Chapter 7: The Mother Who Was Never Gone

I couldn’t breathe.

That was the only thing I knew.

Not the woman standing in my son’s bedroom.

Not the impossible words leaving Noah’s mouth.

Not the fact that the person I buried twenty years ago was looking at me like she had simply been away for a weekend.

I couldn’t breathe.

The woman slowly stood.

She looked exactly like the photographs.

Older, yes.

There were lines around her eyes.

Her hair was darker than I remembered.

But the eyes were the same.

The eyes I had spent half my life trying to remember.

“Rocco.””

Hearing my name from her mouth destroyed the last piece of doubt.

Because nobody else said it that way.

Not like I was still the little boy who ran to her when storms shook the windows.

Not like I was still the child who believed mothers were supposed to be permanent.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

The woman’s face fell.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“This isn’t real.””

Noah looked between us.

Confused.

“Daddy?””

I looked at him.

Then back at her.

“What are you doing here?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I came because I knew the truth was finally reaching you.””

I almost laughed.

The same sentence everyone used.

Truth.

As if truth was something they owned.

Something they could release when they decided I was ready.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me grow up believing you were dead.””

Her expression broke.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“Why?””

She looked toward Noah.

Then back at me.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””

My jaw tightened.

“I’m so tired of hearing that.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know what it feels like to stand beside a grave that should belong to your own mother.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I know exactly what it feels like.””

That stopped me.

Because there was something in her voice.

Not guilt.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I lost you too.””

The room became silent.

Noah slowly moved closer to me.

He didn’t understand the history.

He only understood emotions.

He understood that his father was hurt.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

I crouched beside him.

“Buddy, can you go with Maria for a minute?””

He looked at the woman.

“Is she bad?””

The question cut through the room.

My mother looked away.

“Noah…”

I didn’t know what to say.

Because for the first time in my life, I didn’t have an answer.

Maria appeared behind me.

She had followed quietly.

Smart.

Careful.

Always watching.

She reached for Noah’s hand.

“Come on.””

Noah looked at me.

“Daddy?””

“I’ll be right here.””

He nodded.

Before leaving, he looked back at my mother.

Then whispered:

“You sound like him.””

My mother froze.

“Like who?””

Noah looked confused.

“Uncle Ethan.””

The color drained from her face.

I noticed.

“What does that mean?””

Noah shrugged.

“He talks like you.””

My mother looked at me.

A strange sadness crossed her face.

“Ethan found you.””

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“He called me.””

Her expression changed.

“He shouldn’t have.””

“Why?””

“Because it means he’s running out of time.””

The words immediately changed the atmosphere.

“Where is he?””

She looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

She looked back at me.

“Especially after everything.””

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to scream.

But there were too many questions.

Too many impossible answers.

“Start from the beginning.””

She sat down slowly.

Like she had been waiting twenty years for this moment.

“Your father was not the man you thought he was.””

I laughed quietly.

“That seems to be the theme of my life.””

She ignored the comment.

“He built Vale Holdings with one goal.””

“What?””

“Control.””

I frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“That’s what he wanted everyone to believe.””

I walked to the desk.

“Everyone says my father was brilliant.””

“He was.””

“Everyone says he was respected.””

“He was.””

“Everyone says he loved his family.””

She looked down.

“He did.””

The answer surprised me.

“You still defend him?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I understand him.””

“That’s worse.””

“I know.””

She took a breath.

“Your father discovered something about the company’s foundation.””

“What?””

“Vale Holdings wasn’t built only from his work.””

I waited.

“It was built from another family.””

My expression changed.

“Whose?””

She looked at me.

“Ours.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Your father took control of a company that belonged to your grandfather’s partner.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

She reached into her coat.

Pulled out an old envelope.

And placed it on the table.

“I kept this for twenty years.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

“That your father knew Ethan was the rightful heir.””

My heart tightened.

Again.

The same phrase.

Rightful heir.

“I don’t understand.””

She nodded.

“Because nobody wanted you to.””

She opened the envelope.

Inside was an old photograph.

The same family photo from the security footage.

But this one was clearer.

Me.

Ethan.

My mother.

My father.

And another man.

A man I didn’t recognize.

Behind the photo was writing.

My father’s handwriting.

*“The first son inherits the truth. The second son inherits the company.””*

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

My mother looked at me.

“It means your father made a choice.””

“What choice?””

“He gave Ethan the truth.””

“And me?””

She hesitated.

“You.””

A pause.

“He gave you the burden.””

I felt anger rising.

“What burden?””

She looked toward the door where Noah had left.

“The responsibility of keeping everyone safe.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I pushed the photo away.

“No, that’s not an explanation.””

“It is.””

“It’s another secret.””

“Yes.””

The admission was painful.

“But this time, I’m telling you.””

I stared at her.

“Why now?””

Her eyes moved to the hallway.

“Because Claire is alive.””

I froze.

“You know Claire?””

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

My mother looked terrified for the first time.

“She was your father’s assistant.””

“That’s all?””

“No.””

The silence stretched.

“She was also Ethan’s mother.””

I stopped.

“What?””

My mother looked at me.

“Before me.””

The room went quiet.

“You mean…”

“Yes.””

I felt dizzy.

Another family.

Another hidden child.

Another person connected to my father.

“Ethan had a mother.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because your father told me.””

I stared at her.

“How could you stay with him?””

Pain crossed her face.

“Because by then, I already knew what he was capable of.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward the window.

“Your father didn’t fake Ethan’s death.””

My blood froze.

“What?””

She whispered:

“Ethan did.””

“Why?””

“Because someone was coming for him.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

And I knew the answer scared her.

“Someone inside Vale Holdings.””

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message.

From Ethan.

The timing was impossible.

*“Do not trust the woman in your room.””*

My eyes moved up.

My mother was watching me.

Another message arrived.

*“She wasn’t the one who saved me.””*

Then another.

*“She was the reason I ran.””*

I looked at my mother.

She saw my expression.

“What did he say?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

A dead brother.

A living mother.

A fiancée who lied.

A friend who betrayed me.

Everyone had a story.

Everyone had a reason.

Then my mother whispered:

“Rocco.””

I looked up.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

“Whatever Ethan told you…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“He’s not wrong.””

The sentence confused me.

“What?””

She took one step closer.

“He’s just not telling you everything.””

The lights suddenly went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

A second later, the security alarm screamed.

Maria’s voice came through the emergency system.

“Boss.””

Her voice was urgent.

“We have a problem.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who entered the property…”

I heard movement downstairs.

Maria’s breathing changed.

“Boss…”

“Who is it?””

The answer came quietly.

And it made my blood run cold.

“They’re carrying Ethan’s ring.””

The same ring.

The one that belonged to my dead brother.

The one that was never supposed to exist.

Then the front door opened.

And a man’s voice echoed through my house.

“Rocco.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

And I knew it better than anyone.

“Don’t believe her.””

May you like

A pause.

“Your mother is the reason I disappeared.””
