Chapter 7: The Soldier Who Returned

The dead man’s name was Ethan Cole.

My older brother.

The same face.

The same voice.

The same scar above the eyebrow.

I felt the room disappear around me.

“That’s not possible,” I whispered.

Captain Ward looked at me.

“Your brother?””

I nodded.

“He died overseas.””

But the footage showed him alive.

General Cross suddenly looked nervous.

And that told me everything.

“You knew,” I said.

He didn’t answer.

“You knew.””

Cross stood.

“Your brother was part of a classified operation.””

“What operation?””

“A program designed to create perfect impersonation.””

My blood ran cold.

They had trained soldiers to mimic others.

Faces.

Voices.

Movements.

My brother had been used as a weapon.

And now someone was using him to destroy me.

Cross admitted he covered it up.

Because exposing the program would end his career.

“You sacrificed me to protect yourself,” I said.

He looked away.

“Yes.””

The confession was enough.

But before we could arrest him, alarms exploded.

The base was under attack.

Hale had returned.

And he wasn’t alone.
