Chapter 5: The House Of Lies

I always thought rich people lived in places that felt safe.

That was the lie I believed before I stepped inside Dante Moretti’s home.

From the outside, the Moretti estate looked like something from a movie.

A massive stone house surrounded by tall iron gates.

Perfect gardens.

Security cameras hidden between the trees.

Guards standing at every entrance.

The kind of place where nobody could get close without permission.

But as I followed Dante through the front doors, I realized something.

A fortress could still have a weakness.

Sometimes the person who destroyed you didn’t climb over the walls.

Sometimes you invited them inside.

The front hallway was enormous.

A marble staircase curved upward toward the second floor.

Paintings covered the walls.

Everything was beautiful.

Everything was expensive.

Everything felt cold.

I stood there holding my small bag of borrowed clothes, suddenly aware of how out of place I looked.

A waitress in a mansion.

A stranger in a world she didn’t understand.

Dante noticed.

“You’re uncomfortable.””

I looked at him.

“That obvious?””

“Yes.””

“I’m just trying not to touch anything that costs more than my car.””

For a second, his expression softened.

“You don’t have to be afraid of this place.””

“I’m not afraid of the house.””

“What are you afraid of?””

I looked around.

“The people.””

That answer made him quiet.

Because he knew exactly what I meant.

A man in his position didn’t fear empty rooms.

He feared the people standing beside him.

A woman walked toward us from the hallway.

She was older, maybe in her sixties, wearing a simple dark dress.

The moment she saw Dante, relief crossed her face.

“Mr. Moretti.””

Dante nodded.

“Maria.””

She looked at the bandage on his shoulder.

“Oh my God.””

“I’m fine.””

“You are not fine.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“And who is this?””

Before I could answer, Dante did.

“Cara Fields.””

Maria studied me carefully.

Then she looked at Dante.

“You brought a stranger here?””

“I brought the person who saved my life.””

That changed everything.

Maria’s expression softened.

She looked at my hands.

At my tired face.

At the cuts that hadn’t fully healed.

“Then she is welcome.””

I didn’t know what to say.

“Thank you.””

Maria smiled gently.

“You look like someone who needs sleep.””

“I probably do.””

“You look like someone who hasn’t slept in years.””

That caught me off guard.

Because she wasn’t wrong.

Before I could respond, a voice came from behind us.

“So this is the woman who found my brother.””

I turned.

A man stood near the doorway.

He looked younger than Dante.

Late twenties.

Same dark hair.

Same sharp eyes.

But the feeling around him was different.

Dante immediately became colder.

“Leo.””

The man smiled.

“Nice to see you too.””

I looked at Dante.

“Your brother?””

“Yes.””

Leo walked closer.

“So you’re Cara.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at my uniform bag.

“You were working at Bellini’s?””

“Yes.””

“And you overheard Vanessa.””

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know that?””

Leo smiled slightly.

“News travels fast.””

Dante stepped between us.

“Enough.””

Leo raised his hands.

“I’m just asking questions.””

“You ask too many.””

“And you trust too little.””

The words hung between them.

I felt the tension immediately.

This family had history.

Painful history.

Leo looked at me again.

“Do you know what happens to people who get involved with Dante?””

Dante’s voice turned sharp.

“Leave.””

Leo ignored him.

“They disappear.””

A silence followed.

Then Dante spoke.

“Leave.””

This time, Leo listened.

But before walking away, he looked at me.

“Be careful, Cara.””

Then he smiled.

“Not everyone here wants you dead.””

The way he said it made me wonder why he didn’t say everyone.

When he disappeared upstairs, I turned to Dante.

“Your family is complicated.””

“That’s one word for it.””

“What’s another?””

He looked toward the staircase.

“Dangerous.””

Later that evening, I sat in a guest room that was larger than my entire apartment.

That should have made me happy.

Instead, it made me nervous.

I kept thinking about Vanessa.

Her voice.

Her laugh.

The way she had casually talked about becoming a widow.

How could someone sleep next to a person and plan their death?

A knock came at the door.

I expected Maria.

Instead, Dante stood there.

I sat up.

“Is something wrong?””

“Yes.””

My heart jumped.

“What happened?””

He stepped inside.

“The police found Vanessa’s car.””

“Where?””

“Twenty miles from here.””

“Was she inside?””

“No.””

I waited.

“There was blood.””

The room became silent.

“Do you think she’s dead?””

Dante looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

“You’re not relieved.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa is dead, someone else controls the story.””

I thought about that.

If she disappeared, she couldn’t explain herself.

She couldn’t reveal who helped her.

She couldn’t tell anyone the truth.

Dante looked at me.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

“My world operates differently from yours.””

“You mean because people try to murder each other?””

His mouth tightened.

“Yes.””

“That’s not normal.””

“No.””

He looked away.

“But it’s what I know.””

For some reason, that answer made me sad.

Not because I felt sorry for him.

Because I realized he had accepted loneliness as normal.

A phone rang.

Dante checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

Then he handed me the phone.

It was Maria.

Her voice was shaking.

“Mr. Moretti?””

“Yes.””

“You need to come downstairs.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then Maria whispered:

“I found something in Vanessa’s room.””

Dante looked at me.

“Stay here.””

Of course, I followed him.

He noticed immediately.

“Cara.””

“No.””

“You said that quickly.””

“Because you’re going downstairs into a room where someone might have left evidence of trying to kill you.””

“That is exactly why you should stay away.””

“Dante.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m already involved.””

He stared at me.

Then sighed.

“Your ability to ignore instructions is impressive.””

“I’ve heard that before.””

We walked downstairs together.

Vanessa’s room was on the second floor.

The door was open.

Maria stood outside.

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t touch anything.””

Dante entered first.

I followed.

The room was beautiful.

White furniture.

Expensive perfume bottles.

A huge closet.

Everything looked untouched.

Until Dante walked toward the nightstand.

Maria pointed.

“Behind the drawer.””

Dante opened it.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then he pulled out a small envelope.

No name.

No writing.

Just sealed.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph.

Dante stared at it.

His face changed.

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dante?””

Slowly, he handed me the picture.

My breath stopped.

It was taken outside Bellini’s.

From the night of the crash.

There was me.

Standing in the rain.

Running after his car.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had followed me.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

Three words.

*She knows everything.*

I looked at Dante.

“Who wrote this?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he was staring at something else.

A second photograph had fallen from the envelope.

I picked it up.

And this time, the person in the picture wasn’t me.

It was Dante.

Taken years earlier.

Standing beside a woman I had never seen before.

A woman who looked terrified.

Underneath the photograph was a date.

And one name.

A name that made Dante go completely still.

“Who is she?””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then, quietly:

“My first wife.””

I stared at him.

“Your first wife?””

Dante looked at the photograph.

“She disappeared ten years ago.””

A chill moved through me.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Did Vanessa know?””

His eyes lifted to mine.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Cara…”

He took the photograph from my hand.

“If Vanessa knew about her…”

He looked toward the dark hallway.

“…then this was never just about killing me.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Dante immediately turned.

Someone was in the house.

Someone who shouldn’t be.

He moved toward the stairs.

I followed.

“Dante.””

He looked back.

“Stay behind me.””

We climbed slowly.

The hallway was silent.

Too silent.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A woman’s voice.

A voice I recognized.

A voice that should have been impossible.

“Looking for me?””

Dante stopped.

I felt the blood leave my face.

Because standing at the end of the hallway…

Was Vanessa Moretti.

May you like

Alive.

And smiling.
