The Letter She Tore Apart / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Truth

I thought I had reached the end of the nightmare.

I was wrong.

Professor Richard Hale had been one of the people I trusted most.

He was the reason I pursued systems engineering.

The person who encouraged me when I doubted myself.

The person who wrote my recommendation letter for Meridian.

When Daniel told me he needed to speak with him, I refused to believe it.

"There has to be another explanation.""

Daniel looked at me carefully.

"I hoped there was.""

We met Professor Hale in his office.

The same office where I had spent hours discussing research ideas.

The walls were covered with awards.

Books.

Photographs of successful students.

Including me.

He looked older.

Tired.

"Claire.""

I didn't sit.

"Why?""

He looked down.

"I made a mistake.""

I laughed.

"Everyone keeps calling it that.""

His face tightened.

"I never intended for it to go this far.""

"What did you do?""

He sighed.

"When Vanessa approached me, she was desperate.""

"She approached you?""

"Yes.""

My hands tightened.

"Why?""

"She wanted help understanding your research.""

"And you gave it to her?""

"I thought I was helping a student.""

I stared.

"You knew it was mine.""

He didn't answer.

That was the answer.

Daniel placed a folder on the desk.

"We found messages between Professor Hale and Vanessa.""

Professor Hale closed his eyes.

"You don't understand.""

"No," I said.

"I understand perfectly.""

He stood.

"I believed your work was too advanced for one student.""

"So you thought someone else deserved it?""

"No.""

"Then why?""

He looked at me.

"Because I thought Vanessa was talented too.""

I almost laughed.

"She wasn't asking for help.""

I pointed at the folder.

"She was asking for my life.""

He said nothing.

The university investigation ended quickly after that.

Professor Hale resigned.

Vanessa withdrew her lawsuit.

My family stopped speaking for a while.

And honestly?

I needed that.

I needed space.

Months passed.

I started my job at Meridian.

The first few weeks were overwhelming.

New responsibilities.

New people.

New expectations.

But something strange happened.

I wasn't afraid.

For years, I had worried that success would make people leave.

Now I understood.

The right people would stay.

One evening, Daniel asked me to stay after a meeting.

"I have something for you.""

He handed me a small box.

Inside was a framed piece of paper.

The corner of my original graduation letter.

The piece Vanessa had torn.

I smiled.

"You kept this?""

He nodded.

"Actually, your father gave it to me.""

I looked surprised.

"My father?""

"He found it after the ceremony.""

I touched the paper.

Six months earlier, I would have seen it as proof of pain.

Now I saw something else.

Proof that I survived.

That night, Dad called.

"Can we talk?""

I hesitated.

Then:

"Okay.""

We met at a quiet coffee shop.

He looked different.

Older.

More tired.

"I'm sorry.""

Two words.

Simple.

But powerful.

I looked at him.

"For what?""

"For letting you become the responsible one.""

I looked down.

He continued.

"I thought because you were strong, you didn't need protection.""

I nodded.

"I did need it.""

"I know.""

He looked away.

"I should have seen that.""

We sat quietly.

Then he asked:

"Do you think you'll ever forgive your mother?""

I thought about it.

"I don't know.""

And for once, I didn't feel guilty saying that.

Because forgiveness wasn't something I owed.

It was something someone had to earn.

Before we left, Dad handed me an envelope.

"What is this?""

"Something Vanessa left for you.""

I opened it.

A letter.

Her handwriting.

My heart tightened.

The first line said:

"Claire, I finally understand why you were never the problem.""

I kept reading.

And by the time I reached the end, I realized something.

Vanessa wasn't asking for forgiveness.

She was revealing the one thing nobody knew.

The reason she became obsessed with destroying me.

May you like

And it wasn't jealousy.

It was something much darker.
