Chapter 4: The Backup File
Daniel connected the device to the computer.
The screen loaded.
A hidden camera recording appeared.
The room watched silently.
The footage showed the security office.
The night before the fake video appeared.
Lieutenant Vane entered.
Alone.
Then another person walked in.
I leaned closer.
The second person’s face appeared.
My blood turned cold.
It was Major Victor Hale.
The man who supervised the entire weapons division.
Vane and Hale were working together.
Hale spoke first.
“The sergeant is too loyal.””
Vane replied.
“That’s why he’s perfect.””
Everyone stared.
The recording continued.
“We create evidence,” Hale said.
“Make him look guilty. Remove him from the chain of command.””
My fists tightened.
They had planned everything.
But why me?
The answer came seconds later.
Hale leaned toward Vane.
“Once Cole is gone, nobody questions the missing shipments.””
Captain Ward looked shocked.
“Missing shipments?””
I turned to her.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head slowly.
The weapons depot was not just about one key.
Someone had been stealing equipment.
And I had accidentally discovered it.
The recording ended.
Vane immediately tried to leave.
Captain Ward blocked the door.
“Lieutenant.””
He stopped.
“You’re under investigation.””
For the first time, his confidence cracked.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“No,” Ward replied.
“I’m correcting one.””
As soldiers escorted him away, Hale disappeared into the crowd.
I noticed.
And he noticed me noticing.
That night, I received another message.
Not a threat.
May you like
A warning.
*You found the lieutenant. Good. Now find the person above him.*
