Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
My hand remained frozen around the phone.
The entire world had narrowed down to one impossible sentence.
*Noah is not the only child Mark has been hiding from you.*
I looked across the room.
At my son.
At the man I had raised.
At the man who had just looked me in the eye and told me the mother of my grandson was dead.
A lie.
Another lie.
How many more were there?
“Richard?””
Emily’s voice came through the phone again.
I forced myself to answer.
“I’m here.””
“I know this is difficult.””
“No.””
My eyes stayed on Mark.
“You don’t understand.””
“I do.””
Her voice cracked slightly.
“I know exactly what it feels like to watch someone you love disappear behind another person’s lies.””
I stood slowly.
“Where are you?””
“Near the main road below the lodge.””
“Stay there.””
“Richard—”
“Stay there.””
I ended the call.
The room remained silent.
Mark stared at me.
“Who was that?””
I looked at him.
For the first time in my life, my son looked like a stranger.
“Your past.””
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“What does that mean?””
I held up the phone.
“Emily Carter is alive.””
The color drained from his face.
Claudia immediately stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
I turned toward her.
“You seem very certain.””
She stopped.
Mark looked angry now.
“Dad, whoever called you is lying.””
“Then why do you look terrified?””
“I don’t.””
“You do.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
I almost admired the confidence.
Almost.
A person who had been caught stealing money from a child.
A person who had hidden his son’s mother.
A person who had allowed his child to believe he wasn’t worthy of love.
And still, he stood there trying to control the conversation.
But he forgot something.
This was my house.
My family.
My grandson.
And I was done being controlled.
“Daniel.””
My security manager stepped forward.
“Yes, sir.””
“Bring Emily inside.””
Mark immediately moved.
“No.””
The word came out sharp.
Everyone looked at him.
He realized his mistake.
He softened his voice.
“Dad, wait.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
“Why should I wait?””
“She could be dangerous.””
I looked at him.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“You said the mother of your child abandoned him.””
Mark said nothing.
“You said she wasn’t stable.””
Silence.
“You said she was dead.””
His expression tightened.
“And now she appears, and suddenly she’s dangerous?””
Claudia stepped in.
“Richard, you’re being manipulated.””
I looked at her.
“By a woman who was supposedly dead?””
No response.
I turned away.
“Bring her in.””
Twenty minutes later, the front doors opened.
Cold mountain air swept through the lodge.
And then I saw her.
Emily Carter.
She looked nothing like I expected.
I don’t know what I imagined.
Someone dramatic.
Someone angry.
Someone who would walk in demanding answers.
Instead, I saw a woman who looked exhausted.
She wore a simple coat.
Her hands trembled slightly.
Her eyes immediately searched the room.
And then they found Noah.
He was still asleep on the couch.
The moment she saw him, her face broke.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
Just a mother seeing her child after too much time.
She covered her mouth.
A small sound escaped her.
“Noah.””
I watched Mark carefully.
He didn’t look relieved.
He didn’t look surprised.
He looked caught.
Emily walked forward slowly.
She stopped beside the couch.
She didn’t touch him.
Almost like she was afraid she didn’t have the right.
“Is he okay?””
I nodded.
“He’s safe.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Thank you.””
I studied her.
“You have a lot to explain.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Mark suddenly stepped forward.
“Emily.””
Her entire body changed.
The fear appeared instantly.
Not fear of seeing him.
Fear of what he could do.
I noticed.
So did Daniel.
“Don’t,” she whispered.
Mark stopped.
“I didn’t know you were alive.””
She stared at him.
“You knew.””
“I didn’t.””
“You did.””
Her voice shook.
“You always knew where to find me.””
The room went quiet.
Mark looked at me.
“She’s lying.””
Emily laughed softly.
A broken laugh.
“The same thing you said when you told Richard I abandoned Noah?””
Mark’s face hardened.
“Dad, don’t listen to her.””
I raised my hand.
