The Letter She Tore Apart / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7: The Person Who Opened the Door

I couldn't move.

The phone continued ringing.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

I stared at her.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, the call went to voicemail.

"Who was that?""

She said nothing.

"Vanessa.""

Her shoulders dropped.

"It was Mom.""

The words hit harder than I expected.

Even though I had suspected something.

Even though I had seen enough.

Hearing it out loud felt different.

"No.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Claire—"

"No.""

I stepped back.

"You're lying.""

"I wish I was.""

I left her room before she could say anything else.

Downstairs, my mother was standing in the kitchen.

Waiting.

She knew.

The moment she saw my face, she knew.

"Claire.""

I looked at her.

"How long?""

She closed her eyes.

"Please.""

"How long did you know?""

Silence.

Then:

"Since the beginning.""

My heart broke in a way I couldn't explain.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like something inside me finally gave up.

"You knew she accessed my work.""

"Yes.""

"You knew she contacted Meridian.""

"Yes.""

"You knew she destroyed my graduation letter.""

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes.""

I nodded slowly.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I whispered:

"Why?""

She sat down.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing her.""

I stared at her.

"You thought you would lose Vanessa if you told the truth.""

"She was falling apart.""

"So you let me fall instead.""

She looked down.

"I thought you were stronger.""

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because I had heard versions of it my entire life.

Claire can handle it.

Claire understands.

Claire doesn't need help.

I laughed quietly.

"You know what the worst part is?""

Mom looked up.

"I spent years thinking being strong was a gift.""

I wiped my eyes.

"Now I realize it was just an excuse people used to keep hurting me.""

Dad entered the room.

He had heard enough.

"Is this true?""

Mom looked at him.

"Please don't.""

"Is it true?""

She didn't answer.

He didn't need one.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

The kind that comes when someone you love becomes someone you don't recognize.

"How could you do this?""

Mom started crying.

"I was trying to keep the family together.""

Dad shook his head.

"You protected the person breaking it.""

That evening, I stayed at a hotel.

Not because I wanted to punish anyone.

Because I needed silence.

For the first time in years, I wasn't trying to make anyone else comfortable.

I sat by the window watching cars move below.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

"Claire, legal has completed the review. We found evidence of deliberate intellectual property theft.""

I stared at the words.

Then another message arrived.

"There's something else. The university has identified the original source of the leak.""

I typed:

"Who?""

The reply came seconds later.

"Your mother's email account.""

I froze.

I called Daniel immediately.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

"Why would she do that?""

"We don't know.""

I closed my eyes.

Because I thought I knew my mother.

I thought she was the person who reminded me to eat during exams.

The person who sat beside me when I cried after rejection letters.

The person who told me she was proud.

Now I wondered which parts were real.

The next morning, I returned to my parents' house.

Mom was waiting.

"I know what you found.""

I held up my phone.

"Then explain.""

She looked exhausted.

"I never wanted you to get hurt.""

"That doesn't matter anymore.""

She cried.

"I made one mistake.""

"One?""

She looked away.

"I sent information because Vanessa convinced me Meridian would consider her.""

I stared.

"She convinced you she deserved my position.""

"No.""

"Then what?""

Mom whispered:

"She told me you already had enough.""

I felt something inside me break.

Because that was the sentence everyone had silently believed.

Claire has enough.

Claire can give more.

Claire can sacrifice.

I picked up my bag.

"Where are you going?""

I looked at her.

"Somewhere I don't have to apologize for existing.""

As I reached the door, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

"Claire, we need you here immediately.""

"Why?""

His voice was serious.

"Because someone just filed a lawsuit against Meridian Dynamics.""

My heart stopped.

"Who?""

A pause.

May you like

Then:

"Vanessa Morgan.""
