Chapter 13: The Memory I Was Never Allowed To Keep

The first thing I heard after the gunfire stopped was my own breathing.

Fast.

Uneven.

Alive.

The second thing I heard was Maria shouting.

“Everyone down!””

Her voice cut through the chaos.

The old house had become a battlefield.

Glass covered the floor.

Rain poured through the broken windows.

The shadows outside moved between the trees.

Someone was out there.

Someone had followed us.

But my attention wasn’t on the attackers.

It was on the piece of paper lying in front of me.

My name.

Written in black ink.

*Rocco Vale: The First Witness.*

I picked it up.

My hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From confusion.

Because one sentence had changed the entire story.

You were there.

My father’s words.

You saw what happened.

You just don’t remember.

Maria grabbed my shoulder.

“Boss.””

I looked at her.

“We need to move.””

I didn’t answer.

“Boss.””

Her voice became sharper.

“We need to move now.””

I looked toward the doorway.

My father was gone.

Again.

The man who had disappeared from my life twice.

The man who had returned only to vanish seconds later.

“Where did he go?””

Nobody answered.

Ethan stood near the window, looking outside.

His face was pale.

“He took the escape route.””

I turned.

“You knew about it?””

“Yes.””

The anger came immediately.

“Of course you did.””

He looked at me.

“Rocco—”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew this house had escape routes.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Adrian.””

“Yes.””

My voice rose.

“And somehow, I’m still the last person to know.””

Ethan looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

That made it worse.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

A bitter sound.

“Stop saying that.””

The room went quiet.

“I don’t want protection.””

I looked at everyone.

“I want the truth.””

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus spoke.

“You’re finally asking the right question.””

I turned toward him.

“What question?””

He looked at the paper in my hand.

“Not who betrayed you.””

A pause.

“Why were you chosen?””

The words stayed with me.

Chosen.

Not targeted.

Not attacked.

Chosen.

Maria looked at the documents on the table.

“Boss.””

She picked up one of the files.

“There is something here.””

“What?””

She opened a page.

A medical record.

My name at the top.

My stomach tightened.

“Why do you have my medical records?””

Nobody answered.

I grabbed the page.

The date was twenty years ago.

The year my mother supposedly died.

The year Ethan disappeared.

I read the first line.

*Patient: Rocco Vale.*

Then:

*Memory disruption protocol approved.*

I froze.

“What is this?””

My mother looked away.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was there.””

“Where?””

“The hospital.””

“What happened?””

She took a breath.

“The night your father died.””

I stared.

“My father didn’t die that night.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“But something happened.””

I held up the paper.

“What is memory disruption protocol?””

Silence.

Then Ethan answered.

“A procedure.””

I looked at him.

“What procedure?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“One designed to remove traumatic memories.””

My body went cold.

“No.””

My mother stepped closer.

“Rocco.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re telling me someone erased my memories?””

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than any betrayal.

Because this wasn’t a lie.

This was my own mind.

My own past.

Something stolen from me.

“Who?””

My mother looked at my father’s old letter.

Then at Ethan.

Then finally at me.

“You asked for the truth.””

I nodded.

“Tell me.””

Her voice broke.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

“My father erased my memories?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because you saw something.””

The old house seemed to disappear.

“What?””

She whispered:

“You saw who attacked Ethan.””

My heart started racing.

“I was twelve.””

“I know.””

“You think I remember a murder?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You remember pieces.””

A flash moved through my mind.

A dark hallway.

A loud sound.

Someone shouting.

A hand pulling me away.

I grabbed my head.

Pain.

Sudden.

Sharp.

Maria stepped forward.

“Boss?””

I held up my hand.

“I’m fine.””

I wasn’t.

I saw something.

A memory trying to return.

A voice.

A man.

“Rocco, don’t look.””

I closed my eyes.

Another image.

Ethan.

Bleeding.

Alive.

Looking at me.

Not like a brother.

Like someone saying goodbye.

I opened my eyes.

“He wasn’t dead.””

Everyone stared.

“What?””

I looked at Ethan.

“The night you disappeared.””

His face changed.

“What did you remember?””

I swallowed.

“You were alive.””

Silence.

“You were hurt.””

Ethan slowly stepped closer.

“What else?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

But then another memory came.

A car.

A fire.

My father.

And someone standing beside him.

Someone holding a document.

Someone I knew.

I whispered:

“Marcus.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus froze.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You were there.””

His face changed.

Not denial.

Pain.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Because I was too late.””

“What does that mean?””

He took a breath.

“The night your father staged his death, Adrian found out.””

I frowned.

“Found out what?””

“That your father had transferred control.””

“To who?””

Marcus looked at me.

“To you.””

My heart stopped.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Your father knew Adrian would never go after a child.””

I stared.

“So he made me the owner?””

“Yes.””

“Why hide it?””

“Because Adrian would have killed you.””

The answer was simple.

Terrifying.

I looked at the documents.

The company.

The secrets.

Everything.

My entire life had been built around protecting me from something I never knew existed.

Then Marcus spoke.

“There is something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small key.

“I took this from your father twelve years ago.””

I stared.

“You stole from him?””

“No.””

He looked at the key.

“I saved it.””

“What does it open?””

His expression changed.

“The one thing Adrian never found.””

My mother stepped back.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You know?””

She nodded slowly.

“I know what’s inside.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The original recording.””

“Of what?””

Her voice dropped.

“The night everything changed.””

I looked at the key.

“Where?””

Marcus answered.

“Under Vale Holdings.””

I frowned.

“There’s nothing under the company.””

“There is.””

He looked at me.

“A room your father built before the company became what it is.””

Maria checked the documents.

“Boss.””

She looked up.

“There’s a hidden property listed.””

“Where?””

“Under the original Vale foundation.””

A location appeared.

My heart sank.

Because I recognized it.

It was beneath my office.

The building where I had worked every day.

The place I thought I knew better than anyone.

The place where Marcus had access.

The place where Victoria had visited.

The place where my entire life had been built.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

Adrian.

“Congratulations, Rocco.””

I said nothing.

“You finally remembered.””

My blood went cold.

“How do you know?””

A laugh.

“Because I was there when they took the memory from you.””

The room froze.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then Adrian said:

“Because I was the person your father was trying to protect you from.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Then why are you telling me?””

His voice became quieter.

“Because your father lied about one thing.””

“What?””

“The memory they removed from you wasn’t the only one.””

Silence.

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

Adrian whispered:

“Rocco…”

May you like

A pause.

“You don’t remember what you did that night.””
