Chapter 6: The Meeting She Never Told Me About
The photo stayed on my phone screen.
I couldn’t look away.
My mother.
Sitting across from Daniel Mercer.
The man my father believed betrayed him.
The man who had been connected to the collapse of my family.
The man whose name had been buried in our house for twelve years.
And my mother had met with him.
Three days ago.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was worse than an argument.
Because arguments had answers.
Silence had secrets.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
Her eyes were already full of tears.
“I can explain.””
Those five words made my stomach sink.
Because people only said them when the truth looked impossible to defend.
“Then explain.””
Claire stood behind me, watching.
My mother looked at the floor.
“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””
“Like what?””
She swallowed.
“Like I was hiding something from you.””
I laughed quietly.
“Were you?””
She didn’t answer.
I nodded.
“That’s what I thought.””
My mother reached for my hand.
I moved slightly.
Not because I didn’t love her.
Because I was hurt.
And she saw it.
The pain on her face was immediate.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“Why did you meet him?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because he contacted me.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“He said he wanted to talk.””
“About what?””
My mother’s voice dropped.
“Your father.””
The name alone changed the room.
I looked at the recorder on the table.
“You met the man who might have destroyed Dad’s life, and you didn’t tell me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“Protect me from what?””
My mother had no answer.
And that hurt more than anything.
Claire stepped closer.
“She was never going to tell you.””
I turned.
“Not now, Claire.””
“No, you need to hear this.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected?””
Claire nodded.
“After we got married, my father told me he had contacted your mother.””
My chest tightened.
“And you said nothing?””
She looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know what he wanted.””
“You knew enough.””
“Yes.””
Her honesty surprised me.
She didn’t try to deny it.
She didn’t try to twist it.
She simply admitted it.
And somehow that made everything more confusing.
“You both kept secrets from me.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
I grabbed my jacket.
“Where are you going?”” my mother asked.
“To find Daniel.””
Her face changed.
“No.””
I stopped.
“Why?””
“Because he’s dangerous.””
I turned slowly.
“You just met him.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Exactly.””
That answer confused me.
“What does that mean?””
My mother looked toward the recorder.
Then at the photo.
“Daniel doesn’t do anything without a reason.””
I stared at her.
“Then what reason did he have for meeting you?””
She sat down.
Her shoulders shaking.
“He wanted to make a deal.””
“A deal?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
My mother looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“He wanted me to say your father was responsible for the company’s collapse.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“What?””
“He wanted me to sign a statement.””
“Why?””
“Because if I admitted your father was unstable and made bad financial decisions…”
She stopped.
I finished the sentence.
“Then Daniel would be innocent.””
She nodded.
I looked at Claire.
“And you knew your father was trying this?””
Claire’s face tightened.
“Yes.””
My anger returned.
“Why didn’t you stop him?””
“Because I tried.””
I stared at her.
She laughed bitterly.
“You think I wanted this?””
She pointed toward the recorder.
“My father ruined people’s lives. I know what he’s capable of.””
“Then why stay close to him?””
Claire looked away.
“Because he’s still my father.””
That answer was more human than I expected.
And for a second, I saw something I hadn’t allowed myself to see.
Claire wasn’t only the woman who hurt my mother.
She was also someone trapped by her own family.
But that didn’t erase what she had done.
“What happened when you refused?””
My mother looked at me.
“I didn’t sign.””
“What did he do?””
“He threatened me.””
My hands tightened.
“With what?””
She hesitated.
Then reached into her purse.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I didn’t want you to see this.””
I took it.
It was a photograph.
Not of my mother and Daniel.
Something else.
Something older.
A picture from twelve years ago.
My father.
Daniel.
And someone else.
A third person standing between them.
I looked closer.
Then my breath stopped.
Because I recognized him.
“What is this?””
My mother looked at the picture.
“Your uncle.””
My father’s older brother.
The man who had attended my father’s funeral.
The man who cried beside us.
The man who told me:
“Your father was a good man.””
I looked up.
“Why is Uncle Robert with them?””
My mother’s face became pale.
“Because he was involved.””
The room went silent again.
“How involved?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I know he met with Daniel.””
“Why?””
“Because your father found out.””
I stared.
“Found out what?””
My mother took a shaky breath.
“Your uncle and Daniel had been working together.””
The pieces began moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
My father’s failing company.
The missing money.
Daniel’s betrayal.
The hidden evidence.
My uncle’s involvement.
And my mother standing in the middle of it all.
But something still didn’t make sense.
“Mom.””
She looked up.
“Why didn’t Dad expose them?””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“Because he was trying to protect someone.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
My mother whispered:
“Me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Your father found out I had borrowed money from Daniel.””
I froze.
“You?””
She nodded.
“After the company struggled, I thought I could help your father.””
“How?””
“I asked Daniel for a loan.””
“Why would you ask him?””
“Because he was your father’s partner.””
I shook my head.
“So Daniel used that against you?””
“Yes.””
My mother’s voice cracked.
“He told your father I was involved.””
“But you weren’t.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“But your father believed me.””
I swallowed.
“Dad thought you betrayed him?””
“For a short time.””
“And then?””
“He learned the truth.””
I looked at the recorder.
“He made this.””
My mother nodded.
“And he planned to expose everyone.””
“Then why didn’t he?””
Her face collapsed.
“Because he never got the chance.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at the clock.
The entire morning had passed without me noticing.
My life had become a collection of questions.
My wife.
My mother.
My father.
Everyone had pieces of the truth.
Everyone had hidden them.
Then Claire’s phone rang.
She looked down.
Her face changed instantly.
“What?””
I watched her answer.
“Dad?””
My body went still.
Daniel.
She turned away.
“No, that’s not what we agreed.””
A pause.
Then her expression became terrified.
“What do you mean you have proof?””
I stepped closer.
She noticed me listening.
Her voice lowered.
“I told you I wouldn’t do that.””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“You promised me nobody would get hurt.””
The call ended.
Claire slowly lowered the phone.
I stared at her.
“What proof?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“My father found something.””
“What?””
She looked at the recorder.
Then at my mother.
Then at me.
“He found the original documents from your father’s company.””
My heart started racing.
“What documents?””
She whispered:
“The ones that prove who actually stole the money.””
I stepped closer.
“Where are they?””
Claire looked like she was fighting with herself.
Then she said:
“My father has them.””
A pause.
“And he wants to meet you tonight.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he says he can prove your father’s death wasn’t an accident.””
Nobody spoke.
The words hung in the air.
Not an accident.
After twelve years of believing my father simply collapsed…
May you like
I finally had to face the possibility that he had been taken from us.
And the person who might know the truth was the same man who destroyed our family.
