’t get to protect me by leaving.””
The pain in her face was immediate.
“I left because I loved you.””
“Then why didn’t you come back?””
“Because I found out the truth.””
“What truth?””
Elena looked at him.
“The person who wanted you dead wasn’t trying to destroy your empire.””
A pause.
“They were trying to stop you from finding out what your father did.””
Dante froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I looked between them.
“What does his father have to do with this?””
Elena answered softly.
“Everything.””
Another shot.
Closer.
The cabin shook.
Dante looked at the door.
“We need to leave.””
Elena nodded.
“There’s a tunnel behind the fireplace.””
I stared.
“A tunnel?””
She looked at me.
“You learn to survive when everyone wants you gone.””
Dante looked at her.
“How long were you planning to stay hidden?””
“Forever, if I had to.””
That answer hurt him.
But before he could respond, the door handle moved.
Someone was outside.
Slowly.
Calmly.
A voice came through the wood.
“Dante.””
Everyone froze.
Because we recognized it.
Marco.
“You always were difficult to kill.””
Dante raised his weapon.
Elena whispered:
“That’s not who you should be afraid of.””
The door shook.
Marco laughed outside.
“Open the door.””
Nobody moved.
Then another voice spoke.
A different voice.
A voice that made Dante go completely still.
A woman’s voice.
“Dante.””
His face changed.
I knew that expression now.
Shock.
Pain.
Disbelief.
“No.””
The voice came again.
“You need to know the truth.””
Dante lowered his weapon slightly.
“Impossible.””
Elena looked terrified.
“Dante…”
The door began to open.
Slowly.
The lock had been broken.
And standing outside was not Marco.
Not Adrian.
Not anyone we expected.
It was a woman.
An older woman.
A woman whose face I had seen only in old photographs.
Dante whispered her name.
The name of someone who was supposed to be dead.
“Mother?””
The woman looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Dante.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“I’m the reason Elena disappeared.””
Dante stared at her.
And for the first time since I met him…
He looked completely broken.
Because the person who had destroyed his life wasn’t an enemy.
It wasn’t a stranger.
May you like
It wasn’t even a betrayal from someone close.
It was the woman who gave him life.
