Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew My Father’s Last Secret

I spent the entire afternoon staring at the clock.

Every minute felt heavier than the last.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

The same walls that had held laughter the night before now felt like they were holding their breath.

My mother sat in the living room with her hands folded tightly in her lap.

Claire sat across from her, looking like someone waiting for a verdict.

And I stood by the window, watching cars pass outside, wondering how my life had changed so completely in less than twenty-four hours.

Yesterday, my biggest problem was a long workday.

Yesterday, I thought my marriage had problems we could fix.

Yesterday, I thought my father’s death was a tragedy I had already accepted.

Now I knew nothing.

Not about my wife.

Not about my family.

Not even about the past I thought belonged to me.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

*7:00 PM. Riverside Hotel. Come alone. — Daniel*

I stared at the screen.

Claire noticed.

“He messaged you?””

I nodded.

She stood.

“You can’t go alone.””

I looked at her.

“You said he wanted to meet me.””

“He did.””

“Then why can’t I go alone?””

“Because you don’t know him.””

I almost laughed.

“Neither do you.””

That hurt her.

I saw it.

But it was true.

“You’re right,” she whispered.

The honesty caught me off guard.

For once, Claire wasn’t defending herself.

She wasn’t arguing.

She was scared.

“I know what my father is capable of.””

I looked at her.

“Then tell me.””

She hesitated.

“Tell you what?””

“The truth.””

Her eyes dropped.

“I don’t know where to start.””

“Start with why you married me.””

The question changed everything.

My mother looked away.

Claire became still.

For several seconds, I thought she would avoid answering.

Then she sat down.

“I met you before you met me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She nodded.

“My father knew your family was struggling.””

My stomach tightened.

“Keep going.””

“He asked me to get close to you.””

The room went silent.

My mother gasped.

I stared at Claire.

“You’re saying…”

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“My father wanted information.””

I felt sick.

“So our entire relationship was a plan?””

“At first.””

The words hurt more because she didn’t lie.

“At first?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t expect to love you.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“You don’t get to tell me you love me after admitting you were sent to spy on my family.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“Did you know about my mother before we got married?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know about my father?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know your father was connected to all of it?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

I walked away from her.

Because if I stayed there, I didn’t know what I would say.

Or what I would do.

My mother stood.

“Please.””

I turned.

“Please what?””

“Don’t let anger make your decision.””

I looked at her.

“You kept secrets too.””

Her face fell.

Immediately, I regretted saying it.

But the pain was real.

Everyone wanted me to understand why they lied.

Nobody understood what it felt like to be the person everyone lied to.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked away.

“I need answers.””

My mother nodded.

“Then go.””

I looked at her.

“You’re okay with that?””

“No.””

She smiled sadly.

“But you deserve the truth.””

At 6:40, I left.

Alone.

I drove to the Riverside Hotel with my father’s old recorder sitting in the passenger seat.

I didn’t know why I brought it.

Maybe because it was the only thing I had left that belonged to him.

Maybe because I wanted him with me.

The hotel lobby was almost empty.

A man stood near the window.

Older than I remembered.

His hair was gray.

His face had deeper lines.

But I knew him immediately.

Daniel Mercer.

He turned when I approached.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“You look like your father.””

I didn’t sit.

“I don’t know if that’s a compliment.””

“It is.””

“Why did you ask to meet me?””

Daniel looked around.

Then motioned toward a private sitting area.

“I don’t have much time.””

“Funny.””

I sat across from him.

“Neither did my father.””

His expression changed.

A small crack of guilt.

“You know.””

“I know enough.””

He looked at the recorder in my hand.

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

He leaned back.

“Then you know your father was trying to expose the truth.””

“I know he thought someone betrayed him.””

Daniel nodded.

“He was right.””

I stared.

“Was it you?””

A long silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Yes.””

The answer was so direct I wasn’t prepared for it.

“You admit it?””

“I betrayed your father.””

My hands tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I was desperate.””

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

He looked down.

“It’s my explanation.””

I waited.

“My company was failing before your father’s.””

“You mean Daniel Mercer was struggling?””

“Yes.””

The confession surprised me.

“I needed money.””

“So you stole from my father?””

“I borrowed.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You stole.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

“I convinced myself I would pay it back.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Then my father found out.””

“Yes.””

“And he was going to the police.””

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel looked away.

“I went to your house.””

“To threaten him?””

“At first.””

I froze.

“At first?””

He closed his eyes.

“I went there to scare him.””

The anger inside me rose.

“And then?””

“Then I saw your mother.””

“What about her?””

“She knew.””

I stared.

“Knew what?””

“That your uncle was involved.””

The name hit again.

Robert.

My father’s brother.

“How?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father trusted his brother more than anyone.””

“Except he shouldn’t have.””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“What happened?””

Daniel sighed.

“Your uncle was moving money through fake accounts.””

My stomach turned.

“Why?””

“Because he thought he deserved more.””

I looked down.

My family.

My blood.

The people who hugged me at my father’s funeral.

Daniel continued.

“Your father confronted him.””

“And?””

“Your uncle panicked.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Did he kill my father?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I didn’t see it happen.””

That wasn’t the answer I wanted.

“But?””

Daniel hesitated.

“But I saw your uncle leave your house.””

The room became silent.

“When?””

“The night your father died.””

I stared.

“You never told anyone?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I was guilty too.””

I couldn’t argue.

He was.

But that didn’t explain everything.

“Then why tell me now?””

Daniel reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out a folder.

“I have proof.””

He placed it on the table.

Inside were financial documents.

Bank transfers.

Signatures.

Records.

I looked through them.

Then stopped.

One signature caught my attention.

My uncle’s.

But underneath it was something else.

A handwritten note.

My father’s handwriting.

I recognized it instantly.

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“The final thing your father discovered.””

I read the note.

Only one sentence.

*If anything happens to me, do not trust the person who says they are protecting you.*

I looked up.

“Who was he talking about?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward the entrance.

His face suddenly changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

I turned.

A man stood near the hotel doors.

Watching us.

Older.

Familiar.

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized him from the photograph.

My uncle Robert.

Daniel quickly stood.

“You need to leave.””

I grabbed the folder.

“What about you?””

He looked at Robert.

“I’ll handle him.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Listen to me.””

His voice became urgent.

“Your father didn’t die because he discovered the theft.””

I froze.

“Then why?””

Daniel’s eyes moved to the man approaching us.

“He died because he discovered who was helping cover it up.””

Robert was getting closer.

And then Daniel whispered the words that made my entire world fall apart.

“The person your father was trying to protect you from…”

May you like

He looked at me.

“…is the same person who has been standing beside your family all these years.””
