Chapter 6: The Signature I Never Gave

I stared at Daniel.

For a moment, I honestly thought I had misunderstood him.

“Say that again.””

Daniel looked down at the document in his hand.

“The guardianship papers were signed with your name.””

The lodge became completely silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence that comes when everyone is waiting for something impossible to be explained.

I took the papers from him.

My eyes moved across the page.

There it was.

My name.

*Richard Bellacorte.*

My signature.

My supposed approval.

My supposed agreement that Mark and Claudia should have complete control over Noah’s future.

I stared at the ink.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“I didn’t sign this.””

Mark immediately spoke.

“Dad—”

I looked at him.

“Did I sign this?””

His mouth closed.

That was enough.

A person who knew the truth didn’t need time to answer.

They needed courage.

And my son didn’t have enough of it.

“No,” I said quietly.

I looked at the document again.

“I never signed this.””

Claudia stepped forward.

“Richard, maybe you forgot.””

I slowly turned.

“Excuse me?””

She lifted her hands.

“I’m just saying, with everything you handle, maybe you don’t remember every document.””

I stared at her.

“You think I don’t remember signing legal documents involving my only grandchild?””

“It was years ago.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I remember every document connected to my family.””

She looked away.

Good.

Because she knew.

I knew.

Everyone in that room knew.

Something criminal had happened.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Sir, there’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He opened another page.

“The witness signatures.””

I scanned the names.

Then stopped.

One of them was familiar.

A lawyer.

A man who had worked with my company for over a decade.

A man I trusted.

“Thomas Vane?””

Daniel nodded.

“He witnessed the signing.””

I looked at Mark.

“Where is Thomas?””

Mark didn’t answer.

“Where is he?””

Claudia stepped in.

“He moved away.””

I looked at her.

“How convenient.””

Her face tightened.

“You’re accusing everyone.””

“No.””

I folded the papers.

“I’m discovering who betrayed me.””

Noah shifted on the couch.

His eyes opened slightly.

“Grandpa?””

Immediately, my anger disappeared.

I walked over and sat beside him.

“Hey, buddy.””

He rubbed his eyes.

“Are you mad?””

I looked at him.

Three years old.

And already learning to read anger like it was his responsibility.

“No.””

I touched his hair.

“I’m not mad at you.””

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

He looked toward Emily.

Then froze.

His tiny face changed.

“Mom?””

The room stopped.

Emily covered her mouth.

She had probably imagined this moment a thousand times.

But nothing could prepare a mother for hearing her child say that word.

She slowly knelt.

“Hi, Noah.””

He stared at her.

Like he was trying to remember something from a dream.

“You’re real?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“But Daddy said…”

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

Noah looked confused.

“Why didn’t you come home?””

The question was innocent.

Simple.

But it destroyed her.

“I tried.””

Her voice broke.

“I tried so many times.””

Noah looked down.

“Did I do something wrong?””

Emily immediately shook her head.

“No.””

She reached forward but stopped herself.

“Never.””

I watched her.

Whatever mistakes she had made, whatever pain existed between her and Mark, one thing was clear.

She loved that child.

The way she looked at him.

The way she was afraid to touch him.

That wasn’t an actress.

That was a mother who had lost years.

Mark turned away.

And I noticed.

He couldn’t watch.

Not because he was hurt.

Because he was guilty.

I stood.

“Mark.””

He looked at me.

“You are going to tell me everything.””

His expression hardened.

“I don’t know what she told you, but—”

“Stop.””

He stopped.

“I don’t want excuses.””

I held up the guardianship papers.

“I want the truth.””

“There’s nothing to explain.””

I looked at him.

“You forged my signature.””

His face changed.

“I didn’t.””

“Then who did?””

Silence.

“Who?””

Mark looked down.

And whispered:

“Claudia handled the paperwork.””

I turned toward her.

She stared at him.

For the first time, I saw something different between them.

Not partnership.

Not love.

Fear.

Mark had just thrown her under the bus.

Claudia’s face became cold.

“Seriously?””

Mark looked away.

“You said you had everything handled.””

My eyes moved between them.

Interesting.

When consequences arrived, loyalty disappeared quickly.

I stepped closer to Claudia.

“Did you forge my signature?””

She laughed once.

A nervous, angry sound.

“No.””

“Then why did Mark say you handled it?””

“Because he’s scared.””

“And you’re not?””

Her silence answered.

I looked at Daniel.

“Call the police.””

Mark’s head snapped up.

“Dad.””

“No.””

“Please.””

The word surprised me.

Not because he said it.

Because of how small he sounded.

For the first time all night, he wasn’t acting powerful.

He sounded like my son.

The boy I remembered.

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because if this goes public…”

I waited.

“There will be questions.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You’re worried about your reputation?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I pointed toward Noah.

“You should have worried about him.””

Mark looked at his son.

And for a moment, something changed.

Regret.

Real regret.

But regret doesn’t erase damage.

It doesn’t return lost years.

It doesn’t remove fear from a child’s heart.

Emily stepped forward.

“Richard.””

I looked at her.

“There’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then reached into her bag again.

Another envelope.

“I didn’t come here only because of Noah.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

She looked at Mark.

“Because I found out what happened the night I disappeared.””

The room went still.

Mark immediately reacted.

“Emily.””

She ignored him.

“You told Richard I left.””

She looked at me.

“But I didn’t.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

She took a deep breath.

“I found out Claudia had been moving money from Noah’s account.””

Mark shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Emily continued.

“I confronted her.””

“And?””

“She threatened me.””

Claudia’s expression changed.

“I never threatened you.””

Emily looked at her.

“You said if I went to Richard, Noah would disappear from my life forever.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Claudia.

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Did you?””

Her silence was enough.

Emily continued.

“The next day, I was in a car accident.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Accident?””

She nodded.

“I survived.””

Mark looked at her.

“You never told me.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“You came to the hospital.””

Mark froze.

Everyone looked at him.

“You came?””

Emily’s eyes filled.

“You stood outside my room.””

The color drained from his face.

“And you told the nurse I was unstable.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Emily looked at Mark.

“Because he wanted me declared incapable of caring for Noah.””

Mark whispered:

“No.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“He wanted custody transferred before anyone knew the truth.””

The room felt suffocating.

I turned to my son.

“Is that true?””

Mark didn’t answer.

And again…

Silence was the answer.

I closed my eyes.

My own son.

The child I raised.

The man I trusted.

I thought I had lost him years ago.

I just didn’t know it yet.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered quickly.

A few seconds later, his face changed.

“Mr. Bellacorte.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He hesitated.

“We found Thomas Vane.””

“Where?””

“He’s been in hiding.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Mark.

Then at Claudia.

“Because he says they forced him to sign the guardianship papers.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“Who forced him?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“He says he has proof.””

“What proof?””

Daniel looked at the documents.

Then said:

“He recorded the entire meeting where Mark and Claudia planned to take Noah away.””

No one moved.

No one breathed.

And then Daniel added:

“The recording starts with Mark saying one sentence.””

My heart tightened.

“What sentence?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He said…”

A pause.

May you like

Then:

*‘My father will never know what we did to Noah.’*
