Chapter 9: The Truth Comes Out

The battle ended before sunrise.

Hale was captured.

General Cross resigned.

The impersonation program was exposed.

But the hardest moment came afterward.

I sat with Ethan outside the medical building.

“You should hate me,” he said.

I looked at him.

“I should.””

He lowered his eyes.

“But I don’t.””

He explained everything.

He had been forced into the program.

When he tried to escape, they threatened our family.

He helped expose Hale because he wanted the truth known.

Captain Ward later cleared my name publicly.

The same parade ground where I had been humiliated became the place where my reputation was restored.

Hundreds of soldiers watched.

This time, nobody looked away.

Ward stepped forward.

“Sergeant Cole was accused falsely. He protected this unit when others betrayed it.””

I looked across the formation.

Then I saw something unexpected.

Lieutenant Vane was standing there in custody.

He looked smaller.

Broken.

He approached me afterward.

“I was wrong.””

I said nothing.

He looked at my scar.

“I thought power meant nobody could challenge me.””

“And now?””

He looked down.

May you like

“Now I know fear isn’t respect.””

For the first time, he understood.