“Everyone stops talking.””
Silence.
I looked at Emily.
“Tell me everything.””
She nodded.
Then she looked at Noah.
“I never wanted to leave him.””
The sentence was simple.
But I heard the pain behind it.
“Then why did you?””
“I didn’t.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She looked at Mark.
“He took him.””
Mark’s expression changed.
“That’s a lie.””
Emily ignored him.
“When Noah was born, Mark was different.””
She swallowed.
“He was loving. He was scared. He held Noah every night because he was afraid something would happen to him.””
I glanced at Mark.
For a second, I remembered the father he used to be.
Then Emily continued.
“Then Claudia came into his life.””
The room became colder.
“She convinced him that Noah was a weakness.””
Mark shook his head.
“No.””
“She told him your family name mattered more than a child.””
“That’s not true.””
“She told him Richard would never accept a son who made mistakes.””
I looked at Mark.
My heart sank.
Because that sounded like the kind of fear I might have accidentally created.
I had spent years building an empire.
Maybe I had made my son believe love had conditions.
But nothing justified this.
Emily continued.
“Claudia wanted control.””
“Control of what?”” I asked.
“The Bellacorte inheritance.””
Silence.
“She knew Noah was your only grandchild.””
I looked at Noah.
My only grandchild.
Emily nodded.
“She knew if Noah remained close to you, he would inherit a future she couldn’t control.””
Claudia laughed.
“That’s absurd.””
Emily looked at her.
“Is it?””
She reached into her bag.
Then pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept copies.””
Mark’s expression changed.
“What did you keep?””
Emily looked at me.
“Proof.””
She handed me the envelope.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Documents.
I scanned the first page.
Then the second.
And my hands tightened.
Because I recognized one sentence.
Written by Claudia.
*“Richard cannot become emotionally attached to Noah. Once he sees the child, everything changes.””*
I looked up.
Claudia was silent.
The next message was worse.
*“The airplane cannot reach him. If Richard sees that gift, he will ask questions.””*
My eyes moved to the little wooden airplane resting beside Noah.
The gift.
The thing they had tried so desperately to hide.
Because it wasn’t just a toy.
It was evidence.
A child’s simple gift had exposed everything.
I turned the page.
Then I saw a message from Mark.
My son.
My own son.
*“I understand. I’ll handle Emily.””*
My chest tightened.
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
Mark’s face collapsed.
“Dad…”
“You knew.””
“I can explain.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You have explained enough.””
Emily wiped her eyes.
“There’s more.””
I looked at her.
She hesitated.
“What?””
She looked toward Noah.
Then lowered her voice.
“Mark didn’t tell you why I disappeared.””
“Why?””
Her eyes met mine.
“Because I found out Claudia wasn’t just taking Noah’s money.””
A chill moved through me.
“What else was she doing?””
Emily looked at Mark.
“She was planning to take Noah away permanently.””
The fire cracked behind us.
Nobody spoke.
Then Emily whispered:
“She had papers prepared.””
My grip tightened around the documents.
“What papers?””
Emily’s face turned pale.
“Guardianship papers.””
I stared at her.
“For what reason?””
She took a shaky breath.
Then said:
“She planned to make it look like Noah was an unsafe child to leave with his own family.””
I looked at Mark.
The betrayal was almost impossible to comprehend.
But before I could speak, Daniel’s phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
Then his expression changed.
“Mr. Bellacorte.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
“We found the original guardianship documents.””
“Where?””
His eyes moved toward Claudia.
“In her car.””
Claudia stepped backward.
For the first time that night…
She looked afraid.
Daniel continued:
“And there’s one more thing.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The documents were signed three years ago.””
I frowned.
Three years ago.
When Noah was born.
Then Daniel said:
“Mr. Bellacorte… they weren’t signed by Mark.””
The room went completely silent.
“Whose signature is on them?””
Daniel looked at the paper in his hand.
May you like
And answered:
“Yours.””
