Chapter 6: The Wife Who Came Back From The Dead

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not Dante.

Not me.

Not Vanessa.

The woman standing at the end of the hallway looked exactly like someone who had escaped from a nightmare.

Her dark hair was wet from the rain.

Her expensive dress was torn near the sleeve.

There was dirt on her shoes.

But the most terrifying thing about her was not that she was alive.

It was that she looked calm.

Like she had expected this moment.

Like she had been waiting for Dante to find her.

Dante’s voice was quiet.

“How?””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“That’s the first thing you say?””

His eyes narrowed.

“You were supposed to be gone.””

A small smile appeared on her lips.

“Were you hoping I was dead?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“I was hoping you were safe.””

For the first time, Vanessa’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not sadness.

Something closer to disappointment.

“That’s always been your problem, Dante.””

She stepped closer.

“You always want to believe people are better than they are.””

I looked between them.

This was not how I expected this reunion to happen.

I expected screaming.

Accusations.

Anger.

Instead, there was something worse.

History.

Ten years of it.

Dante moved slightly in front of me.

A protective gesture.

Vanessa noticed.

Her eyes moved to me.

“So this is Cara.””

My body went still.

“You know my name.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Of course I do.””

Dante’s voice sharpened.

“How?””

Vanessa ignored him.

“You’re younger than I expected.””

I felt uncomfortable.

Like I was being examined.

“Expected?””

She walked closer.

“You became very important in one night.””

“I didn’t ask for that.””

“No.””

Her smile faded.

“But you still chose it.””

Dante stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Still protecting strangers?””

“She saved my life.””

“And now she knows everything.””

The hallway became silent.

I felt Dante’s eyes shift slightly.

Vanessa noticed.

And smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“That look.””

She pointed at him.

“The same look you had when you lost her.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Dante’s face changed.

“Vanessa.””

But she continued.

“Tell her.””

Dante said nothing.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Tell Cara what happened ten years ago.””

I looked at Dante.

“What is she talking about?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything Vanessa could have said.

Because Dante Moretti always had an answer.

Always.

But now he was silent.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You see?””

She looked at me.

“That’s what he does.””

“What?””

“He decides what people are allowed to know.””

Dante’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent.””

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“I never said I was.””

The honesty of that shocked me.

Most people lied when they were caught.

Vanessa didn’t.

She simply stood there and accepted the darkness.

Dante’s voice lowered.

“You tried to kill me.””

“Yes.””

The word hit the room like a gunshot.

My heart stopped.

Vanessa admitted it.

No denial.

No excuse.

Just yes.

“Why?”” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“You want to know?””

I nodded.

“Because Dante took everything from me.””

Dante’s eyes turned cold.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You destroyed my family.””

“I saved your family.””

“You destroyed my brother.””

The silence afterward was immediate.

I looked at Dante.

His expression didn’t change.

But something in his eyes did.

A memory.

A wound.

Vanessa saw it.

“You never told her.””

“Stop.””

“You never told anyone.””

Dante’s voice became dangerous.

“Stop.””

But Vanessa kept going.

“Ten years ago, Dante made a choice.””

She looked at me.

“A choice that killed someone.””

I swallowed.

“What choice?””

Dante looked away.

And that frightened me.

Because I realized something.

There were two different versions of Dante Moretti.

The man everyone feared.

And the man who carried something too painful to speak about.

Vanessa walked toward the living room.

“Sit down.””

Nobody moved.

She looked at Dante.

“If I wanted you dead, you wouldn’t be standing here.””

“That’s not exactly comforting.””

“It’s the truth.””

Dante stared at her.

“Where were you?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Running.””

“From me?””

“From them.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Them?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Yes.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who?””

She looked at Dante.

“You still haven’t figured it out?””

Dante’s jaw clenched.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You won’t believe me.””

“Try.””

She walked to the table and picked up the photograph of Dante’s first wife.

The one we had found in her room.

Her expression changed when she saw it.

“You found this.””

Dante noticed.

“You knew about it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

“Because she was the reason everything started.””

I stared at her.

“Who was she?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Her name was Elena.””

The name seemed to affect Dante.

Just like before.

“Dante loved her.””

I looked at him.

He didn’t deny it.

“She wasn’t just his wife,” Vanessa continued.

“She was the only person who knew the truth about him.””

“What truth?””

Vanessa looked toward the windows.

“The truth that he wasn’t born a monster.””

Dante’s expression darkened.

“Enough.””

But Vanessa’s voice became softer.

“Elena tried to leave this life behind.””

A pause.

“She found out something she shouldn’t have.””

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Dante.

“Who was really controlling everything.””

The room felt smaller.

Dante stepped forward.

“Where is Elena?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved back to him.

“You still don’t know?””

A long silence.

Then:

“No.””

Vanessa looked genuinely surprised.

“After ten years…”

She whispered:

“You never found out.””

I watched Dante carefully.

The confidence was gone.

For the first time, he looked lost.

Vanessa continued.

“Elena didn’t disappear.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“She was taken.””

Dante froze.

“By who?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

At the shadows.

At the cameras.

At the house around us.

Then she said the one thing that changed everything.

“By someone who still works for you.””

Nobody spoke.

Then a sound came from behind us.

A glass breaking.

Everyone turned.

A figure moved in the darkness near the kitchen.

Dante immediately reached for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

He moved forward.

I followed behind him despite knowing I shouldn’t.

The kitchen lights flickered.

Then turned off.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Dante grabbed my arm.

“Stay here.””

A second later, a voice came through the darkness.

A familiar voice.

A voice I had heard before.

“Dante.””

My heart dropped.

Because I recognized it.

It was Adrian.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Dante’s grip tightened around my arm.

“Adrian?””

The figure stepped into the faint light.

It was him.

Dante’s trusted adviser.

The man who had helped him investigate the crash.

The man who had been inside his home all day.

But Adrian wasn’t alone.

He held something in his hand.

A small folder.

And a gun.

Dante’s face went completely still.

“Explain.””

Adrian looked tired.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Just tired.

“I’m sorry.””

The words made the room colder.

Dante stared at him.

“Why?””

Adrian looked at the folder.

Then at me.

Then back at Dante.

“Because Elena never disappeared.””

Dante stopped breathing.

Adrian opened the folder.

“And because the person who ordered her death…”

He placed the papers on the table.

“…was not your enemy.””

May you like

A pause.

“It was you.””
