Chapter 7: The Witness Nobody Expected
Rachel Morgan sat across from us with shaking hands.
For ten years, she had been the person standing beside Marcus Hale.
She scheduled his meetings.
Managed his calls.
Protected his image.
If Marcus was the face of the empire, Rachel was the person who kept the machinery running behind him.
And now she looked terrified.
“I know you have every reason not to trust me,” she said.
Taylor crossed her arms.
“You worked for him.””
Rachel lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
“You helped him.””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
I watched her carefully.
People often confessed when they needed forgiveness.
But sometimes they confessed because they were running out of places to hide.
“Why are you here?”” I asked.
Rachel opened the folder.
“Because Marcus is planning something.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“What?””
She pulled out several documents.
“He has been preparing a comeback.””
Taylor laughed bitterly.
“A comeback?””
Rachel nodded.
“He believes he can rebuild.””
“How?””
“By destroying the people who took him down.””
My expression hardened.
“Us.””
Rachel nodded.
“He thinks if he damages your credibility, the board will lose confidence. He thinks if Taylor looks unstable, nobody will believe her.””
Taylor looked sick.
“He’s still trying to make me the problem.””
“Yes.””
Rachel’s voice cracked.
“Because that’s what he always does.””
The room went silent.
Then Rachel said something unexpected.
“I should have helped you sooner.””
Taylor looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
Rachel stared at the floor.
“I knew.””
“Knew what?””
“The first time.””
Taylor froze.
Rachel swallowed.
“The night he grabbed your arm.””
My daughter’s face changed.
“You saw?””
Rachel nodded.
“I was bringing him documents. I heard yelling.””
“And you did nothing?””
The pain in Taylor’s voice was obvious.
Rachel started crying.
“I was twenty-seven. I was terrified of losing my job.””
Taylor looked away.
“You watched.””
“Yes.””
Rachel wiped her face.
“I have hated myself for years.””
Nobody spoke.
Because there was no excuse.
Only truth.
Then Rachel placed another document on the table.
“This is why I came.””
I looked down.
It was a security report.
From the hospital.
A report Marcus had tried to erase.
“What is this?”” Daniel asked.
Rachel answered quietly:
“Proof that Marcus was monitoring Taylor.””
Taylor frowned.
“Monitoring?””
Rachel nodded.
“He installed access systems connected to her medical records.””
My blood ran cold.
“He tracked her?””
“Yes.””
Taylor looked at her phone.
“He knew every appointment.””
“Yes.””
The room felt smaller.
This was not just abuse.
It was control.
Marcus had built a cage around my daughter and convinced her it was protection.
Daniel looked through the pages.
“This is enough to reopen the investigation.””
Rachel nodded.
“There’s more.””
She reached into her bag.
A small flash drive.
“Everything is on here.””
“What kind of everything?”” I asked.
Rachel looked at Taylor.
“Everything Marcus thought he deleted.””
That night, we reviewed the files.
Messages.
Financial records.
Internal communications.
And then we found something.
A recording.
Marcus’s voice filled the room.
“If she leaves me, I lose everything.””
Another voice answered.
A woman.
Evelyn.
“You need to calm down.””
Marcus laughed.
“She thinks her mother can save her.””
My hands tightened.
Then Marcus said:
“Her mother doesn’t understand who she’s dealing with.””
The recording continued.
“She thinks she owns the foundation.””
A pause.
“She has no idea what I already changed.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Taylor stared at the speakers.
Marcus’s voice continued.
“By the time she realizes, everything will belong to me.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Because we all understood one thing.
Marcus had not just planned to survive.
He had planned to win.
The next morning, Daniel arrived with news.
And this time, his face was not worried.
It was shocked.
“Marcus filed a lawsuit.””
I stood.
“For what?””
Daniel looked at Taylor.
“He claims your mother stole his company.””
Taylor stared.
“What?””
Daniel placed the paperwork down.
“He is trying to reverse everything.””
I looked at the first page.
Then I saw the signature.
The person supporting Marcus’s claim.
My heart dropped.
Because it wasn’t one of his lawyers.
May you like
It was someone closer.
Someone whose name had been hidden until now.
