Chapter 9: The Final Betrayal

The name Daniel gave me stayed in my mind all night.

Someone I never suspected.

Someone close.

Someone who had access.

Someone who had helped Marcus hide everything.

The next morning, Daniel arrived with the answer.

I expected another shock.

I was wrong.

It was worse.

“It was your former accountant,” he said.

I stared.

“What?””

Daniel placed a file on the table.

“Victor Lawson.””

My chest tightened.

Victor had worked with my family for fifteen years.

He handled investments.

Reviewed contracts.

Managed financial reports.

I trusted him.

Taylor looked confused.

“Why would he help Marcus?””

Daniel opened the file.

“Because Marcus paid him.””

The evidence was clear.

Payments.

Hidden transfers.

Fake reports.

Victor had been quietly changing documents for years.

Including the original ownership records.

“He was trying to make it look like Marcus owned the properties.””

I looked at the papers.

All those years.

All those signatures.

All that trust.

I had not been defeated by Marcus.

I had been betrayed by someone standing beside me.

The worst wounds rarely come from strangers.

They come from people who know exactly where to cut.

Victor agreed to meet us.

He arrived at my office looking old.

Tired.

Broken.

“I know you hate me.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t hate you.””

He looked surprised.

“I’m disappointed.””

That hurt him more.

“I made one mistake.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked down.

“I made many.””

He admitted everything.

Marcus had approached him years ago.

At first, it was small.

A favor.

A changed document.

A delayed report.

Then it became impossible to stop.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Victor looked ashamed.

“Because every time I wanted to, Marcus reminded me what would happen.””

“With what?””

“My family.””

Silence.

Again.

Fear.

Marcus’s greatest weapon.

Not money.

Not influence.

Fear.

But now, fear was running out of places to hide.

Victor gave us the final evidence.

A recording.

Marcus’s plan.

Not just to control the hospital.

To destroy Taylor completely.

The recording began.

Marcus’s voice.

“She won’t leave if she has nothing.””

Another voice.

Victor.

“What about her mother?””

Marcus laughed.

“Her mother thinks she’s powerful.””

A pause.

“She has no idea how easy it is to make someone lose everything.””

Taylor closed her eyes.

I reached for her hand.

Then Marcus said the words that changed everything.

“I’ll make Taylor look unstable. Everyone will think she’s lying.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the moment we knew.

This was never about business.

It was about control.

The final hearing happened one month later.

Marcus entered the courtroom for the last time.

No cameras.

No applause.

No crowd cheering his name.

Just silence.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

The verdict came quickly.

The lawsuits were dismissed.

The asset transfers were reversed.

Marcus Hale lost the empire he built.

But then the judge looked at Taylor.

And said something I will never forget.

“Your courage allowed others to come forward.””

Taylor cried.

Not because she was weak.

Because she finally understood.

Her voice mattered.

Outside the courthouse, Marcus stood alone.

For the first time in years.

No assistants.

No employees.

No one protecting him.

He looked at me.

“You ruined my life.””

I stared at him.

“No, Marcus.””

I looked at Taylor.

“You finally have to live with it.””

He walked away.

And for a moment, I thought it was over.

Then Taylor received a message.

She opened it.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She handed me the phone.

The message contained one sentence.

*There is still one secret Marcus never told you.*

Below it was an attachment.

A photograph.

Taylor looked at it.

Then whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at the image.

And my blood went cold.

May you like

Because the secret Marcus had buried for years was not about money.

It was about the night Taylor first disappeared from our lives.
